The role of Bishops

Can someone kindly explain to me a Bishops duties in regard to guiding and assisting priests. Do Bishops discipline priests?

Actually, the Bishop is the head of the church in a particular geographic area called a Diocese. The priests are his assistants, assigned by him to a smaller geographic area called a Parish.

Bishops have many roles to the priest: Boss, Spiritual Father, Advisor, maybe even Friend. Ultimately a Bishop is responsible for disciplining priests, but because of his duties, he generally delegates the everyday personnel stuff to a Vicar for the Clergy. It’s similar to the military model where the Commanding Officer has ultimate responsibility but the Executive Officer takes care of that stuff.

If you have a New Testament, read the letters of Paul to Timothy and Titus. What we have today derives directly from Paul’s role.

From the catechism, he following sections explain the role of Bishop:

873, 879, 888, 893-895, 1142, 1536, 1555, 1560, 1561

There are also priests who are not under a bishop. These priests usually belong to religious orders and congregations. Instead of a bishop, they have the religious superior (ex. abbot, major superior, superior general, provincial, rector, etc.).
 
Bishops teach, rule and sanctify the Christian people. Additionally, priests make promises of respect and obedience to their bishops.
