Please forgive my typing as I just had hand surgery. I don’t know what the role of women in Islam is. I am asking for those “in the know” to tell me what they believe. I only know what I have heard - that women are only to be used as sexual “slaves” for men in heaven. That is their only role. I don’t think this can be correct. Or is it??

Thanks to anyone who answers. My mind is very open.

Caramel

P,S. I am new here. This is the first thread that I have started. I hope I am doing it correctly.

I highly recommend you read all (or at least the topics that interest you) out of the following series by James Alarndson on Islam and women
( see this series here answering-islam.org/Authors/Arlandson/index.htm )

For example, see

Greetings Caramel,

Please specify what you are asking about, because women are not their own topic in Islam. Asking what the role of women in Islam is, is like asking what the role of theology in Islam is. Please expand your question and elaborate with more thought.
I only know what I have heard - that women are only to be used as sexual “slaves” for men in heaven.
What you have heard is not correct. The so called “sexual slaves” for men in Paradise are not real, human women, but soul-less heavenly creations made to be men’s wives in Heaven.

Cheers.

There is no single answer to the role of women in Islam. It is a function of the culture, and Islam is found in many different cultures. The roles of women and Saudi Arabia and Indonesia are very different.

Many westerners have the idea that all one billlion Muslims are the same. They are not. The cultures are very diverse, each with its own local customs and practices.

For example, Saudi women in Saudi Arabia are required to wear a head to toe abaya in public. When they leave the country on a plane, as soon as the wheels leave the ground they remove the abaya to reveal western fashion.

Saudi women cannot drive. Muslim women in Indonesia can drive, and dress like most modern women in the US or Europe. Indonesia is the largest Muslim nation.

So, in looking for an answer to your question, look to each country, because each has a different answer.

There are people who will find some Islamic ruling and then try to tell you it is followed in all Muslim nations. They don’t know what they are talking about and are simply inventing a fantasy from their flawed understanding of the world.

No offense Shenango, but that really sounds like a rationalization to defend the doctrine. If it is not a rationalization than this doctrine is basically saying God made a loophole to appeal to men’s baser instincts so in heaven they can behave in a manner that He declared a sin on earth. It seems a lot like the psychological game of “Yes, but…” Just my opinion…

Peace,

George

Women are considered inferior to men in Islam. If a woman does not resist rape, she is stoned as an adulterer, and if she does she is hanged! Read the story of Nazanin, the 17 year old who has been sentenced to be hanged for killing one of her attackers when she tried to defend herself and her younger niece.

It may be claimed that faithfreedom.org is biased (as I have seen in the past) but I have found numerous reports of this on many websites. I find this appaling especially in light of the numerours posts on this site claiming Muslim women have more rights than western women and that Islam is a peaceful and compassionate religion.

I am sure it will be noted that this is Iran, however based on what I have read on this forum Iran is closer to a true Islamic state than say Saudi Arabia.

I have often stated my hope that Islam is a peaceful and compassion religion. I am forced to ask if the Iranian government is acting contray to Islam than why are Muslims tolerating such abuses in the name of their peaceful and compassionate religion?

Good question. Perhaps we can expand it and ask why the faithful of any religion tolerate abuses by their government that are contrary to their religion. For example, why did Catholics tolerate Franco, Mussilini, and Hitler? Why did Christians tolerate Stalin?I think the reason is that they lacked the power and organization necessary to overthrow such oppression. I suspect it is the same with Muslims.

You are most likely right Ortho. Good questions and a good even-handed response. I am curious why Muslims in general do not speak out against such things. I am aware that I have limited access to various media reports so it is possible I do not hear the outrage abuses such as this generates. If you can direct me to any such resource I would appreciate it.

So they are high-tech sex toys.

Shenango,

JimG has prompted me to think a bit more of what you have said. Are you saying Islam teaches we keep our bodies in heaven (albeit in perfect health, etc. I would assume) and maintain earthly appetites and have some semblance of our earthly lives (i.e. wives)?

What about good Muslim women? What do they get? Perfect health, earthly appetites and multiple husbands?

To make matters a lot simpler, instead of confusing it with details: every person will get anything their heart desires, and every person will be happy and at peace.

We can discuss what goes on in heaven…but i’d rather just take that time and use it on trying to get there 🙂

Please provide proof from the Quran and the authentic sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to support your claims that what these ppl did is in line with Islam.

i’ll be waiting for your response.

I really never realized that this was Islamic teaching.

Impersonal sex with a soul-less creation is the opposite of the Catholic theology of sex as a union of persons within a marital covenant.

It seems unfair if women are not promised a supply of soul-less hunks in paradise to satisfy their own sexual desires. To each his or her own sex toys.

Beleifs quite aside, I am also a person who values learning and accuraqcy highly, and it is noteworthy that, while not as extreme, many Christian churches suppressed women’s rights for many years.

why do so many people think it is legitimate to compare Christians doing something **against what the Bible teaches ** to Muslims doing something in accordance with what the Quran teaches?

It is obviously wrong to compare like this.

i think they probably go to far. women should probably be able to drive a car or go in public without covering her face. but too much feminism has made things very hard in this country too. a child should have a mother at home to care for it. yes?
