Something I noticed today while a man was praying the Rosary loudly by himself in church was that, when he announced the Mystery at the beginning of each decade, he also recited the entire scriptural passage corresponding to that Mystery. For example, he didn’t merely say “The Annunciation,” but instead he would say “The Annunciation; …” and then recite the entire scriptural passage from memory.

I know we are supposed to announce the Mystery at the beginning of each new decade and then proceed to meditate on it while praying that decade, but by “announce” I always thought I just had to say “The Annunciation” or “The Visitation” or “The Nativity,” etc.

When praying the Rosary alone, you may simply announce the Mystery to yourself mentally, and in a group you say it out loud, but am I supposed to be saying more than just the title of the particular Mystery? (I always meditate on the Mystery as best I can, btw.)

The rosary is a private devotion. You may pray it however is helpful for you to do so. If just announcing the mystery is sufficient to call it to mind, great. If meditating upon the Scripture passage associated with it is helpful, go for it.

The world is your oyster, spiritually speaking.

Particularly at adoration, I am very careful to keep silence, as I may block the Lord’s message to others as well as myself. Some seem to think the Rosary does not “count” unless it is audible. Not at all! He knows our hearts and contemplation is best accomplished in silence.

If it is an organized Rosary or Chaplet, then we all speak in unison. Otherwise, silence is golden.
