Yup, in January I will be joining the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer (see my sig!). Well, for a month anyway, and then I will ask the Superior to accept me as an Aspirant where I will then go on to postulancy, novitiate and final vows. If it is God’s will then let it be - but this is my plan for the future 🙂 Of course, this means that come January I will no longer be a member of CAF.

Aha, many people in Africa have computers. We design our mud huts using them 🙂
Awesome. I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed you aren’t joining the Franciscans, but the Redemptorists are really cool. 😃

Ha. Well, I’m just used to thinking of Africa as a poor country with huts, so it threw me off when I read it.

Are you not allowed to go on the internet when in “postulancy”? Not even for a limited time?

Not usually. Usually Religious orders try to break you away from the world, especially during the Postulate and Novitiate. Mostly Brothers/Friars that have taken Temporary Vows are allowed to spend some time on the internet, but before then they are not allowed to have much (If any) contact with the outside world. It’s not unusual if you’re not allowed to contact family and friends very often during this time either. It’s a time of contemplation, of forming yourself to the order’s way of life, of prayer, and of discernment. Religious orders have always believed that the world will get in the way of this, especially the Franciscans and Monastic orders. Some are not very strict on this, though. I’m not sure if the Redemptorists are.

So think of it as taking a leave of absence from CAF. You will still be a member. Years later, you can come back and share your knowledge during the 15 minutes allotted to you each day.😛

It might be hard, yes. It might take a few attempts, yes. But it is not impossible. We have the God-given power to do it through sheer will alone and that is it. If it means we have to change a few things then so be it! Lucky we also have the power of prayer to help us.

Perhaps I am just a bit too old fashioned, but I see no other explanation for these things. If it isn’t medically treatable, and if it doesn’t come down to will power then how does one get out of bad habits? Even if I am wrong (I may be wrong indeed) I feel that I am at least correct for this sleeping habit thing 🙂
All I’m saying is that many think what is easy for them should be easy for everyone else. We shouldn’t do that.

What God gives one the strength to overcome in a short time, he often allows another to be challenged with his whole life, and may never permit that one to be free according to His holy will.

Maybe the guy’s sleeping habit can be corrected by willpower. Maybe it doesn’t need to be corrected and he is just fine the way he is. Somebody has to be in the perpetual adoration chapel at midnight, don’t they? But the one thing I never do is assume that I know what is going on in someone’s life. That’s all I’m saying.

And I want to say thank you. Thank you for becoming consecrated religious. Thank you for praying for all of us. I have been toying with the idea of becoming a lay cistercian for a while.

Sorry to derail the rosary thread. Please forgive me.

I thought of the Franciscans for a while but realised that while I admire their work my particular gifts would mean that if I did join them I wouldn’t be able to do as much good for the Lord as I could. I don’t mean this to sound like false humility, but I don’t think I am humble enough to do the work of a Franciscan. In any case - the FSsR are not Redemptorists in the strict sense and this is why they had to change their name from Transalpine Redemptorists. Their spiritual father is St.Alphonsus and of course many other Redemptorist saints, but the situation is complicated because for 20 or so years they were an Order affiliated with the SSPX. After reconciling with Rome they had to change their name.

Not allowed to go on pretty much ever 🙂 Not just during my formation years but also afterwards. The FSsR are missionary monks - “Carthusians at home, Apostles abroad”. In other words, it’s strict observance and a very austere kind of life. I am happy about that. While Forums and internet is useful, I recognize that they are a distraction in some sense. Having said that, I know Fr. Michael Mary (the Superior) updates their blog and communicates via email. But this is out of necessity - he doesn’t sit and just chill on the internet 🙂

Correct, and for the FSsR I believe they are even more strict. Think of them as 15th century monks who happen to have a Superior with future technology who occasionally updates a blog 🙂

Once I am in (if it is God’s will) then I won’t be coming back. The hours of monk do not have specified “Internet time”. At least not in the FSsR - which I am thankful for. It’s Jesus Christ 24/7 for the rest of my life 🙂

Ah, yes, I understand you now. Yes I agree - perhaps it comes off as trivializing someone’s struggles when the advice is just “pull your sucks up lad!”. Either way I pray that whatever he wants to do that he can succeed, and let it be the will of God Almighty!

Praying for you, a lay cistercian would be a great idea! And thanks for your well wishes. God has given me a gift that I don’t deserve and I only want too honour His will.

Aw, that’s sad. Who now is going to give accurate and charitable posts on these forums after you’re gone? I’m going to join the Franciscans or Priesthood, so I won’t have much time either, but I’m not going to leave a NewsTheMan sized gap on these forums, like you are. 😃

You’re too kind! I’m hardly charitable all the time and my the little knowledge I do have comes from these forums so I’m only passing on information I learned here. I doubt this place will miss me like it would miss Br. JR 🙂

Godspeed with your own vocation. I pray that wherever you are it is God’s will - you and I have been given great gifts in our vocations. Praise be to God 🙂

The International Rosary on EWTN doesn’t bother me all that much but I like the pictures, statues, and artwork shown during it. But I get easily distracted when they have other languages thrown in at times.

I prefer the Holy Land Rosary the best as it shows the sites. Maybe its the history buff in me that likes to see the old things as I am praying along. I will have to get the cd or dvd some day.

Mother Angelica’s Rosary is nice but it moves too slow for me. I like some mediation but at the same time I am used to speaking faster and moving along in recitation faster especially when I pray at home or other places.

I do like at some of the EF Masses, that the Rosary is said before Mass. I’ve been to one place where at 3pm on Sundays, the priest leads the Rosary in Polish (he is an older priest with some who still knows the language like a few in the congregation do) then does Benediction / Exposition after but that in English. Then around 3:30pm, the Rosary is done in English and normally lead by a layperson. The EF Mass starts at 4pm so the Rosary is always done with 5 to 10 minutes to spare. Another place where I go to the EF Mass, say the Rosary then the Divine Mercy chaplet. They ensure both are done prior to Mass start time at 8:45am. The recitations keeps the secular conversations to a minimum for sure as I’d rather hear people reciting prayers before Mass anyways.

Brother JR has indeed been a huge contributor here, but so have you. Who’s going to help teach him things after you’re gone? I suppose I’ll have to do it, but I have no idea how I’ll manage. 😃

The same with yours. I’ve contacted the Conventual Franciscans in Chicago, and perhaps in three years I’ll be an apostolate. In the meantime, I’m still discerning the Diocesan Priesthood, but being a Franciscan Priest is a very big possibility for me.

I’m glad that everything has worked out for you. I pray that you’re called to the Transalpine Redemptorists and, of course, for you. I ask that you pray that everything works out for me.

Does anyone know how to pray all the mysteries in just one rosary?

thanks

I enjoy the Rosary both ways: with others and alone. In fact, I said it in group before Mass this evening, and then alone in the Chapel afterward. For me, they are different in dynamics entirely. I admit, I like the thees and thous more than the more modern form, but then, I still say the Holy Ghost and debts and debtors!

I didn’t see on here where anyone prays the Mission Mysteries. I really like them, and don’t pray them on the weekly rotation but often do them if I just want a break during the day or am popping into the Chapel for a half hour.

Anyone else on here like them, also?

I hadn’t heard of the Mission Mysteries.

Do you have a link or can you reference a book?
