The gravity of child sex abuse is well understood by any reasonable person

Thirty years ago, when the majority of sex abuse was going on, it was the opinion of most people that reprimands and counseling would be enough to set abusive priests back on the straight and narrow. So they were probably dealt with that way, then sent elsewhere to give them a new start in life. It’s tragic that didn’t work out that well, but it was thought that would work.
