This is a sort of open ended discussion. I’m just looking for background info on ministries which might have a role in combatting the sex trade.

A few months ago I went to my wife’s Baptist Church to hear a young woman speaking about her and her husband’s ministry in Laos (I think - maybe Cambodia) where she’s involved in trying to get women out of the sex trade. Often they’re just young girls.

Apparently the sex trade is now the world’s biggest organised crime racket, or it will be soon. Unlike drugs which can be sold only once, people can be sold over and over again. The Russian Mafia are heavily involved, amongst others.

Does anybody here have experience or knowledge of Catholic organisations specifically devoted to trying to deal with this problem?

One of the things that is not helping is that a lot of ordinary, non-criminal males seem to think that a trip to Thailand, Laos or the Phillippines for “recreation” is morally acceptable.

One way we all can help battle sex trade is to stop watching porn and to refuse to accept soft porn in our shows on television. The increase of the Pornography industry is connected to the increase of the sex trade because many sexual offenders have started with porn.

So, my point, is to attack the root of the cause to kill the offense entirely.

In this we all can take steps…

Since you are talking like it is there in droves, how do you specifically define soft porn?

Recognizing it is a lot easier than defining it. Off the cuff, any form of entertainment that appears intended for the primary purpose of causing the sexual gratification of the viewer is at least ‘soft porn.’ A lawyer could tear that definition apart, but any sincere human being can tell what it is.

But everybody’s definition is different. My mother would say miniskirts and long romantic kisses are porn. Mine is a bit more middle of the road.

Hmmm… taking soft core porn out of America’s entertainment will hurt Eastern European/South East Asian slave traders?

Do you think men just wake up one day and decide “Hmm, I think I’ll travel to Thailand and have me one of them 13 year old hookers they got there.” ??

Drastic evil takes time to develop. It starts with ‘little’ evil.

One organization (‘Christian’ but not Catholic) that is doing wonderful work is the International Justice Mission

I also heard one wonderful Holy missionary Father speak one time. He is in the Phillipines and on the front line. His name is Fr. Jack Murphy and can be reached via the following web site.

First of all, there is no sex trade and there are no sex workers. The correct word is prostitution, or forced prostitution. There are no ‘porn stars,’ only prostitutes. And there are strippers, not ‘exotic dancers.’

It’s taken 40 years but a lot of high priced lawyers have been hired by the prostitution industry to go to court to legalize whatever they can get away with. God tells us: Be either hot or cold or I will vomit you out of my mouth.

We cannot be indifferent. We are talking about physical slavery and addiction here. God knows I’m not perfect, but doing nothing means nothing gets done.

Turn off your TV. Listen to Catholic Radio. Get the Catholic perspective.

Do not buy any books or magazines that offer sexual/perverse content.

Tell your gas station or supermarket to stop carrying these magazines or books.

Get rid of cable or satellite TV.

Hope this helps,
Ed

The 2 primary reasons I watch TV are for my Chicago Cubs games, and so weather doesn’t leave me hungout to dry. When there are watches and warning in my area, I have my local NBC or ABC affiliate on watching the radar. Anyone who turns the channel or turns it off on me is in big trouble.

Think of the negative consequences it’ll have on our tax dollars that the government collects from the sale of the merchandise. Our taxes will go up.

I was wondering the same thing. I’d be interested in hearing a perspective that supports that type of statement…

You really can’t see the connection?

Little Johnny grows up watching his father treat women like objects. He hears comments like “I’d like a piece of that” and “What a body”. Little Johnny sees Daddy’s Playboy’s magazines laying around. Little Johnny starts abusing himself over these rags.

Can you see where this leads Johnny?

While grown up Johnny is in Singapore on business he sees nothing wrong with sending out for a little 13 year old.

To claim soft porn has no connection to the sex slave trade is worse than the clowns in tobacco claiming smoking is safe.

I’m afraid that shotgun definition could kill a lot of fine art and literature. Any work that looks to mirror, examine, or explain the human experience with any honesty is going to, if the tale is at all complete is going to include sex and death.

Defecating is part of the human experience, even more so than sex.

How can we have such great literature about the ‘human experience’ with that part left out?🤷

Which ‘shotgun definition?’ Nobody here is arguing that ‘David’ needs to put some clothes one. Michealangelo wasn’t decorating a gay bar, he was creating genuine art. Actual art that includes nudity isn’t necessarily porn and I was careful to phrase my definition that way. Porn is about intent, not just content. That’s why its hard to regulate judicially. But no lawyerly rationalizing will hold up in the court of God’s judgement. Stop engaging in it.

In 1968, a lot of fine artists were shouting for freedom. Writers too. At the time, I thought, Hey, they should have the freedom to express themselves. Yeah, I, and a lot of people, were lied to. So-called art films tried to sneak in some nudity and sexual situations for the sake of “art.” A certain singer posed in Playboy, she said, “for art.” A lot of “art magazines” showed nudes for “art.”

Everyone knows Arnold Schwarzennegar is not a cyborg under his skin and doesn’t really die when he gets killed in a movie. But when some actress shows a part of her body that’s normally covered, it is a part of her body and not some prosthetic. That’s why people addicted to porn hunt down those images.

No, there are many ways to tell a story. Entertainment should not include gynecology or the use of f*** every five seconds. Movies are not documentaries. And the human condition can be studied in a serious way without having story after story of some attractive actress playing a prostitute.

Serious art was always about money as well as a message. Fine artists could get the full praise of critics but if their work didn’t sell, it was off to find the next creative genius. Hollywood is all about a number followed by as many zeros as possible.

Peace,
Ed

Because a good **** is usually not a motivating factor in the overall behavior of a person ot a culture.
