The ‘atheist’ Irish Tanaiste (deputy prime-minister) - although he believes there should be separation between the church and the state - has ‘called’ for Cardinal Brady to stand down.

*Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has today called on Cardinal Seán Brady to resign following renewed allegations concerning his role in an inquiry into allegations of clerical abuse by the paedophile priest Fr Brendan Smyth.

Speaking in the Dáil this morning, Mr Gilmore said he had always believed in the separation of Church and State.

“But is my own personal view that anybody who did not deal with the scale of the abuse we have seen in this case should not hold a position of authority,’’ he added.

The Tánaiste was replying to Fianna Fail TD Willie O’Dea, who said that every citizen had always had at least a moral obligation to report any abuse to the civil authorities.

Pressure is growing on the primate to resign following the broadcast of a BBC documentary shown on Tuesday night.

The BBC This World documentary - The Shame of the Catholic Church - disclosed how the church inquiry involving the then Fr John Brady was given the names and addresses of children who were abused by paedophile priest Brendan Smyth. This information was never passed on to the parents of the children or to the Garda.*

Yeah, saw that. He has pro-actively campaigned against the Catholic Church’s influence in Ireland since coming into power, and yet feels he now has the authority to dictate orders to the Church about our leaders. Right or wrong, if we abide by his rules of separation of Church and State, this is not his domain.

.

*The only thing I would say which the media is often slow to accept is that these stories of silenced abuse are characteristic of the whole of Irish society at the time, and not just within the Church. Abuse was not something that was talked about openly, very few were equipped to deal with it then. Now we know how to deal with abusers - criminal prosecutions - in those days, abuse of all kinds and at all levels was swept under the carpet. Not that this mitigates the Church’s responsibility in any way, but I know for a fact that there are other stories in Irish culture of abuse within families, trusted friends, etc. - and very few of those were reported either. Only in the last decade or so have we heard of fathers being brought to justice for years of child abuse for example.

God help us through this pain, help the victims, help the Church.*

Yes, and child abuse cases were practically unheard of throughout the world until the early '70’s, but it was still going on. With regards to turning to God for healing. On the Vincent Brown show - again talking about whether or not CO’Brien should resign - there was a priest on the panel (I’m afraid I did not catch his name) who was trying to put across why CO’Brien would not have thought to follow up his recommendations and checked on the victims, after submitting these to the bishop.

Anyhow, after about 30 minutes, the priest who was ordained about 5 years ago and was around 50 yrs of age, said 'well I too was abused from 7-14 by a catholic priest in Belfast, to which there was complete silence. He said he loved the catholic church with a passion and did not blame the church for the crimes against him. He said he had nightmares for years and could not come to terms with it but eventually decided to take the step to forgive his abuser (he did add he was not recommending this to other victims, it was his choice). I believe the abuser was in jail and he visited him, took his hands and said ‘I forgive you’ - and said that all the hatred, fear etc., left him and he saw before him a sad old man.

A very uplifting and brave story and imagine what a strong advocate this priest would be to help to separate the ‘filth’ that infiltrated the church, from the real beauty of the catholic church and it’s teachings.

And it continues. Resignation called for by the Deputy Prime Minister down to the ‘not too silenced’ priest…

irishcentral.com/news/-Fr-Brian-DArcy-joins-calls-for-Cardinal-Brady-to-resign-amid-new-abuse-claims-149987175.html

*Censored priest Brian D’Arcy has joined the calls on Cardinal Sean Brady to resign as leader of the Church in Ireland.

The well known Northern Ireland cleric said on Thursday morning that Cardinal Brady should ‘reflect; on his position.

New claims have emerged that Cardinal Brady failed to protect children from notorious paedophile Fr Brendan Smyth.

Fr D’Arcy, who revealed last week that his Sunday World column is now censored by the Vatican, has called on Cardinal Brady to quit.

Yeah same old, same old from Fr D’Arcy, he called on him to resign months ago.

But Fr D’Arcy said in the article…

“The problem is that if Cardinal Brady goes the ordinary people of Ireland won’t have a single vote in who replaces him.”

Did they ever Fr ? the church isn’t a democracy, we don’t pick the Popes so how can we pick Cardinals…

What an unbelievable statement! I am flabbergasted by the ACP, maybe I’ve had my head in the sand regarding liberal clergy in Ireland and elsewhere. I mean is there no-one out there, a lay catholic, anyone, that could make that ‘simple’ point to him and then get that comment into the media and stop all this utter nonsense? The ACP are so far of the rails now, they obviously DO think the running of the CC is by democratic vote.

BBC Northern Ireland has a total bias against the Catholic Church. Check out some of its recent stories if you doubt this.

God help all of the victims of sex abuse everywhere - all religions, all human institutions, including Hollywood. Let’s keep everything in perspective.

The Catholic Church is the True Church of Christ even if the devil gets some of his evil ones into it from time to time. “The Gates of Hell will not prevail against it” - Jesus protects His Church, as He has done for over 2,000 years.

Look up the policies (Objectives) of the ACP. Then you will not be so surprised. Read carefully!!

I think that this is one of those things where everyone is guilty to, some degree, of something. The priests are guilty of being pedophiles. The Church clergy are guilty of covering it up. The media is guilty of pouring salt in an already open wound. And we ourselves (including me) are guilty of fuelling the fire on this forum.
👍👍👍:

The best post in this thread. What we as Catholics need to do is to make sure that media attention seeking enemies within the church

…(and don’t pay these non-entities any respect by giving their names)

don’t get to push their agenda which is to change the church’s position on contraception and celibacy. Also defend the church’s teachings robustly because…

Guess who’s got involved everyone???

None other than the schizophrenic :whacky: Amnesty international!!!

Do you think there might be another agenda outside that of resolving abuse within the church!!!

Who??? I need to talk to a “trained theologian” before I write anything from now on and I’m very popular and a lovely guy.I might shout at frail and elderly people but it’s all for the greater good

The Chief Constable of the police force in Northern Ireland has now been asked to do an investigation into the latest evidence aired on BB, in relation to Cardinal Brady withholding evidence.

IMO this is more propaganda against the church, as this particular case has been investigated by the police since it came to light years ago.

***There will be no knee-jerk decision on whether to launch a police investigation into the latest claims levelled against the Catholic Church, a senior commander in Northern Ireland has insisted.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said allegations made in a TV documentary on the secret internal Church inquiry in 1975 into paedophile priest Brendan Smyth would be reviewed by specialist detectives first.

“For the last number of months there has been an investigation ongoing under an operation called Operation Charwell into alleged institutional abuse and this is really the context in which we will examine the material that was made available through the BBC documentary,” he said. “Before we launch into an investigation or make knee-jerk responses to that, we will take an objective, evidence-based assessment of the material that was in that programme.”

Just won’t happen and the reason is simple. This would open the floodgates on claims that abuse was discussed with doctors, teachers, policemen etc etc etc and “this was never reported”…

The other thing is that at the time these were ALLEGATIONS.

Guilty till proven innocent? OR…

I totally agree with you. It’s just a bit more ‘fuel’ for the fire to keep the flames burning a little while longer, i.e. keep it going in the media - even though they know it’s never going to happen.

There’s a certain “reporter” in Norn Iron who loves Mars bars and dislikes anything religious. Don’t give him a mention but what an odious, attention seeking individual. I agree with Peter Robinson on one thing; opinion of this pillock as a nobody.
Our big concern is Father Non Entity and the ACP. Time to ask them to stop which they won’t so get shut of them. TIme to get tough with these self important people who know that if they leave the church, the media will drop them like a hot brick

Read the article & the thread, & get with the programme and read the whole thread, then you wouldn’t:thumbsup: have to put questions marks (???) in your reply.

I read the article and the thread. The question marks are for effect.

Ask yourself how would you feel if it had been avowed atheist police officer Sean Brady who failed to do anything about a clear report of child abuse.

Ask yourself would you accept a defence of ‘I was only there to take notes. It was up to my superiors at the time to deal with the issue, not me.’

Would you want someone like that at the head of the police department?

a bad analogy, police department or there to uphold the law,
priests aren’t, since the atheist politicans who closed the irish embassy are now telling sean brady to resign, i hope he stays.atheists should recognise nothing to do with them and mind their own business.
just look at these boards how many atheists are here telling people what we should do, women priests gays etc etc
