'The Simpsons' under fire over concerns about racism

Jump on Netflix and watch The Case Against Apu. It discussed this matter very thoroughly.

The fact that this culture can murder off its unborn and defenseless at a rate unknown to any civilization and still preen its moral feathers on innocuous nonsense is not a good sign with regard to the future.
But we’ve got voice actor “equality” and preferred pronouns!!! So who cares about abortion? Being a rayyycisstttt is the greatest evil, for the culture, academia and award shows tell me so!

Just like the golden calf did in the time of Moses.

Muh friends! Muh friends!

This is a cartoon show that has been around for 30 years and cannot hire a separate actor to voice every single character on the show.
This is extremely true. 3 or 4 voice actors provide a plethora of voices for a show. It simply isn’t economical to hire a voice actor to match every race/gender/whatever.
In addition, the viewing audience does not see the voice actor, so it is not a case of someone having to be made up to look like an ethnic character when actual ethnic actors are available.
True again. And it raises a point of whether it’s racist to insist on an ethnically matched voice actor.

Do all black people sound the same? Do all Indian people?

You’re talking to a guy that was positive Nora Jones was black (due to her voice) until I saw her album cover. Hint: Not black.

We need to chill out about race and stop barking like dogs in the night at perceived racism.
The day we live in a truly post-racial society is the day I see a Martin Luther King biopic with the starring role played by some Asian guy. 🙂

I grew up hearing Joe Cocker on the radio for years, and didn’t know he was white until I was about 13 and saw a picture of him in a rock encyclopedia.

do. In the last decade or so a major movie was made using whiteface. That didn’t bother me nor most people. So blackface is fine too.
I have no issue with blackface either, doesn’t offend me in the least and I simply don’t see how it’s considered racist.

I also would have no issue with a black actor doing whiteface ala Dave Chapelle…

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I’m white, and that picture is not the least bit offensive to me.

When I was a kid, I thought that Chief Jay Strongbow was a native American and Gorilla Monsoon was Manchurian, because that’s what the announcers on TV stated.

Spoiler: both men were actually Italians from New Jersey.

No harm down, all in good fun.

I’m just waiting for Notre Dame to be protested for calling their team the “fighting Irish”. Oh the horror!

You’ve managed to get this discussion on abortion. Really?
The rationale behind abortion existing as a faux “right” is essentially the same one that drives the concocted set of supposed injustices behind the current push for social change.

It isn’t based upon anyone’s actual well-being, but on the abandonment of any legitimate sense of the common good replaced by personal affront and narcissistic pandering. The only reason it is effective is because a sufficient number of vociferous individuals have lost any reasonable sense of morality and purposeful existence.

Except this isn’t racism. It’s a running joke that is funny and it just goes to show that no matter how left-wing and cool you think you are, the SJW crybullies will come for you anyways.

Well people don’t have a problem casting a black guy as James Bond. Would the reaction be the same if a white guy was cast as Shaka zulu

but 30 years into the show, it’s still the same 6 people doing (almost) all the voices.
The actual cause of death for Flanders’ wife was the actress, err, voicetress, err, well, anyway, the woman who did his voice demanded more money. She was paid something like $700/episode, and had to fly in on her own dime (demanding more money is also a leading cause of death on soap operas . . .).

Just as long as the dreaded Chief Falling Rock was indeed indian. Neve captured, and too this day, there are warning signs all through the mountains of the western United States to watch out for him . . .

🙂

There are, unfortunately. Not Irish Catholics, but he’s been thrown at us as an example at which we’re supposed to be offended as Irish Catholics.

Or years ago with the fuss about the Tomahawk Chop, an indignant person asked in the paper how Catholics would feel if the Padres had a mascot dressed as a priest who crossed himself for every home run? Uhh, I’d go to more games?

I’m intrigued, do you also support the use of blackface? After all that would avoid identity politics too.
As Thomas Sowell pointed out, Harlem was a much safer place for both blacks and whites in the 1920s -1950s when people individually weren’t so easily offended by slight and unintended behaviours that may or may not have been racist in nature. White actors and musicians routinely went to Harlem and hung out there. Today, the area is unsafe for everybody. That, I suppose, is “progress” if you wish to see it that way.

Put another way, if your criteria for purchasing a car, or any other product or service depends upon the proportionate representation of all races and ethnicities, you are a fool. When I purchase a car, I personally don’t even think about the races of those who built it. I don’t care if it was built by black people, white people or purple people as long as the design and build quality are superior.

By the way, pretty much every character on the Simpsons was stereotyped, including Bart as a troublemaking boy, Lisa as an intelligent and creative girl, Homer as a clueless white man/father, Ned Flanders as a credulous Christian, etc., etc. that even includes the stereotyping of clowns, news anchors, scientists, business executives, police chiefs, you name it.

Why are you not advocating on behalf of white heterosexual males who were poorly misrepresented by Homer? Or scientists? Or black doctors? Or mayors and police chiefs? Or boys, in general?

I swear this society has lost any sense of humour and ability to laugh at its own foibles that it may have once had. How is that for a stereotype?
Ethnicity is often harder to work around than other traits.

Women can cut their hair and puut on male suits. Bald guys can put on a wig, short women can wear heels. Gay actors and actresses can, if they have even minimal acting ability, passably pretend to love people of the opposite gender. An Indian cannot change their skin colour.

A complicating factor is that where race can be worked around, it is one-sidedly the white actor who has the privilege of ‘blacking up’, for example to play Shakespeare’s Othello. Whereas you will rarely see black or asian or indian ctors similarly given opportunities to play Romeo or Hamlet except in the very occasional production involving an all or mostly black/asian/indian cast.

Tbh I’m an Indian and I don’t find it offensive at all because it’s a cartoon and stereotypes are emphasized in this show, like the Christian one.

Edit: but what I don’t appreciate is people diverting conversations about race to abortion or use it as an opportunity to write off all concerns about racism, as what we are seeing here. Sigh.
