Its better to acknowledge and celebrate cultural diversity, otherwise “colour blind” approaches tend towards white washing and ignoring problems that aren’t problems among white folks.
Maybe other cultures should try and act like western culture because it’s better if we don’t suffer from the same problems

I’m white, and that picture is not the least bit offensive to me.
Right, and that’s the point. Being white has never been seen as less-than or laughable by society at large. Being white sits in an ivory tower. There are no thick terms associated with being white, and there are too many positive depictions of white people to count in art and media.

No other race can say that.

This is a thin excuse for de-railing a thread by trying to pull the “abortion is more serious” card.
I’ll stand by my original comment, which was merely intended as an aside within that post.

I wasn’t doing a comparative, “abortion is more serious,” but now that you bring it up…

It is true that someone who can get all wound up in knots over the race of someone doing a voice in a cartoon but not even bat an eye that babies are being dismembered daily is likely suffering from some serious moral disengagement – if we wish to make an actual comparison, which I wasn’t.

You two have done more “derailing” than I did by focusing on that comment as if it was central to my post, but thanks for providing the opportunity to make a clearer statement.

Take this as a further derailment if you wish, I’m really not that interested in your censure. 😉

White ”supremacist" and the implicit insistence that ONLY whites – i.e., that “no other race” – can be RACIST, notwithstanding.

I don’t think cultural erasure is the best course of action.

You’ll notice that white supremacists aren’t a stereotype of white people. They’re a specific group; one that actually exists unfortunately. And they do a fine job of making themselves look like fools.

On the other hand I would be fine with buying a pair of hakama made by a non-Japanese person because Japan has made it rather clear that they approve of foreign folks using their cultural dress. I hope that makes sense?
I’ve lived in Asia.

People over there cannot believe how insane and hairsplitting the West’s ideas of “cultural appropriation” are. Clearly we have lost the plot.

I’m from the South. I don’t lose my mind every time someone who’s from my part of the world is portrayed as a racist, drawling dimwit - mostly because I know better and laugh at how sad it is that the writer finds that clever. (He’ll probably retire in Florida anyway. LOL.) Half my family is from the North - and I pay equal eye roll to the stereotypical portrayal of a New Yorker with a nasal accent who’s rude and pushy. I know better. And sometimes it’s okay to laugh at ourselves over both stereotypes - because let’s face it, sometimes they’re funny, and that’s fine.

“The Simpsons” is satire of the human existence. It’s been around for decades, yet suddenly in 2018, some group of people (and I wonder how old they were when this show was in its heyday) flips their lid about a character who hasn’t changed since his debut. Good grief.

It’s just dawned on me now why SNL is no longer funny. They got to it first.

I’m afraid that it seems folks are rather triggered over this event XD
It actually sounds really bad when people advocating SJW positions say this. And it doesn’t stick—Ever.
So far those “bullies” have made a video where they stated their points and explained that they would like something done.
Here’s a novel idea: they could just change the channel. I stopped watching the Simpsons years ago for a couple of reasons.

I just find it funny that even with all of the liberal virtue-signaling done by Matt Groening and the producers that this is happening to them. Even you won’t be exempted in the end, Alex.

It’s run its course. I agree. It used to be hilarious. Now it’s showing its age.

Change the channel? And miss out on all the things to be offended about? Never!!

Ironically, by watching, they boost the ratings.

It’s a matter of power too. While I’m not hugely into it when I studied Japanese fencing we learned a fair bit about why Japan doesn’t mind so much in this regard; they didn’t have their culture stolen and made “less than” is one of the big things.

It’s not just in Asia. The PC culture and its post-modern roots will either be destroyed or they will destroy themselves in the end.

Best thing we can do in the meantime is pray and keep on culturally appropriating. 👏😏

That’s fine, why don’t you just change the channel instead of complaining about the show they made? The folks who made this video want to have a conversation and that’s cool.

The Japanese are pretty much unfazed. So are the Koreans.

And if you think the Koreans didn’t have their culture all but destroyed by Japanese rule, you need to reread history.

Never mind your fencing class. The West has done its fair share to Asian - and Japanese - culture in its day.

It’s funny how you are trying to find ways of exempting yourself from your own standards.

Actually I’m a Social Justice Rogue, not warrior. I prefer dex over str. 🙂 And I’m afraid it certainly seems to have stuck in your craw.

How so? I was the one who brought up Japan originally as an example of how some cultures don’t mind this kind of thing and I explained why.

I think you might have misunderstood me - the Asians think we’re nuts over this stuff. They have better things to worry about.

PC “fundamentalism” needs to go the way of the dodo

You do realise that I was the one who brought them up as an example of not being bothered, right? I didn’t talk about Korea at all. 🙂 It’s a fascinatingly complex topic, I love it. It’s almost like different cultures find different things upsetting or something.

They don’t mind it because they don’t worry about it.

They actually see imitation as an honor, not a slight. It has nothing to do with imperialism.

Indeed; but other folks don’t. And we should respect other peoples cultures. I brought up the Japan example to demonstrate how one rule doesn’t work for all. I hope that makes sense?

Yes, I do. I’m an excellent reader.

I brought up Korea. I’ve lived there - just came back from there a few months ago, actually. It’s a discussion, I figured that would be okay.
