'The Simpsons' under fire over concerns about racism

😂🤣

So almost 2 decades of Matt Groening carrying the water for the American left wasn’t enough.

It’s only going to get worse, folks…

At the end of the clip, there was a line about getting more diverse voices. How can diverse voices end up being diverse? Political correctness will just make them all conform with only diversity in color or diction.

Didn’t they stereotype Apu to make fun of stereotyping?

I can’t find the clip on Youtube. In one classic episode, Homer, Otto, Apu, and Moe all formed a bowling team. I forget how, but Mr. Burns managed to boot Otto for his own place on the team. Burns bowled terribly and made the team lose repeatedly.

Realizing that his team was probably doomed, Apu looked over longingly at another bowling team called The Stereotypes. There was an Italian chef exclaiming “Mama mia!” and the pirate saying, “Arrrrr, mi maties. Arrrrr!” Apu put his head in his palm and lamented, “They begged me to join their team! BEGGED me!”

I can’t watch that scene without chuckling.

Matt Groening’s stuff was full of complex irony that, sadly, gets drowned out by cultural snowflakiness. Sigh. I miss The Simpsons from its glory days!

This is why you should never try to placate the left in any way. When you do so, you do not gain anything from them, but only serve to give them credibility.

The correct response to nonsense like this is mockery. Responding to it as if it were a legitimate concern, and not the hysterical reaction of overgrown children, will not get you anywhere.

Manufactured controversy to create a publicity bonanza for a show that has been going on forever.
Big yawn.

Every single character on that show is a massive stereotype. That’s usually the case in cartoons. People who decide to get all fired up about it now after two or three decades are just looking for attention themselves, or else need a hobby.

So, some folks of Indian ancestry say that this depiction is problematic and has aided in the proliferation of ignorance. They also would prefer if Indian characters were voices by Indian voice actors. What about that is so bad to say?

Oh, so now we’re stereotyping Indian voice actors? 😏

What “they” prefer should be ignored and treated as irrelevant. Taking “them” seriously is what got us into this PC mess to begin with.

The identitarian view of society and politics will only further divide and isolate.

Yep. Escalation or doubling down also is a great response. The people who make these kind complaints need to know they have no power.

I don’t think avoiding white washing media is a bad thing. We have Indian voice actors; why not use them?

If “we have Indian voice actors,” then clearly they are being used. There would be no point given the free market to be an Indian voice actor if there was no market for your services.

What you are advocating is basing the free market not on talent or competency but on race or ethnic identity.

Equality of outcome is a bad idea all around, not the least reason because it will “indicate” prejudice where none exists. Also, the intersectionality problem is insurmountable. Competency is a far better metric for who ought to be hired or not.

The Apu character has been on the Simpsons for almost 30 years and people are used to his voice. The character is a success;

Bart’s voice is done by a woman, Dr. Hibbert’s by a white guy, Krusty the Clown is done by a Gentile.

I’m intrigued, do you also support the use of blackface? After all that would avoid identity politics too.

Or more realistically; it is better to use a person from the minority being represented than to rely on white people doing impressions.

On The Simpsons there are a few actors that do the voice of dozens of characters on the show. Hank Azaria does Apu and he also does Moe, Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Carl Carlson, Cletus Spuckler, Professor Frink, Dr. Nick Riviera, Lou, Snake Jailbird, Kirk Van Houten, the Sea Captain, Superintendent Chalmers, Disco Stu, Duffman…etc.

Should the studio really go out to find an Indian actor to do the voice of one character to appease the PC?

Correction, to recognise the many people of this minority who find it problematic. And it would be great to add to the cast, it seems like am opportunity.
