The Singing, Anti-Fracking Nuns of Kentucky

And from Fr Z’s blog (and his epic post “Nuns Gone Wild”), we find the following:

Jeanine Gramick: co-foundress of the homosexual, lesbian activist organization New Ways Ministry. After a review of her public activities on behalf of the Church that concluded in a finding of grave doctrinal error, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) declared in 1999 that she should no longer be engaged in pastoral work with homosexual persons. In 2000, her congregation, in an attempt to thwart further conflict with the Vatican, commanded her not to speak publicly about homosexuality. She responded by saying, “I choose not to collaborate in my own oppression by restricting a basic human right [to speak]. To me this is a matter of conscience.” **In 2001, Gramick transferred to the Sisters of Loretto, another congregation of Catholic Sisters, one which supports her in her advocacy on behalf of homosexuals. **

In other words, this current issue seems completely consistent with other left-wing positions that the sisters have taken in recent decades.
 
As far as I understand from the issue, the Loretto Sisters’ land is not going to be fracked. The Bluegrass Pipeline will carry liquid natural gas through the 300 acres they own. That means the pipeline will be buried and then the grass and wetlands will be restored. But if it’s forested land, the trees will not be replaced, because the gas company needs access to maintain the pipeline.

The sisters will miss out on the worst part of fracking, i.e. their water quality is not being endangered. And it’s not an oil pipeline, so there’s no risk of spills. So they risk the pipe breaking and possible fires. So their beef must be symbolic. I don’t see how they are being hurt directly – unless its the loss of a 10-foot swath of trees. And they’ll probably get a large amount of money for their order. One would assume they could do a lot of good with that cash. 🙂

And so you say they are leftist wing nuts. OK. I buy that. That being said, there are serious risks to water quality associated with fracking. The Franciscan friars at my parish (who are part of Holy Name Province) are involved in anti-fracking protests. They may be considered leftist nuts too. But they don’t seem like it to me.

I’m not a tree hugger. I’m not an Occupy Wall Street type. I don’t take place in protest marches. I don’t oppose making profits. I think profits are good for our 401 K’s. In the past I have owned energy stocks (including BP and Transocean of Gulf oil spill fame). :eek: I favor safe energy exploration, clean coal and a gradual conversion to renewable energy.

I don’t oppose development as long as its done according to government regulations, which pretty much ensure that harm is minimized and habitat and wetlands are restored.

I never thought fracking was bad until I saw the movie “Gasland” – directed by Josh Fox. I was shocked to find out that the oil and gas industries are exempted from certain sections of Clean Air and Clean Water acts. :eek:

The film is overblown – a bit Michael Moore’s stuff. But a kernel of truth is there in the film. I checked with a friend of mine – an environmental scientist who works for big business – and she confirmed the danger to the water supply. So it’s not exactly flaky to oppose fracking.

I’m not telling you to listen to the Loretto Sisters, the Franciscans of Holy Name Province, or Josh Fox. And you don’t have to listen to me either (even though I’m not a left-wing tree-hugger).

But His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI did issue a statement on environmental responsibility in January 2010.

The environment must be seen as God’s gift to all people, and the use we make of it entails a shared responsibility for all humanity, especially the poor and future generations.

That makes environmental concern a legitimate duty of Christians – not a left-wing/right-wing issue.

I wouldn’t let anyone frack on my land. But I live on a teeny lot and I don’t own the mineral rights. My risk is minimal. 😃
