Isn’t the catholic view that non-Christians will go to heaven if they are good, even if they don’t believe in Christ?
No, actually not.
Jesus says: “No one comes to the Father, except through Me”. That means that if you live and die without having accepted the atoment death of Christ on the Cross, who payed the penalty for your sins, then you will not enter Heaven. Your own sins and the penalty for them will stand in the way.
Christ alone is our justification and sanctification. He washes us pure… makes us Holy through His own Love and Grace. Nothing we can do can get us a seat in heaven, except for the acceptance of the Son of God that willingly laid down His life for our salvation,…just like Abraham loved God so much he would give his most beloved son, so it is said about our Father in Heaven: “For so God loved the world (you and me), that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him, will not perish, but have eternal life.”
What the Church has written at a council can never be a contradiction of the direct words of God in Scripture, so when the Church humbly says: “We dont know the state of the souls of certain people… they may be saved” it is due to humility and in consideration of certain circumstances but our serious guideline is that Christ is the Door to Heaven.
If people have heard the Gospel and they have rejected it, then there is little hope for them. If they have never heard the Gospel in their life, then the guidance from their conscience is very important… however, to choose ones own flawed conscience over the way of Christ deliberately is a very dangeous thing. The wages of sin is death… so who can stand the test?
Of course guilt and knowlege go hand in hand. Yet no one is without conscience and today most people have heard the Good News of Salvation.
Then there is a mystical tradition in the Church that says Jesus will appear to the dying sinner at least at the moment of death to ask: “Who do you choose?” This has happend to quite a few people, however it is not dogma but a very special grace, so I would not count on it.
The Bible has said clearly: Believe and you shall be saved.
Christ is the only mediator, the One who reconciles us to Himself.
If you study the Old Testament you will see the expectation of this kind of Messiah: Eg: “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was put upon Him and by His wounds we are healed…”(Isaiah 53)
If you have not studied the many Old Testament prophesies about Jesus, describing His divinity and His atoning death in striking detail, then you must do it. These prophesies were written hundreds of years before Jesus of Nazareth walked on the earth. Its amazing.
Peace, and keep searching for the truth. The one who knocks sincerly… truly the Door will be opened to him.
