This is a reminder to the Roman Catholics of the United States who follow the Ordinary Form about next week’s Mass obligations.

This reminder is for you, if you are in the United States, AND if you are in one of the following ten states (Everywhere else, in the United States (i.e., outside of the ten states, listed below), the Ascension has been transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter (Sunday, May 13), and in such regions of the United States, the faithful are not obligated to attend Mass on the evening of Wednesday, May 9/some time on Sunday, May 10): Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Thursday, May 10 is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, and a Holy Day of Obligation. Please either contact your parish or consult your parish bulletin, for the Mass schedule, for the Holy Day.

In order to fulfill your obligation to attend Mass for the Ascension, you MUST attend Mass, either on the evening of Wednesday, May 9 (for the Mass of Anticipation (fulfills the obligation to attend Mass, for the Holy Day)), OR some time on Thursday, May 10.

NOTE: Remember to fulfill your Sunday obligations to attend Mass, as normal. Attending Mass to fulfill your obligation for the Ascension WILL NOT fulfill your obligation to attend Mass for the preceding and/or following Sunday, and vice-versa.
  • Moreover, deliberately/freely choosing not to attend a Mass for a Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation (grave matter and deliberate consent), along with full knowledge of the gravity of the sin (and that the act is sinful, of course), together, is a mortal sin. Keep that in mind.
You have been warned…

In the regions of the United States that have transferred the Ascension from the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, the Masses on the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter are celebrated as an Easter weekday, and NOT as the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The Seventh Sunday of Easter is celebrated as the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord.

In the regions of the United States that continue to celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord on the Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter (CT, ME, MA, NE, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, and VT), the Seventh Sunday of Easter is its own celebration.

Thank you for the reminder. Good looking out for your fellow CAF brothers and sisters.

Correct, and since the Seventh Sunday of Easter is the Ascension for those outside of the ten states that I mentioned above, you wouldn’t have to go on the previous Thursday. You need only go on that following Sunday.

After the Ascension, our next Holy Day of Obligation will be on August 15 (The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). This year, August 15 falls on a Wednesday, so it will be a Holy Day of Obligation.
