I love when people use scare quotes in such a trite manner. It tells me volumes. Yes, my opinion is just mine and yours is just yours and neither of us have the authority to tell a religious order what they should or should not do.
Your tripe is immaterial to me…do as you will.

I checked the good Monsignor’s blog again today and still not see any reply from you - or is correcting the promulgation of this heretical, anti-Catholic, anti-Marian song also immaterial tripe?

I don’t understand this dodginess.

Sonburn, please clear your private mesages if you wish to continue our discussions as your is full up and cannot receive any more words of wisdom!!

I always want to scream “YES”
Me too!

This song always reminds me of an Easter play I witnessed at an evangelical ecclesial community. One scene was the wedding at Cana. They took “artistic license” and had the Blessed Virgin apologize for asking Jesus to do something about the wine!

Is Mary queen of heaven?

The only occurrences of the phrase “Queen of Heaven” in the Bible are in reference to a false pagan goddess (see Jeremiah 7:18; 44:17-25).
Nebuchadnezzar is referred to as “king of kings” in the Bible (Ezekiel 26:7).

Surely that doesn’t mean that we can’t refer to Jesus as King of Kings.

“Mary, Did you know” is a beautiful song.

Granted, it is not something one should sing at mass but it is still a beautiful song. It is a song that introduces to many the idea that we should respect the role that Mary played in the passion of Christ.

It is not the text of an encyclical, it is not even a homily. It is not a teaching instrument per se.

What it is, is a beautiful little song about Our Lady. If one person hears it and is led to think more about Mary and then Jesus and His Church then it is a fabulous thing. To sing it in Church could be heresy, but since the song in and of it self is NOT attempting to teach the letter of the law. It is one man’s attempt to honor his Mother. Even if he still fails to recognize her as such.

Let the gnat gagging resume.

I’m waiting for the liberal Catholic sequel to this song…

“Jesus, Did You Know?”

Wow, it’s like deja vu all over again 🤷

The name-calling, the vicious arguments…

Isn’t one uncharitable thread about this song enough?!

Here’s a suggestion from the one who started the first thread on this subject (now with some regret): Turn off your computer, go light the candles on your Advent wreath, and pray for all the poor fools who disagree with you. Then go out and shovel the neighbor’s walk, or cook a meal for someone sick/mourning/lonely, or visit a nursing home, or pet a dog, or just do something useful.

Many Catholics are not aware of the fact that the song “Mary Did You Know”, is heretical.

“Mary Did You Know” is a very popular song with many Catholics. Many, however, are not aware that the song in heretical and should not be performed in Catholic venues. Below is a critique of this song by two orthodox priests.

Fr. M. Wrote:

Your suspicions regarding “Mary, Did You Know?” are correct. The very title of the song is misleading. We need to remember some of the effects of Mary’s Immaculate Conception. One effect was that she received the same gifts that Adam and Eve had before the Fall. One set of gifts Adam and Eve had are the preternatural gifts, of which there were 3 kinds. The one of most interest to this discussion is infused knowledge. Infused knowledge is a special knowledge of the providence of God. It is the ability to see in the natural the supernatural of what God is doing. Mary saw the supernatural ramifications of all that Jesus said and did. Recall that Luke tells us that Mary “pondered all these things in her heart.”

Also, Mary was “full of grace” from the moment of her conception. Her will was completely united to the will of God at all times. She experienced throughout her life the “transforming union”, the pinnacle of the spiritual life possible here one earth. Souls in that state of union have a much greater knowledge and love of God, the spiritual writers teach us. Plus, Mary knew the Hebrew Scriptures intimately. So she knew that Jesus was the Incarnate Word of God (Lk. 1) as well as the Suffering Servant of Yahweh (Is 52-53). She also knew from Simeon’s words that she would suffer with Him. Conclusion: she knew a lot more than is implied by the song “Mary, Did You Know?”. Please do not include that song in your repertoire. Hope all this helps.

Fr. A, Wrote:

You hit the nail on the head re: the lyrics of the song. My concerns are the same as yours. The song is an appeal to the mystery surrounding the Incarnation and Nativity. That’s fine, as far as it goes. The lyrics, however, leave the door open to erroneous and heretical opinions, thanks to their ambiguity. I would avoid performing or promoting the song for that reason.
Thank YOU! I was taught that in school decades ago. I know she knew. Real reason I’m posting is because it was sung at the Mass I attended today. I couldn’t believe my ears and waited until the refrain was repeated. Now if I can remember something so long ago, what is wrong with the priests?

OK, why is there such a big issue with this song. First off, Mary Lowry & Buddy Greene wrote a beautiful song. Both of them - Christians

Next - Since when did we start to evaluate evey song? I would say this is a move towards being heretical instead of the song.

Finally - If this is the view of the priest in that church, I am glad I don’t attend there. If this is the view of the catholic church, I will now begin to question many more things. We are not in the Dark Ages where the church dictates what we can and can not listen to or do. If being a catholic means moving backwards instead of forward with my faith, you can count me out.

The idea that this is even brought up with such a beautiful song. Let’s worry about feeding the poor, healing the sick, taking care of our own, helping the millions in Haiti and around the world. PLEASE give up some of your money catholic church and help.

Spoken like a true modernist.

As time passes we shouldn’t become more to modern, new age thinking and trends. We should become more critical with everything that gives the appearance of deviating from the sound doctrine of traditional catholic teaching.

First: Buddy and Lowry may be christians but are they catholic and if they are…well it was a loose composition/arrangement of the mystery that is Mary Theotokos.

Next: We have always scrutinized things that carry a deceptive or questionable christian label. As I mentioned previously we need to become more vigilant and not more permissive and compromising of even the slightest thing.

Finally: We are well underway to a new and darker Dark Ages. The coming of Jesus Christ in glory is not an event that is getting further away as time passes, it is in fact getting closer. Lucifer will use everything in his arsenal - overt and phenomenal to subtle and inocuous to decieve and delude our vigilance. You wanna be counted out???

Think carefully my friend.

There’s a story about Alexander the Great.

One night while on bivouac with his army, Alexander decided to take a walk through camp as most generals do when their caught up on official matters and can’t sleep.

He came upon a soldier asleep on guard duty. The penalty for sleeping on guard duty was to be doused with fuel and burnt alive.

The soldier wakes up to see Alexander towering over him and snaps to attention.

Alexander asks the soldier, " what is your name soldier!?"

The soldier replies, " Alexander"

Alexander is at the same time enraged and taken aback and inquires with greater force, “what is your name soldier!!?”

The soldier replies and clarifies, " my name is Alexader my lord".

At this Alexander grabs the soldier by the armature and raises him to within inches from his face and says, " Change your attitude or change your name!!!"

Drops the stunned soldier and walks away, forgiving the soldier’s life.

We Catholics can learn a lot from this Alexander the Great story.

Change your attitude or change your name!

For Heaven’s sake it’s a stinkin’ song-not a theological thesis.Song-poetry.? Poetic license ?
There does seem to be a lot of over-analysis of smaller matters at this forum. Heresy seems to be a strong accusation to hurl at a song.

Some people need to get a life and stop over analyzing EVERYTHING- it’s a song.not even a hymn.a song. Are people going to discuss the theological import of “chattnooga cho cho” or “Lucy in the sky with diamonds?” it’s really ridiculous. Do people really listen to music for it’s theological witness?I mean, atheists enjoy chant and medieval hymns-has that turned their outlook? Have they turned to Christ in droves? no.people are giving importance to something unimportant.Making it an issue when it is not.And by calling it"evil"or heresy they just got a few thousand extra people to listen to it to see what the hubbub is about.
by naming something “heretical” people are usurping the place of the church.Determining what is heretical and what is not is up to the pope ,his bishops and the magisterium. Not the laity so until something is said from the top I’ll go enjoy my heretical music, my heretical books ,my heretical thoughts and ideas(not by church standards but designated by the folks on CAF).Laity naming something heretical IS heretical because they have no power to do so.Kinda like a Catch-22 situation?!

I agree that my choice of the word “heretical” was not the best. In a later post I changed that to say that the song is “theologically inaccurate”.

In the song, Mary is asked a series of questions. The main problem, from a Catholic point of view, is with one particular question; "Mary, did you know that the baby you delivered, “would soon deliver you?”.

This question assumes that Mary, is herself, in need of deliverance, assumes that she is a sinner. This is opposed to everything that Catholics believe about the Mother of God. If one accepts this verse as true, then this leads to a denial of the Immaculate Conception, which would be heresy.

Mary was “delivered” at the instant of Her conception. She was conceived immaculately and was never subjected to even the slightest tainting of original sin. The song would also tend to confirm protestants in their erroneous belief that Mary was a sinner just like everyone else, thus diminishing the honor She is rightly due.

As one priest wrote, *“The lyrics, however, leave the door open to erroneous and heretical opinions, thanks to their ambiguity. I would avoid performing or promoting the song for that reason”.

Above are the lyrics.

Love the line where she’s asked if she knew when she kissed Him, she was kissing the face of God.

IMO, Mary is being asked a series of questions. What is needed is the second part of the song where Mary answers…“Yes, I did Know.”

Mary’s knowing is what makes her so very special. Because she knew He would be crucified.
but if she knew that, why was she so surprised to find Jesus in the temple teaching… when they had lost him for 3 days???

why did she not understand his words about doing his father’s business???

There is such a volume of evil in the World, I doubt some lyrics to a well meaning Christian song that is theologically not quite correct, is even one drop in the bucket compared to the moral taint from watching one day of TV programming on a mainstream station.

Sometimes I feel that the right answer is a few ounces of water gargled briefly and spit out.

That should clear the gnat we sometimes gag upon.

SHAME ON YOU Mangy Dog! Welcome to the 21st Century. As I had stated in my original post, Mark Lowry & Buddy Greene are CHRISTIANS not Catholics. I am now realizing that there is a BIG difference.

If you study the bible, you will know that the teaching of Jesus were criticized by everyone because of his “new” and “modern” way of thinking. So, if you are going to say that I am a modernist, I take that as a compliment. You need to get a grip on life and apply the teachings of Jesus to our current way of living and not move backwards.

If you think that the Catholic religion is the “Only” religion, you are sadly mistaken. I was raised Catholic and know the teachings of the church, but I also went to a Christian University and studied religion and the bible extensively.

For you to say or even consider that this song is a part of satan or his army is WRONG! I think you need a reality check to real life and come out from under your stone.

I have noticed that you seem to sit back and criticize everyone on here. Maybe you should examine yourself and remove the beam from your own eye first.

Thank about that my friend.
