The soul and pornography

To control our thoughts and be more faithful we must not become greater and stronger, but smaller and weaker.

As for our thoughts, no sin is mortal unless there is deliberate consent, and you can always tell if there has been deliberate consent. To be blunt: a woman dressed provocatively walks by. If in my mind I chose to indulge on what I see and desire to possess her and imagine having a physical encounter with her, I’d say that is mortal sin. If I feel something and simply keep moving forward and shift my thoughts towards other things (especially spiritual things) then no matter what I saw, it is not mortal sin.

And I draw the line as follows: when I don’t see her as a soul, as a whole human being, but as parts, I know I am in danger of grave sin.

Devotion to Our Lady helps very much in this context.

Hum. If a provocative woman walks by I’m always going to look but I never in any circumstances don’t see a soul or a human being. I have too many girls I like for that and some of them are pretty, some aren’t. And this hollywood sexy girl stuff doesn’t work on me either. If I see a pretty reasonably dressed woman I’m going to shake her hand and ask her name and give her mine. I don’t ask for numbers I see a potential friend. But I’m going to look too I can see. Let’s hope grace changes that if it needs to be changed right now I’m getting an aversion to porn and cursing.

I am interested in what pornography and sins against chastity do to the animal and divine part of our souls. First the soul must be defined and I guess Aristotle and Thomas have probably done that. I know it destroys dignity too.
These fleshly sins seem to be the hardest to overcome and are the most common in us.

Re: “the person who watches and contemplates pornography.” Inevitably the day will come (a lot sooner than you think) when you will gaze upon the holy female aspect of God (perhaps you will meet or see a nun, or a photo of a nun, a female saint, or think of Mary, etc.) and you will start to entertain pornographic thoughts about her. There, that is what is wrong with it. Avoid it like the plague.

If a pornographic thought does happen to enter you mind, quickly say the name of God. His love and forgiveness is just a quick. I don’t care what religion you belong to, these beautiful word of Philippians 4:8 should be one of your guides, “brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Avoid it like the plague.
