So, I’ve been a vegetarian for 7 years or so. I’m considering becoming a meat-eater again. The last problem I’m facing is the ethical dilemma of suffering:
The suffering of animals is something we should strive to avoid. Using animals for meat causes them causes them to suffer more than necessary, and this cannot be avoided. Even if we treat animals as well as possible, they still have to be killed and slaughtered, and last I checked, no animal producers put their cows to sleep (like a vet would a dog) before slaughtering it.
The alternative–not eating meat–seems better because the animals are not caused to suffer. And while this may mean the animals are never born, isn’t it better to never breed an animal than to breed the animal and then cause it to suffer?
Thoughts?
