Are the offspring infertile, like mules?

If not, I stand corrected. Truly, all I know for sure is that life has a great and often surprising power to carry on. Praise God!

You’ve lost me there, in more ways than one. I’ll let you beat this dead horse while I look for a thread that bears more directly on faith, hope, and love.

Wait a sec… I said I was out of here, but I just found the latest currently-raging thread on the topic.

Why you should think that the Natural-Evolution of species is true Philosophy
This is just a commonsense argument. If God created species, then apart from animals that have gone extinct, all the animals that exist today should be no different from when they were first created; there should be no new species. So it should be true that the Platypus has always existed for as long as there have been animals. From the moment animals existed they ought to be identical to the animals that live today. The evidence does not bare out that cl;aim. So while one might not want to ta…
That’s another 2700+ posts for you to read. If all your question aren’t in there somewhere, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle… or would that be a monkey’s nephew? 😉 Bye!

There’s a Creationist theory that God didn’t necessarily create individual species. Rather, He created “kinds”. Wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs are part of the dog “kind”. Horses, donkeys, and zebras are part of the horse “kind”. Etc. The individual species developed from selective breeding over time, but they ultimately trace back to a group of common ancestors of that “kind”.

Remember that dog breeds were created through artificial selection. Humans identified traits that they wanted in their dogs and selectively bred them for those traits.

We see “micro-evolution” within species and “kinds” all the time. For example, most adults have their wisdom teeth removed. Our modern jaws are too small to hold all of them comfortably. There are people who don’t get all of their wisdom teeth. My father only had three and so did I. My aunt had none at all. We are possibly more “highly evolved” than everyone else - but we’re still human.

Well here is a question for you, Did dogs evolve from wolves?

Totally wrong. Dogs when selective breeding stops will return to wolves.

In fact, the breeders are acknowledging they are at a breeding dead end.

Alright….granted that some of the species evolved into something else in this planet….naturally. I do not think dogs are in this category. 😄

With regards to dogs, it is more of selective breeding rather than evolution. You know, if two tall people have kids, they will most likely be tall too, and the next generation taller, etc. etc.

Evolution, I think, is the adaptation of the species to something radical. Ex. animals get smaller because of shortage of food, or they learn to breathe on land instead of water. While dogs are “made” to accommodate the likes of humans.

(Cats for example I do not think have evolved….they have simply learned to tolerate us. 🤣)

The problem with that is the vagueness of the term ‘kind’, creationists (specifically of the young earth variety) won’t and I suppose in some ways can’t define the term without its meaning having to shift. Given that they are typically sola scritura and I know Catholics aren’t but, the Bible groups animals as kinds and sorts but gives no further information as to what those terms mean.

It is possible to breed canines and/or their descendants among each other. Of course, sometimes natural selection or artificial breeding come out with species that won’t be able to breed for physical reasons (not genetic). Besides, they all have common ancestors.

What is theory, not proven, is that someday a canine or its descendants may breed with a feline or its descendants (or canines and felines have common ancestors). This is the theory of evolution. This is what is has always been contested.
