This shows someone who clearly does not read scripture and has no idea of what they are talking about. Don’t accuse me of being ignorant to a faith I lived for decades and then not respond to garbage like this in a fashion in which it obviously deserves. You folks are hypocrites to a fault.
Did you read my post?
I said I don’t understabnd…how am I a hypocrite?
When did I accuse you of being ignorant?

I do read scripture but am a ‘new christian’ just returned after 25 years of partying.

Anyway nice way of avoiding answering a straight question.

Oh please! It’s only error in the eyes of the CC. The CC wanted to have supreme authority in all decision making and if anyone disagrees, then they are in error.
You clearly don’t even know early Christian history: one instance we can cite was the case of Arius. Do you think that if we let Arius have his way, understanding about the Trinity would be there? Yet the Church itself held its ground, and declared Arius a heretic. But of course, with 30,000+ denominations, all claiming to have the Bible as authority, yet having little agreement, Arius will have some place in some sect out there.

My thanks to both mozart-250 and djrakowski for your kind defence.

This whole thread with Brandon’s remarks reminds me of when Archbishop Fulton Sheen was talking to an ex-Catholic on an airplane, who was condemning the Catholic Church. FS has a sudden insight and asked the man, “How much did you steal?” And he called it right.

Scott Hahn also had a similar experience in talking to a couple of ex-Catholics. It turned out that the man had been divorced and remarried. His anger concentrated on “What right has the Catholic Church to say we couldn’t marry?”

I encountered this attitude when working in a Crisis Pregnancy Center. A fellow parishioner almost foamed at the mouth when I tried talking to her. It later turned out that she had driven her daughter to an appointment at an abortion clinic and held her hand throughout the abortion.

Afterwards, she felt the need to justify her action and was quite angry with the Prolife Movement and its supporters.

So I wonder, what is making Brandon so angry towards Catholics who choose to obey Church Teaching? People who just leave (or drift away) don’t have this level of animosity. Some major prayer is needed here.

I pray that God, in His Infinite Love and Mercy, will grant to Brandon the grace to know the Truth and be set free from his anger and lack of charity towards Catholics.

1 Cor.13: 4-5 *Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil; *

and verse 13 *And now there remain faith, hope, and charity, these three: **but the greatest of these is charity. ***

Brandon, instead of telling us we are ignorant, why don’t you pick one topic at a time and ask us what we believe and what the Church teaches about that particular topic.

I’m getting tired of these hit and runs.

When Man fell, God banished him out of paradise, and sin entered the world. In a short period of time, sin had completely taken over. If eating an apple caused all that to happen, don’t you think it’ll take more than just faith alone to heal the rift???

Yeah…me too. Where’s the answer???

 Why am I:shrug: not surprised???

Still waiting, Branden. Waiting, waiting, and waiting…:dts:
Im still waiting for an answer to mine, and mine was on the first page of this thread

I don’t believe that anything I do alone is going to save me. What an erroneous notion and flatly contradictory to scripture. GOD’S GRACE saves us. Guess what else? We can’t even have faith without first being given the Grace to have it.

By the way, your post reveals your ignorance of the Catholic Church’s teachings. If you want to be taken seriously, why don’t you learn what is taught by the Church before you post. No Catholic believes that Mary saves us. We love and honor Mary as our mother, because we are striving to be as Christ like as possible. Those who do not love and honor her certainly are not acting as Christ did.

Oh, and yes, the Catholic Church existed prior to the fourth century. It is referenced by name by St. Ignatius in 107AD. I’m not sure when they shifted from being called “Christians” to being called Catholic but it was within 100 years of Christ’s death and resurrection. Perhaps they wanted to pick a name that represented the Church’s universality? Maybe they looked to scripture to find such a title. Perhaps they looked to Acts 9:31 and saw “the Church throughout all” (ekklesia kath olos) and thought that it had a nice ring to it. It is indeed, the Church throughout all. Exactly as Christ intended it to be.
They picked the name Catholic to signify universality in orthodoxy, orthopraxis, doctrine and dogma, as opposed to Gnostic heretics.

the Holy Church doesn’t need a name… it doesn’t have a proper name, except Christ’s Church – and His Church is the one whose earthly head is the Bishop of Rome and whose Heavenly head and founder is Jesus Christ, the God and Savior of mankind.

Oh please! It’s only error in the eyes of the CC. The CC wanted to have supreme authority in all decision making and if anyone disagrees, then they are in error. This is precisely what goes on still today. The CC did it to Luther and they have did it to the Evangelicals and now they are trying to do it to the Anglicans. Well, I personally don’t care what the CC says on anything because I bank my salvation on Jesus alone and not the obedience to the Catholic church. Amen
AMEN indeed! I bank my salvation on Jesus alone and the Church He founded, the Catholic Church. 👍

I find it so strange when people say, “We are saved by Jesus, not by the Catholic Church” as if Catholics think they are saved by the Church “instead of” by Jesus. Catholics believe we are saved BY Jesus THROUGH the Church.

If BrandonRush is still around I have a few simple questions to ask
Check your history. No Orthodox nor Anglicans either. Just the early Christian church.
BrandenRush, Is this the Christian Church that you now attend? If so please prove to us that you are following the exact same teachings as that early Church. I am curious to know which is the true Church you are following. Please give us citations and examples that you are doing what that early Church was doing.
What so you have but statements from mere men who claim that their Tradition trumps scripture.
Please prove to us that this is what the Catholic Church teaches. Site your sources.
You have just simply bought into everything that the church procliams whether it be in accordance with scripture or not and whether you understand it or not. This is certainly not what Jesus preached in the Gospels. I am an Ex-Catholic because of what I know to be the truth and how it is profoundly different from what comes from Rome
Please give us examples of where the CC preaches that goes against the teaching of Jesus. Since you now know the truth please give us a few examples of those truths vs the lies of the CC. In other words, give examples of what it is that the CC taught that is wrong and what you now know to be the truth is really the truth from the Early Church.

Hit and run, for sure. I bet he’s gone, and likely back to his pentecostal on-line community.

So what is the real reason that you left the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. By following this thread and reading your visceral responses it appears that it is not because you have suddenly found the “Truth”, rather there is some required “Rules” of faith such as divorce, NFP, abortion, and so on that some Protestant religions turn a blind eye to that fits your situation. This is usually the case, I find that the ones kicking and screaming the hardest and loudest really know the “Truth” they just can’t bring themselves to admit it.

After reading the first few posts in this thread by the OP (and laughing my rear end off), all I can think is good lord, what idiots (faith and history-wise) fundamentalism can produce.
How ANYONE with even a SMIDGEON of knowledge of Church history can assert that the Church of the 1st four centuries WASN"T the Catholic Church, is beyond me. You have to be a complete ignoramus to assert such a ridiculous, asinine thing.
The Christians of Southern India have been Christians since the
first century A.D., and they are, and have always been, CATHOLICS even though Southern India wasn’t under the control of the Roman Empire (which supposedly FORCED Catholicism on the Church after the 4th century). Thomas brought Catholicism to India, and every Indian Catholic Christian knows it.
Fundamentalism is so false that it is obscene.

Thank you for the history lesson, sometimes we need to be reminded of stuff like this.

I love this guy :extrahappy:

It’s as if he came busting into a steakhouse yelling at us " THAT STUFF IS MADE FROM DEAD COWS!!! DID YOU KNOW THAT!!!" meanwhile we all just stare at him blankly, chewing away at our steaks. :ehh:
LOL that analogy is DEAD ON!! 👍 :rotfl:

It is by faith alone in Christ Jesus that we are saved. Because without THAT as the starting point, all else is futile.

But, beyond that, we get into the judgement Seat of Jesus Christ, or, as catholics call it, purgatory. Same thing, really.

Yes, we are saved. We will see Heaven, if we repent of our sin. Forgiveness - a beautiful gift and our sins will be buried in the Sea of Forgetfullness never to be remembered no more.

Yet, just as fire purifies-the impurities purged- all who are saved will undergo this . All our vanities, our true intentions, our fleshly desires, will be burned away. I, for one, am not looking forward to this process. It is not going to be pretty.

Catholic teaching is that, by recognizing that these faults remain even after sin is confessed, that this purging(call it purgatory or the Judgement Seat) can be balanced by good works, prayer, fasting, so that these worthless faults can be cleansed from our spirit now rather than later. To become a new creature, to be born-again.

All this is entirely Scriptural. The Catholic Chruch is correct.

The truth here is that what I said is backed totally by scripture after scripture. What so you have but statements from mere men who claim that their Tradition trumps scripture.
Scripture IS Tradition
We also don’t believe one trumps the other. They go hand in hand

This whole thread is really just sad. I enjoy reading posts from respectful. open-minded people with a genuine thirst for the truth. I do not, however, have much patience for those with an obvious agenda. Especially if they are ridiculously uninformed about that which they are attacking.
MUCH better protestant theologians have tried this same arguement for the past 500 years. Guess what? It didn’t work then, and it sure won’t work now if this person is the best they can offer. Like the others, my prayers are with you and for you.

Steve

Even as a Lutheran, here is the problem I have with that statement of Faith Alone.

What about someone who, by baptism, and thus faith, is saved, but never lives a Christian life? (never attends church, drinks, does drugs, even has a criminal rap sheet, etc., etc., etc.) Are they going to instantly get into Heaven? (rhetorical question)
