These poor people have been studied and social worked and Royal Commissioned to death.The ugly truth is that there are no jobs,a plethora of alcohol,drugs and gasoline sniffing is rampant among the young.The elders don’t follow the traditional ways and cannot teach these to the young.
There is no employment to speak of except bush work-pulp cutting and handicrafts.Canada’s reserve systen is a soul destroying bureaucratic nightmare that hasn’t worked for 200 years.Obesity,heart disease and diabetes are rampant.In the main the natives do not wish to integrate as they are fearful of losing their identity and their cultures foster softspokeness and passivity wherein it is difficult to compete with non-natives,so we welfare them to death.It’s beyond sad and it’s Canada’s shame.Everyones so concerned about the Seal Hunt but no one cares about the daily tragedy on our Reservations.Guess they’re just not as cute as baby seals.

This is why it is a mistake to allow them to try and carry on their primitive culture. The Church should be forcibly erected for them.Assimilation is the only possible solution to their situation.

It always makes me happy that Americans don’t control our culture in Canada. I’m always thankful for our multi-cultural society.

You should look up Louis Riel. He’s a bit of a folk hero here in Canada (unless they’re of British decent or Protestant, then they probably hate him). He was a Métis and fought 2 rebellions for Native and Métis rights. It’s because of him we now have the province of Manitoba, and probably because of him we have lots of Catholics in the west (if English Canada had their way, it’d be all Protestants out here).Hiyas

hi Kimmie,greetings to you.I wonder if you had a chance to see the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Vancouver.My Government,Canada and the First Nations of the Lil’wat,Musqueam,Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh were present as equal dignitaries.My heart soared and I was so proud of our native peoples and the government of Canada for recognizing their right and DUTY to be there.We have a treasure in our First Nations and hopefully they will acheive ALL of their potential.They have been patrionized and treated as children for far too long.Did you know that Elijah Harper a native legislator scuttled the Meech Lake accord that would have caused defacto seperation of our country?He stood in parliament in his 3 piece suit and braids and holding an eagle feather,he was the only one to say NO! and thus saved our country.Google him.Do you know of Joseph Brant the Mohawk chief who with General’ Brock saved Upper Canada ffrom the American invaders during the war of 1812. pax sweetie

I’m Irish I guess but I sure am from Manitoba,born in St Boniface and have visited Louis grave at the Basilica which infortunately burned down, many times.He truly is the Father of our Province and if the British hadn’t hanged him I’m sure he would have been a Father of Conferation.Also look up Louis Dumont another Metis.Also check out Chief Poundmaker.
When I went to Catholic school I went with The Irish,Scots,Mucho Ukrainians and tons of French and Italians.All gloriously Catholic and taught by Ursuline nuns.
Did you know that Chief Sitting Bull came to “the Grandmother’s Land” Canada after the Little Big Horn(sorry I don’t know the Souix term for the battlr with the Americans in hot pusuit and the army was turned away fom Canada by the NorthWest Mounted Police and were given sanctuary?

Nice try, but he did not scuttle Meech Lake. You can fool the Americans if you wish, but history, and the rest of the country knows who killed Meech–Pierre Trudeau. It was Trudeau speaking out publically against Meech Lake that effectively ended the idea.

Oh don’t be reactionary. I am one who does not buy into this PC view of native cultures. They are what they are-their traditional ways are barbaric. They should not be on reserves receiving what amounts to welfare from taxpaying citizens. As one Canadian, I resent every free penny they get. they should enter the mainstream of our culture and have to work for what they have like all the rest of us.Their ways should be regulated to history. Biggest mistake we made was closing the Catholic schools we had for them.

A folk hero??? Not exactly how I’d refer to him. I am French-Canadian and Catholic, and do not consider a man who lead a violent rebellion against the newly formed Canadian government a “folk hero”.
