What is the unpardonable sin against the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Scriptures? How do you commit this blasphemy?

I would say the only unpardonable sin is rejecting God’s love and forgiveness. He doesn’t force that upon you. His grace is cooperative. So if one were to change their mind and accept God’s love and forgiveness then one is in good shape.

but if it were only rejecting grace then it could be forgiven. Jesus said that the blasphemy of the H.S. could not be forgiven:doh2:

i’ve always been confused by this coz even blasphemy of the son can be forgiven, ie rejection of Jesus.

in context it must have something to do with saying God’s works are performed by the devil or something like that. any more ideas?

Considering the Holy Spirit is the paraclete and sanctifier, the ultimate blasphemy against the Holy Spirit would be to be unrepentant for one’s sins.

I had always heard from protestant and Catholic teachers alike that the unpardonable sin against the HS is for one to associate the HS with the devil, such as when the teachers of the law accused Christ of sending out demons by the power of demons.

Quite right. Also, have a look at what Peter said in Acts 5:1-10, particularly verse 9, where he specifically mentions the Holy Spirit. We hear much about the power of binding and loosing of sin that Jesus gave to Peter (Matthew 16:19) and to the Apostles (Matthew 18:18). This incident appears to be a case of Peter binding Ananias’ and Sapphira’s sins to them, rather than loosing them.

So, just to clarify, I’m aware that it’s blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, I was just unaware of how you could commit it. I like this idea of " the unpardonable sin against the HS is for one to associate the HS with the devil, such as when the teachers of the law accused Christ of sending out demons by the power of demons." So, if anyone was to commit this sin, it wouldn’t ever be able to be forgiven? Or, does anyone else have a different answer? I like the answers that are coming, but I’m alawys open to new suggestions.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church: 1864 said:
“Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

The emphasis is mine to hopefully answer your question.

From what I’ve learned though, it’s not like if you say this once and you are therefore eternally damned. Catholic and protestant teachers alike have said that it is a continuous chosen life saying that the HS is of the devil. Now I could be wrong on this, but I’ve just always heard that. Its the same again with the teachers of the law accusing Jesus of sending out the demons with the power of demons. The works that Christ was doing were good and obviously OF GOD, but the teachers continuously rejected this stating it as evil So it’s not like just a one time thing, it a continual life long protest against the HS.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

In principle, it is similar to Moses granting writs of divorce “because of the hardness of your hearts” (Matthew 19:8). Remember, Jesus was speaking to, and about, those same hearts that solicited his betrayal, and who had already attempted to kill Him. As well, His statement about that sin never being forgiven was also a prophecy which was fulfilled in their lifelong rejection of Jesus. They persisted, and perished, in their hardness of heart.

I completely agree…and better written than my answer

Very Good. the footnote for this in my JB reads: There is some excuse for not recognising Christ’s divine nature since it is hidden under the appearance of an ordinary “son of man”, but there is no excuse for blinding oneself to the manifest works of the Spirit. The man who denies these is resisting God’s most direct appeal and putting himself outside the range of God’s saving grace.

See Heb.6:4-6 As for those people who were once brought into the light, and tasted the gift from heaven, and received a share of the Holy Spirit, and appreciated the good message of God and the powers of the world to come and yet in spite of this have fallen away–it is impossible for them to be renewed a second time. They cannot be repentant if they have willfully crucified the Son of God and openly mocked him.

Also see Heb. 10:26-31

Hello! I never miss a thread on this subject as it has puzzled me for a long time.

To be honest, I’m still confused. Just what IS blaspheming the Holy Spirit in practical terms? Telling the Holy Spirit to go jump in a lake? Using a swear word against the Holy Spirit? Claiming that some action of the Holy Spirit is from Satan? But if you don’t really know what is or isn’t from the Holy Spirit and wrongly call some action of being from the wrong party, that’s forgiven?

It seems if something is the ONLY unforgivable sin, it would be helpful to know exactly what one must avoid in modern day terms.

And I know this is probably not covered in scripture, but has it never struck anyone that you can blaspheme the Father and blaspheme Jesus and that can be forgiven but not the Holy Spirit? But all three are supposed to be one? So what’s up with that? Why does the Holy Spirit get extra rank here?

(sigh), I know I’m missing something theologically important, but somehow this particular subject gets tossed around and dissected over and over and I’m still left in the dark.

(Disclaimer: I do not wish to sound flippant, and when I converted to Catholicism, I just had a tiny, few loose ends like this same question. I’m willing to accept the entire CCC in its entirety and just sign-off on anything I still had questions about as just part of the deal and fodder for future meditation and instruction.)

The Pharisees heard Jesus teach. They saw miracle after miracle. Due to jealousy and the hardness of their hearts, they would not accept His teaching and were blind to the source of His power. To each of Jesus’ good works, which came from above, they, due to their blindness, could only imagine the power (Holy Spirit) as coming from below, as somehow being allied with evil - this in spite of the good fruits of healing that came from them. Also, since Jesus did good works on the Sabbath, which was an apparent violation of the Mosaic law, the Pharisees saw it as evil. They considered Jesus to be a lawbreaker - a criminal in their eyes. Thus, Jesus taught them that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Now, Jesus cast out through His own power as Son, but Jesus cannot be separated from the Holy Spirit, through which He was conceived in Mary’s womb.

Whether you are Catholic, and believe that the Holy Spirit proceeds from Jesus, or Orthodox and believe that the Spirit proceeds through Him - either way the Holy Spirit is contained within the person of Jesus Christ. Thus, in condemning the power of the Holy Spirit as being the power of the devil (“by the power of demons, he casts our demons”), they blasphemed the Holy Spirit. They were too blinded by their own sin to recognize God standing before them. They were too blind to know that they were condemning the power of God Himself, while conceitedly imagining that they had the monopoly on God, through their position in the Jewish faith and their enforcement of the Mosaic law.

Does any one think that the unpardonable sin could be denying the Real Presence?
Just a thought.

If, after realizing it, one then denies it, quite possibly, since the Holy Spirit is never separate from Jesus.
Just a reaction. 😉

Oh! I hope not. For the sake of the many loving and faithful Protestants out there.

But I have to admit, I “get” some of the historical references, but I’m still unclear on what the unpardonable sin would be in the modern world. Or is just an old sin that related only to that historical period?

There are a lot of iffy and objectionable religions out there, but I’ve yet to hear any accuse the miracles of Jesus as being satanic. Even the Satanist, as few and kooky as they are, don’t claim that.

I think the Real Presence might be the two edge sword. You either believe in the Real Presence or not. Those in John chapter 6 who said that it was a “hard saying” walked away from the Real Presence and in my opinion from Jesus himself. I believe that the Catholic Church is the true church and our separated brothers and sisters should return to the whole truth. Just my opinion.

I think the unpardonable sin is the same now as it was in biblical times.
