****(From another thread, where a response would have taken it too far off topic) As a review, the five “non-negotiable” Church teachings from the 2008 US election were against: Abortion, Euthanasia, Embryonic stem cell research, Homosexual “marriage” and Human cloning.
Thanks, but where does the Catholic Church (Magisterium) identify these issues and only these issues as “the five non-negotiables”?
It does not. Consider: murder is always against the teaching of the church. But, murder was not on the table during the 2008 election. The “five non-negotiables” were. Bear in mind that these five subjects applied specifically to the national election. They are by no means inclusive of Church teaching. Many many other topics were also involved (including war), but are most are subjects which require prudential judgment to be exercised, and are not, in and of themselves, intrinsic evils.
Especially as “embryonic stem cell research” is clearly NOT something the Church prohibits or teaches against across the board (it all depends on where the embryonic stem cells come from and how they’re obtained).
It appears that the Church does always teach against this destructive practice. A quote from the home page of the USCCB website:

"Bishops Urge Catholics to Contact Congress and NIH: Oppose Destructive Stem Cell Research

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) launched a new “Oppose Destructive Stem Cell Research” campaign today, equipping citizens to contact Congress and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to oppose embryonic stem cell research and support ethical cures and treatments “we can all live with.” The campaign is facilitated by the USCCB’s partner organization, the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment.

Following President Obama’s March 9 executive order, the NIH proposed guidelines for federally funded research that will require destroying live human embryos for their stem cells. The draft guidelines are open for public comment through May 26."**

Here is Catholic Answer’s Voters Guide for Serious Catholics that lists the 5 moral issues that no Catholic can support in voting for political candidates when alternative choices are available along with the references for the Catholic Teaching authority that underlines each topic area.

Here are some of the appropriate sections from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).
  1. Abortion - sections 2268-2283, 2321-2326
  2. Euthanasia - 2324
  3. Embryonic stem cell research - sections 2273-2274, 2323
  4. Homosexual “marriage” - sections 1659-1660, 1625-1632, 2333-2335
  5. Human cloning - section 2258
For dissident Catholics, please note that war and the death penalty may be justified under limited circumstances, while none of the five issues listed above can ever be justified.

As an individual, one either:
  1. Conforms their thinking to the Church
  2. Conforms the Church to their thinking
While this may not be an easy choice, it has both temporal and eternal implications for all.

I disagree. Murder most certainly was on the table during the 2008 elections. The murder of unborn children was on the table.

Hi, Holly! The Catechism deals with the two separately, in sections 2268 and 2269 for murder, then sections 2270-2272 for abortion. Both will earn eternal punishment, but are addressed separately, for reasons given within the CCC.
