Vatican newspaper: Biblical illiteracy can lead to easy manipulation

VATICAN CITY (CNS) – A lack of biblical literacy can make people,
even Catholics, more susceptible to believing the distortions and
falsifications in biblical texts published by the Brooklyn-based
Watch Tower Society, said an article in the Vatican newspaper.

While secularism “poses serious problems also for the preaching of
Jehovah’s Witnesses,” the article said, the religious illiteracy that
comes with secularism also can create fertile terrain for creating
new converts.

L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, published an article
called “Jehovah’s Witnesses: Just Incredible!” in its Oct. 29 weekly
edition in English. The article, written by author Valerio Polidori,
first appeared in the paper’s daily Italian edition July 25.

“Poor knowledge of the sacred texts favors the spread of garish and
awkward manipulations” of the Bible, it said.
 
I agree that people need to know their Bibles, but just knowing the Bible won’t mean that someone won’t join the JWs. Lots of JWs in fact know their Bibles. In fact, one could argue that people become JW *because *they read their Bibles.😃

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think anyone who has studied the Bible under the authority of the Church could ever buy what the JW’s are selling about Jesus, heaven, the soul etc. Not a chance. It is completly opposite. The JW beliefs can best be supported with their own translation which contains all the errors mentioned in the OP. It’s much more difficult to support their views using a standard Bible… one really has to twist and take things out of context.

Not to mention history… Christians who lived much closer to the time of Christ didn’t believe anything the JW’s teach…

And rightly so- it’s a cult. My fiancee teaches second grade, and a little boy in her class is a Jehovah’s Witness- he can’t participate in anything remotely utilizing holiday material (even snowflakes and penguins for pete’s sake). He told her the other day that people who celebrated holidays were bad.

Cult cult cult. Aren’t these the same people who refuse blood transfusions?

Yes, and can’t vote, don’t believe in higher education, celebrate ZERO holidays including birthdays and Mother’s Day (SO evil to celebrate your mom? :rolleyes: ) and publically shun those who disagree with the elders or commit a sin…

Totally a cult.

I would totally agree… and I’d add:
  1. You are told to stop associating with friends and family who are not “in” the group.
 
Arianism-a heresy dealt with by the Early Catholic Church.These people are following a heresy and the False Prophets of Brooklyn.And they HATE the Catholic Church.

So by this logic, are you considering Protestants to be heretics, or do a certain number need to apply, first?
 
The JW’s are not a cult in the same sense as Rev Moon’s org, or others, which used brain-washing techniques to entrap their members.

In fact, the word “cult,” is probably misused here, when speaking of the JW’s.

Either way, if one looks at the history of the JW’s, its an obviously flawed religion.

The Translation of their Bible was taken from English translation, mostly the Revised Standard Edition, and was translated to fit their doctrine.

My current understanding is that, they have no Scripture Scholars in their leadership, who have a knowledge of Greek and Hebrew. In fact, as early as the 80’s, everyone they sent to study Greek and Hebrew, and Theology, ended up leaving the religion, once they learned how flawed JW translation of Scripture was.

I don’t know what the numbers are, but it seems that there are a great number of JW’s, who were former Catholics. My opinion is that lack of Scripture Study in the Catholic Church, had much to do with it.

Well many of us did the same, whenever we saw them walking down the street going door to door.

I have a statue of the Blessed Mother mid-way up my driveway, where they can’t get to my door without passing it.

It seems to keep them away. 😃

As an ex JW myself, I can tell you that the JDubs
chuckle among themselves about all the people at home
who run and hide from them when they see them coming up their walkway toward their front door. They are aware of it, and they find it very funny. AND they find it a confirmation that they ARE the TRUE Church and that us demon-inspired Catholics have to run and hide from them behind our curtains because we (they say) have no valid answers to their arguments.

The JWs are definitely a cult. They are a cult that denies the divinity of Jesus and denies a person the right to celebrate holidays. This is not to mention the many people who have died because of the JWs teaching that blood transfusions are evil.

A friend of ours told us when JW or the Mormon boys were approaching the house, to hurry up and make a mixed drink (straight up-on the rocks)—then answer the door.

Worked every time! 😉
