Catholics teach that Mary, mother of Jesus, was born without original sin.

What does the Catholic church say about whether or not The Virgin Mary ever sinned during her lifetime?

Hi Ginger2,

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is here: catholic.com/library/Mary_Full_of_Grace.asp
The Fathers of the Church taught that Mary received a number of distinctive blessings in order to make her a more fitting mother for Christ and the prototypical Christian (follower of Christ). These blessings included her role as the New Eve (corresponding to Christ’s role as the New Adam), her Immaculate Conception, her spiritual motherhood of all Christians, and her Assumption into heaven. These gifts were given to her by God’s grace. She did not earn them, but she possessed them nonetheless.

The key to understanding all these graces is Mary’s role as the New Eve, which the Fathers proclaimed so forcefully. Because she is the New Eve, she, like the New Adam, was born immaculate, just as the First Adam and Eve were created immaculate. Because she is the New Eve, she is mother of the New Humanity (Christians), just as the first Eve was the mother of humanity. And, because she is the New Eve, she shares the fate of the New Adam. Whereas the First Adam and Eve died and went to dust, the New Adam and Eve were lifted up physically into heaven.

Of particular interest in the following quotations from the Fathers are those that speak of Mary’s immaculate nature. We will all one day be rendered immaculate (sinless), but Mary, as the prototypical Christian, received this grace early. God granted her freedom from sin to make her a fitting mother for his Son.

Even before the terms “original sin” and “immaculate conception” had been defined, early passages imply the doctrines. Many works mention that Mary gave birth to Jesus without pain. But pain in childbearing is part of the penalty of original sin (Gen. 3:16). Thus, Mary could not have been under that penalty. By God’s grace, she was immaculate in anticipation of her Son’s redemptive death on the cross. The Church therefore describes Mary as “the most excellent fruit of redemption” (CCC 508).

My thinking has been that there is no Biblical evidence that indicts her, so the teaching of the Church is logical.

No, she did not.

If she had, it would have been a global disaster on the same level as the sin of Adam and Eve, (or perhaps even greater, since she knew the consequences that Adam and Eve had experienced) since she was born into the same life of grace that they were born into.

Quote jm crae : If she had, it would have been a global disaster …

WHY?

How would Mary’s having committed a minor sin effect Jesus’ mission? My salvation?

Hi

I think that Mary was the mother of Jesus. Mary was so pious that GodAllahYHWH talked to her before the birth of Jesus, that shows she was without sins, like mother of Moses with whom GodAllahYHWH also talked.

I think Catholic, church do not have full account of her life. She spent quite a big portion of her life in India before her death there, she is said to be buried in Murree near Islamabad, Pakistan.

Thanks

Because the Bible doesn’t specifically mention that Mary sinned is not a valid argument. There are lots of people in the Bible who are not specifically named as sinful.

Also, God speaking directly to her thru an Angel is not proof of sinlessness. God spoke to Moses and he definitely sinned!

But my question isn’t really about that. I want to know what difference it makes whether or not she ever sinned. How do you think that would have effected Jesus and his purpose concerning our salvation?

But what difference does it make?

If she had sinned would her sin have nullified the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross?

Would Jesus have ascended into heaven without dying for our sins?

Would our hope be taken away?

I am not asking why you believe she was sinless. I am asking what difference it makes?

In Heaven there is one truth, and the truth that Jesus Christ wants us to know, through the Holy Spirit by the Church, that Mary was sinless.

I think you know the answer to that. Hypothetical situation, you might as well ask what if Jesus stopped loving you.

The way of the Christian is to accept truth, and try to understand it. There is a very good reason why Luke compared the BLESSED Virgin Mary to the Ark of the Covenant, find out why. You want help? Look to the Church, the spouse of Christ.

She probably wouldn’t have been chosen to carry our Lord. Just a guess.

You’re asking to know the mind of God here, I hope you understand. A Da Vinci Code reader could ask you, how would Jesus’ having married and had children affect Jesus’ mission? My salvation? And you would not be able to provide an absolute answer, only speculation.

So now that we understand that there are truths of the faith which we cannot give the reasons for (since we do not know perfectly the mind of God), we can proceed.

Jesus, God Incarnate, is the perfect union of God and Man. To be a perfect union, He must unite perfect Divine nature (not a problem, God is always and everywhere perfect) with perfect human nature. OK, now we’ve got problems. If Jesus truly takes his human nature from us, from his mother, then that human nature must also be perfect, or else God Incarnate is not perfect (and we know he is). Otherwise it is just a sham to say that Jesus took his human nature from his mother, because his (perfect) human nature would not really have been her nature.

So the answer to your question is, if Mary had sinned it would have affected the very nature of the Incarnation. Not a good thing!

Say it again and again: It’s all about the Incarnation.

It seems that the IC is a part of the RCC Gospel, and that belief in it is necessary for salvation.

Pope Pius IX warned:"Hence, if anyone shall dare—which God forbid!—to think otherwise than as has been defined by us, let him know and understand that he is condemned by his own judgment; that he has suffered shipwreck in the faith; that he has separated from the unity of the Church; and that, furthermore, by his own action he incurs the penalties established by law if he should express in words or writing or by any other outward means the errors he thinks in his heart" (Ineffabilis Deus).Even to think otherwise is to suffer “shipwreck in the faith;” if Paul’s mention of “disqualification” in 1 Cor 9, is to Catholics a loss of salvation, then “shipwreck in the faith,” should be considered loss of salvation as well.

I don’t see where the OP is asking about the Immaculate Conception here, but about personal sin committed by Mary.

Mike, certainly you believe that Mary never committed a sin, don’t you?

I believe that the idea of Mary as being free from personal sin is inherent in the IC dogma.

Others can answer as to what the Church says, or doesn’t.

Jesus is often referred to as the New Adam, He had no sin.

So…Mark 2:22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the wine will burst the bottles, and both the wine will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottles.

And this is an explanation I heard once, taken from Mark…Adam and Eve sinned…Only Jesus the New Wine could save us, but you can’t put Jesus (new wine) into an unclean vessel, an old bottle. (Eve)

Therefore Mary had to be unblemished by any sin, to receive the New Wine…Jesus.

No it’s not. Adam and Eve were also free of original sin and yet they committed personal sin. I think introducing the Immaculate Conception into this thread is just confusing the OP’s question.
