I’m the chair of my Parish’s finance committee. If you want us to turn the AC way down, please bring a big enough check to pay for it with you every Saturday Vigil/Sunday.:rolleyes: 😛
 
To what extent does culture determine what is appropriate? For example, I once read a story about a woman who went to Mass prior to Vatican II, and she was in a sleeveless dress. The story was that she knelt at the communion rail, and the priest came over to her, didn’t give her communion and whispered into her ear: “next time wear sleeves”. I can imagine that there was a time when that was scandalous. On the other hand, if a woman showed up at my church in a garment without sleeves, I wouldn’t notice. So what is it that makes clothing appropriate or inappropriate outside of some common things we might be able to agree upon, such as speedos and bikinis?

Again I ask, what is wrong with Speedos and bikinis at Mass?

If you don’t see a problem with Speedos and bikinis at Mass, where do you draw the line?

For me, personally, speedos and bikinis could be a distraction (either a temptation or a revulsion, depending on the circumstances. I am not sure where one draws the line, but where one does draw the line is probably culturally based. At one point in our society, many people had the idea that women wearing pants was scandalous. I remember a woman saying that at her secular university (sometime in the 40’s or 50’s), some professors would tell the female students that they are not to wear pants in their classes. So at one point pants are scandalous, now they are not. So where do we draw the line, good question.
 
Lepanto, your response to me was a bit unkind, given that I specifically said that NOT everything goes.

But yes: I’d rather have you in a bikini or speedos than than smacking your bubblegum, elbowing your brother, talking loudly about how drunk you were the night before.

Because I can close my eyes, but not my ears.

Again: modesty codes tend to focus on sqaure inches of coverage, which is only a small part of the equation of appropriate dress.

The men men who dress as nuns and attend Mass in San Francisco were modest, but utterly inappropriate.
