As a theologian he surely lacks knowledge on natural law

Excellent! I thought I remembered reading Bishop Braxton was pretty liberal so this surprises me. Perhaps I’m mistaken. Anybody know anything about him? It’s not a name you hear often.

I applaud him for taking this stand! Way to go! 👍

I met him at my daughters Confimation last May. He is a stckler for details and they say He’s quite an intellectual. He seemed nice enough.

Bishop Braxton’s decision has apparently ruffled a few feathers.
Steven Sanders, a Carbondale insurance brokerage owner and member of the center’s pastoral council that invited Johnson, said of Braxton, “I think he’s stepping in where it’s none of his damn business. These kids are college kids. They should be able to hear all sides.”

The article also mentions that Luke Timothy Johnson has accepted an invitation to lecture at Loyola University of Chicago. I guess that will take place since it is scheduled to occur a week from now.

The topic, however, will be “Creation and Care of the Earth”, so perhaps this is a safe topic for Prof. Johnson.

I think LT Johnson is one of the most respected biblical scholars right now, even by the more conservative theologians. I remember Scot Hahn telling me how good he thought LT Johnsons commentary on Luke/Acts was. Granted he is liberal on a few issues as mentioned above. I think on some things he would be a great speaker to have. It is the bishops decision how to handle things so no one can say “he is sticking his head where it doesn’t belong.” He is the one who is responsible for the teaching in the diocese.
