Life in the Spirit - Apostle Paul
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Justified by Faith**

By Faith, or by Works of the Law?
3:1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by [3] the flesh? 4 Did you suffer [4] so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” [6] 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit [7] through faith.
The Law and the Promise
15 To give a human example, brothers: [8] even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. 17 This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise.
19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave [9] nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Nothing here overrides Paul’s words that follow. You can’t just read up to this point then ignore the rest of Galatians.
Faith is a gift of grace that can help us follow God’s will.
If we turn our will away from God after receiving this gift, there will be consequences.

I don’t believe in the sovereignity of man in salvation since it is not taught in the Scriptures. Man is not captain of his eternal fate. For, if each person determined his own eternal destiny, then Heaven would have no redeemed sinners in it. We would also suffer to same fate as the non-elect Angels if God did not save a people for Himself… chosen by grace. Thank God that He has His elect Angels and elect adopted children to the praise of His saving and transforming grace!
Romans 11
I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. The origin of evil is a mystery unless you want to give me your beliefs on the origin of evil. We already had Satan in the garden during the fall of mankind. So, why did Lucifier fall if God created him? God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all; therefore, God is not the author of evil.

“If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.” (Hebrews 10:26)
Yes, the Word is a sharp double-edged sword. You can slay our enemies with it, but you can also slay yourself with it. And that’s just one of the reasons that God gave us His Church - to infallibly interpret the infallible Word of God, so that we don’t slay ourselves with our personal interpretations.

I don’t understand, - in order to have forgiveness of sins, SHOULDN’T we think about sin and what constitutes sin? if we ignore the topic, how will this help us? it’s so important for Christians to overcome sin (by grace, of course)… it’s not just about being forgiven…it’s about not wanting to sin in that way again, not wanting to offend God anymore. It shows love for God when we want to please Him in all we do.Why is it that every other thread throughout the Catholic forums is titled something like,
“Is XYZ a sin?” or “Is ABC a mortal or venial sin?” or “Would it be sinful if I XYZ?”
The responses then attempt to parse out what various church fathers think about it, what different councils think, what Scripture teaches, etc, to determine the extent of an action’s sinfulness and the eternal implications thereof.
But I ask: Where is the Gospel? Where is the forgiveness of sins? Where is the comfort that our Lord Jesus provides to the conscience of the repentant sinner who believes in Him?
Please, when responding to these threads, remember that WHATEVER sin the poster is discussing, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, died for it. And please remind the poster of that. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t be terrified on account of our sins, but as we learn in Homiletics class, the Gospel MUST predominate. Chances are, if a sinner is asking about their sin at all, they’re probably penitent. If they weren’t, and they didn’t care, they wouldn’t bother asking. Such threads can provide an excellent opportunity to remind (or inform) the poster of the forgiveness of sins granted to us by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
As Martin Luther (I know how much Catholics love him!) said:
“This one and firm rock, which we call the doctrine of justification…is the chief article of the whole Christian doctrine, which comprehends the understanding of all godliness…this doctrine is the articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae …if this article stands, the Church stands; if it falls, the Church falls.”

It always puzzles me how some Protestants think that Catholics don’t know about God’s forgiveness… or at least, don’t think about God’s forgiveness…
we think about sin so that we can repent and confess sin, and thus obtain God’s forgiveness… every time we go to Confession, we come out with cleansed souls…

The law is something we should remind ourselves of often to remember that we cannot fulfill it. The Gospel, the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ, is what we should turn to after the law convicts us. That’s the pattern a Christian should keep to his whole life.
The issue Catholics take to that, one I share, is that while Christ’s commandments, Paul’s admonitions not to sin, etc., undoubtedly help us by driving us back to the Gospel, they are also…well, things we are actually expected to do. We actually have to try to do them. Law-Gospel reductions don’t have much room for that.

Another point that should be made here is that we live in “terrible times”, where society no longer recognizes sin; where Catholics, and Christians in general, have been poorly catechized; and where many parents don’t teach their children right from wrong, often times because they don’t know right from wrong themselves. These are some of the reasons that there are so many questions about what is sin, and what sins are mortal or venial. It is a good thing that people ask these questions, and it is a good thing when they receive the correct answers. And I for one don’t see a shortage of help here telling people the good news that our God’s mercy is infinite, and that He always forgives the repentant sinner, through the grace merited by our Lord Jesus Christ.
