You seem to be describing the RCC formula for salvation with the “you never really know…so you just hope”.
Actually, I am one Catholic who believes in a form of “eternal security” - just not the usual idea of it…

I believe we can be eternally secure with God (in knowing that we are going to at least make it to Heaven via Purgatory)… as long as we are committed to Him and His ways… doing everything Jesus said… adhering always to Truth - tenaciously…
…which is not as easy as it may sound…

You, on the other hand, prefer to have some other fallible man or group of men do the work of making you “sure” that you are on the correct path to salvation.
I thought you said we in the RCC are never “sure”??
I do not trust men and their traditions.
neither do i… I trust the Holy Church that Christ Himself established - not ones created by men (M. Luther, Calvin, James Wright 😃 … )
was a group of religious leaders with their long history of “traditions” that told their followers to yell “Crucify Him!”
Catholics don’t follow human traditions either… they follow divine traditions, traditions God wants us to follow… Jesus only condemned man-made, not ALL tradition…
And i agree that religious leaders cannot be trusted… If one is close to Christ, one will not be fooled by the false religious leaders when they go astray… as they sometimes do…
When those followers stand before God at Judgement Day, they will not be able to use the weak excuse that their leaders told them to yell those words.
True… and that is probably why Jesus said (St. Matthew 7:23) that even those who do mighty deeds in his name will be rejected… why he said that many will not make it, that they will not be “strong enough” (St. Luke 13:24??).

By the way, that is another Scripture that would dispute OSAS since most americans call themselves “Christian” … many call themselves “born again”… Yet the Bible does not say that being “born-again” is the only thing one has to do to gain Heaven…" The bible says it is difficult to get into Heaven… you can’t just “believe” as the demons do (James 2). Many “christians” get abortions… many lie… many do this or that… When Mary has appeared, she has said (Fatima) that many people go to Hell… Most go to Purgatory (b4 Heaven) and very few go directly into Heaven…
How is this for a definitive concrete answer to the question of your salvation? :

Peter boldly said:
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Jesus Christ
So what Catholic is going to (or has) disputed this?? I’ve never once heard any Catholic argue w/ that… (in all my life…)
The RCC says that they are another name that must be included in that formula for salvation, which “definitely” contradicts what Peter said, no matter how anyone tries to play around with God’s Word.
The RCC says no such thing. It teaches that only through Christ can one enter Heaven… (although those who don’t know about Christ can get into Heaven through indirectly knowing Christ, meaning by following their consciences… by following truth…). The Church does not teach you have to be Catholic to be saved… (although it definitely helps… Jesus knew what he was doing when He “built His Church” [St. Matthew 16:18…].)
The RCC does teach that if you end up saved, it was through Christ’s church (which She is)… whether directly, indirectly, or whatever…

ryanoneil;3686862:
I don’t see how anyone could believe in OSAS after honestly reading Revelation chapter 2
Or st. Matthew 25:31-46… or St. Matthew 18:23 or James 2… or St. Matthew 7:23 or St. Mark 10:17

I like the verse where the Lord Jesus gives us permission to: test “…them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars.” Rev.2:2

The RCC says that anyone who dares to do that is condemned.

I see no “eternal securirty” in your unusual idea of it.

Your “which is not as easy as it may sound…” confirms the lack of security you must feel.

“as long as” , “I believe”, “in knowing that we are going to at least” , “doing EVERYTHING Jesus said” …This is not the wording of a “secure” faith.

I think you must be getting frustrated on this thread, brkn1, because it seems like you are making unfounded and slanderous statements. What is your goal in doing that? Now that you have made this assertion, you are obligated to show in the Church Teachings where this is taught.

This may come as a surprise to you, but the Apostolic faith is not so much about having security for ourselves as it is about following Christ. In fact, many times following God tenaciously puts on in many insecure conditions. But our security is with Him, who is seated at the right hand of God, and our citizenship is there. It is not necessary for us to have security now, since we know we will have it eternally. Indeed, for His sake, “we are being killed all day long”!

When understood in the proper context.

Actually it’s John 10 not 11  at amatuers.
This is from Post #550 from our professional.

<Ver.28. “They shall not perish for ever: and no man shall snatch them out of my hand.”-----------He speaks of his ELECT, of those whom he called by SPECIAL PROVIDENCE and mercy, whom he blessed with MORE than ordinary graces, and with the GIFT OF FINAL PERSEVERANCE to the end in his GRACE. (Witham)>

This is being used as an argument “against” the idea of OSAS!!!

SOOOOO…Am I now suposed to understand that OSAS DOES apply to SOME, according to the RCC?
I think you are trying to confuse me.

Council of Trent

“If any one shall say, that the ungodly man is justified by faith only so as to understand that nothing else is required that may co-operate to obtain the grace of justification, and, that it is in no wise necessary for him to be prepared and disposed by the motion of his (own) will,-----let him be accursed.” Canon 9.

“If any one shall say, that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in the Divine mercy pardonning sins for Christ’s sake; or that it is that confidence alone by which we are justified,----let him be accursed.” Canon 12.

These Canons, alone, by the RCC condemn me for questioning the interpretation that the RCC claims to be the only interpretation allowed. Such “condemnation” does not bother me though, since I hold to what is written by the Holy Spirit in God’s Word as having the final say and rule in our salvation. It clearly does not allow any person or church to condemn me for testing their interpretation against Scripture. The RCC interpretations and claims do not hold up to Scripture.

The whole sheep thing is rhetorical.

We can take a look at a real shepherd and real sheep and examine the what reality is.

The sheep know the voice of the shepherd. That is true. But the ability to hear the voice is relative. If the Sheep becomes deaf or is deaf then the sheep cannot hear the voice. Sometimes the Sheep are at play and are so involved in something else, that they don’t hear the voice. Some sheep even wander off so far that they can’t hear the voice at all.

Some sheep in the flock are picked for breeding to progate the betterment of the species - analogy to this is that the Elect are those God has chosen for vocations (Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;) and other sheep those that are justified but not the elect. Those Elect are far and few. We the other sheep are many.

The Shepherd will anguish over the loss of a sheep. Sometimes it is not prudent to go after the lost sheep immediately because the whole flock may be put in danger. The Shepherd after the flock has been corraled or given over to the care of another Sheperd, may go find the lost sheep. If it is found, it is a great Joy. If not, it is a great sorrow.

Only when you can understand the nature of the shepherd and the nature of the sheep, can you then understand the rhetoric of the shepherd and the sheep in scripture.

Hope this helps?:tiphat:

Broken 1, If you have access to a catechism pick up one and see what it states about salvation and start a thread with each point that you may disagree with.

How are those sins expiated? Does one just say, sorry God and go on, trying to do better? Only the most cleansed soul will be joined with God when we die.
that’s the problem that is blind to the OSAS believer. there is no incentive to try to do better. one OSAS person may try, the other not at all. they can keep abusing everyone without any remorse, as long as they remember a scripture verse or two, that will be their excuse when they meet God. there is no need for any degree of repentance of penance - no need to make up for the person you hurt, it’s up to you. for someone comparing religions for beneficial purposes, this notion of salvation just fails miserably.

The Church is the only thing that prevents a sin from being a secret.

The Church is the only thing that frees a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age.

There are incentives for the OSAS believer to ‘do better’:
  1. Gaining of eternal rewards
  2. Avoiding temporal punishment

The Church is correctly denouncing justification by faith alone, which is not scriptural.

James 2
17
So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18
Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
19
You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble.
20
Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?
21
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
22
You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works.
23
Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called “the friend of God.”
24
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

There is countless other Scripture that disproves justification by faith alone. The same is true of OSAS.

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

weak. temporal punishment is just that, temporary. no one cares about temporary, they care about forever.

the thief could care less about jail time and punishment, they just keep doing it because they know they will get out eventually. what they do care about is that third strike for life.

billy doesn’t care about a slap on the wrist, he cares if you completely take away his bike or videogame. OSAS says they will never be taken away, but billy, you should try to be good anyways.

God didn’t mess around with the Israelites or her enemies. God didn’t mess around with Moses, either. He didn’t enter the promised land. He knew God personally, he spoke to Him, he followed all that He asked, but at the last moment, BAM, sorry kid, you stay behind, i told you so.

Another View of Faith and Works in James 2

Loss of eternal rewards is not temporary. Also, remember Moses was Saved in the end, so his ‘permanent’ punishment was not eternally permanent (he even ends up in the Promised Land…read the story of the Transfiguration again, he is standing with Jesus on the mountain). Also, the thief who is given life imprisonment (or even the death penalty) has not received an eternal punishment, you just agreed that it motivates not to to wrong. Both Moses’ and that hypothetical thief’s punishments are temporal in nature. And, obviously, the kid who loses the use of video games or something is suffering a temporal punishment.

Thus, all the examples you have used to show the ineffectiveness of temporal punishments, are actually examples of effective temporal punishments.

I did find this explanation helpful, but it does present a few Scriptural problems:

First would be about the Shepherd deciding not to find a lost sheep out of prudence in protecting the rest of the flock.
Jesus said, “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he lose ONE of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go afte that which is lost, until he find it?”.

The second point about your post that I found very interesting, is the part about the Elect that God chooses being “far and few”.

One of the Elect vocations mentioned is teachers, which does not seem to be a rare vocation from reading (Hebrews 5:12):
“For when for the time when ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the oracles of God;…”

It seems that any good church would produce many teachers by this qualification that Paul proposes here. Those seeking the strong meat of God’s Word can become teachers by their diligence. They certainly should not be few and rare by the standard described here. Paul seemed disappointed at the number, but that must mean that he was used to many becoming teachers in the good churches.

I understand the RCC position on denouncing faith alone, although I disagree with it.

What my posting the Council of Trent’s Canon9 and Canon12 had to do with, was the idea that those Canons do not allow me to question the RCC’s claim to be the apostlic successors as the Lord Jesus gave us permission to “try them which say they are apostles,…”, which would have be measured against and must show to be according to God’s Word.
The RCC says I must accept their claim on blind faith, without such testing against Scripture, or I am anathema (accursed).

The heretical teaching, condemned by the Church, OSAS leads countless souls to hell as many think they are just in God’s sight and die not knowing they need to make their peace with Him first through confessing their sins. Let us stand firm and hold fast to the traditions we have received from the pillar and foundation of truth, the Church.

Pope St. Pius X. Acerbo Nimis. 1905: “Our Predecessor, Benedict XIV, had just cause to write: “We declare that a great number of those who are condemned to eternal punishment suffer that everlasting calamity because of ignorance of those mysteries of faith which must be known and believed in order to be numbered among the elect.” vatican.va/holy_father/pius_x/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-x_enc_15041905_acerbo-nimis_en.html

Yes, the Church teaches that OSAS does apply to some. She also teaches that we are not to presume that we are included in the “some”, so we are to focus on persevering to the end, and not presume upon the grace of God that this perseverance is not necessary.

Also, the Catholic Church teaches that all who have left this world in a state of grace are OSAS, and will be united with their heavenly inheritance. Those He justified, he also glorified. 😉

We are to focus on remaining in a state of grace, and not focus on our eternal security.
