The name is offensive to many Hispanics who have endured the bad aspects of colonialism. I would rather change the name if it will bring others on board as Catholic brothers.
Thanks, I knew that part-that some people find his name offensive, but I didn’t know why the group was named after him. Makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Okay, I’m sorry my question is so ignorant, but why are they called Knights of Columbus? What does he have to do with it? I mean no offense!
Columbus was a hero to many American Catholics and the naming him as patron was partly an attempt to bridge the division between the Irish-Catholic founders of the Order and Catholic immigrants of other nationalities living in Connecticut.

The Connecticut Catholic ran an editorial in 1878 that illustrated the esteem in which American Catholics held Columbus. “As American Catholics we do not know of anyone who more deserves our grateful remembrance than the great and noble man - the pious, zealous, faithful Catholic, the enterprising navigator, and the large-hearted and generous sailor: Christopher Columbus.”

The name of Columbus was also partially intended as a mild rebuke to Anglo-Saxon Protestant leaders, who upheld the explorer (a Catholic [Genovese] Italian working for Catholic [Spain] as an American hero, yet simultaneously sought to marginalize recent Catholic immigrants. In taking Columbus as their patron, they were sending the message that not only could Catholics be full members of American society, but were, in fact, instrumental in its foundation.

If the name changes, I will resign from KofC. All the political correctness and liberalism is a cancer that needs to be eradicated. Catholicism and liberalism cannot coexist.

It is only offensive to the easily offended. I doubt the the citizens of Columbia feel offended by the name of their country, nor do the residents of Colon, Panama.

For me it would depend on the reason. If it changes because of social pressure, then we’re done for as an organization anyway. But, if there is a well thought out decision to change the name to recognize Fr. McGivney when he is canonized, that’s another story.

They won’t stop with Columbus. In the future they will be tearing down statues of Rev Martin Luther King, for violation of whatever PC standards exist then.

Notice that Margaret Sanger’s bust is still undisturbed on the National Gallery; a well documented White Supremacist.

Only to Hispanics who do not remember the Cristiada.

It’s a done deal. It’s just a matter of when. The statue breaking does not cause persecution it’s a symptom of what’s to come.
The Catholic Church will be persecuted for standing with marriage, freedom of religious expression, and common sense as classically defined.

The K of C is likely the largest Catholic lay organization in the world. most members, all men, live in the US but it’s also in Canada Philippines, Poland, Ukraine, and elsewhere.

It was founded in the late 1800s by Fr. McGivney and is named after Columbus. Statues of the namesake are now controversial. But Columbus is “only” a namesake. They don’t pattern especially after his spirituality, as Francis or Dominicans “follow” their founder. McGivney is far more important.

It’s a bulwark of the prolife movement.

I’m not aware of any K of C that have their own statue of Columbus.

Fr. McGivney is about to be beatified, so the organization isn’t going away.

If it gets bad enough they can change their name.

They are a Catholic men’s fraternal and service organization. They were named affer Columbus in the 1800s when the US population generally considered him an admirable figure.

Statues of Columbus aren’t important and I have never seen a council of K of C that had one.

I am a K of C member and my council has a bust of Columbus, I’m pretty sure.

You keep forgetting the most important thing we white devils have ever appropriated from other cultures:

CHOCOLATE
