They just can't be right! (After all, they're Catholics aren't they?)

Wow, this stuff is really true in my life as well. I remember almost 2 years ago, right after I had read Scott Hahn’s book about the mass, reading through the book of John and wondering “Wow! How did I ever miss this stuff!! This is incredible.” And you know, I had been one of those know-it-all Bible buffs back in my evangelical days… I could beat all my friends at Bible trivia. 😉 Yet, SOMEHOW, I’d managed to never stop and ponder the passages about Christ’s Body and Blood… and also my pastors had all managed to not have to go there in their sermons or they’d just skimmed over it. Crazy.

And now that I see it- now that you guys see it too- do you ever wonder how you didn’t see it and why? Was it just b/c we were never exposed to it, that it wasn’t pointed out to us? Or were we just blinded and even if a well-meaning Catholic had drawn those verses to our attention we would have rejected it? I’m probably a combination of those two. I spent the first 20 years of my life being EXTREMELY anti-catholic. In fact, when I was a teen I remember driving home from my evangelical church and seeing all of the “pagans” (my words!) coming out of mass at the local Catholic Church.

It’s cool to know that even though we were rebellious in the past, Christ kept knocking on that door asking for us to open it. Now I don’t know what I would do without the Truth I’ve found in the Catholic Church. I can’t wait to join it!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I was raised in a prot, very anti-Catholic home. Never let an opportunity go by to slam the Catholics; that was the attitude in my home. BUT, even though…what happened was that I developed a curiosity about the Catholics that may not have risen had I not heard all the “slams” throughout my childhood. The “word” at my house was mackerel snappers; like your pagans.
Who knows,I believe everything happens for a reason…My curiosity of The Church became a devouring interest in my later life. And here I am. A practicing, believing, Mass attending, Rosary telling, Roman Catholic!
I bet my deceased family went into shock over it - if there is shock in the afterlife. (I doubt that! 😃 ) Considering where I hope they all are, they’re probably celebrating.

I actually have to thank many of those who told me things that the Catholic Church practiced. Although a baptized Catholic as an infant, my parents left the Church when I was 4. When God started speaking to me, I first went to the church where friends invited me. As far as I knew Catholic was just another denomination.

When people found out I was a baptized Catholic, I suddenly was being educated on Catholic teachings. You know, worship of Mary, don’t believe they are saints, etc. It was through their words they that I started to research what Catholics really believe.

So thanks to all who spouted their misconceptions to me. If not for you, I may not have “found” Christ in the Catholic Church as quickly!

God Bless,
Maria

I’m with you. It was those very accusations which caused me to look more deeply and study the Faith. If it had not been for those accusations, which invariably proved false, I would not have the strength of Faith that I do today.

I really have to agree with you on this Steph. I was the same way and now, I can’t see how one can NOT see it.

Hello thread with catchy title and some key Scripture references. Bumpety!

Am I the only one who feels like the non-Catholic churches that we were part of sort of “read around” or don’t touch on passages of the Bible that pretty clearly show that Catholic belief and practice are correct?
Either that, or just leave those books out of the Bible altogether. 😉

I don’t understand, if someone’s faith is based on a word-for-word literal interpretation of the Bible, doesn’t it make sense to include all the words?
One of my favorites is to hear Matthew 23:9 described as “you should call no man Father except your male biological parent; it’s OK to call him Father” – that verse doesn’t actually mention “biological parents”, does it? 😉

There are so many frustrating aspects of dealing with some of the a-Cs I meet… In general I just let it go after I present my case. It takes the pressure off and allows me not to sweat their opinions. Truth is truth…getting that through someone else’s skull is the work of the Holy Spirit. not mine. My job is faithfulness and prayer after I have sown what seed I can.
Pax vobiscum,

So CM,
It looks like the recent flood of Prots on these forums reminded you of this thread.

I have had the same questions about “literal interpretaions” myself. What I do is whenever I hear someone use those words to describe their position I quickly cite the passages where Jesus says, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off…” That usually is a shocker to them, of course you have to reassure them that that is not a literal command.

thank you, Michael. I am new to the forum and just learning how to lovingly answer fundamentalists who tell me I am a Pawn of Satan. You have helped me.

There is a big difference between being deceived into things like Mary worship, bowing down to idols(eucharist), and hoping your works will merit eternal life and being born of satan.

What is needed is to return to the true Christ, the one risen at the right hand of the Father, without any grace passing through Mary(she’s not God).

Anyone that tells you are a spawn of satan is not practicing what the Bible teaches and is only using the “sword of the spirit” to beat up on you, instead of loving you like Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it.

And I suppose that you oppose the things you cite in your first paragraph? Which indicates that you have zero understanding of Catholic teachings on the beliefs that you mention, but I guess you just couldn’t wait to get in here and bash the Catholic Church and so have not read any of the clear articles on the CA home page library. The fact that you make the statements that you have displays that you are sorely ignorant of the truth.

You tell us that you are “Bible based”? I can’t tell…since the things that you just decried are more Biblical than the things that you base your beliefs upon, namely Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide. Both are new winds of doctrine that only began to blow in 1517.

Don’t assume that none of us have come out from among you, since I myself wasted over 34 years with n-C churches and it was an attack like the one you just made (Mary worship) that caused me to dig deeply into what the Catholic Church really teaches and to reject the incomplete and erroneous doctrines of Protestantism and all it’s many many thousands of doctrinal variants.

I suggest that you practice something that that Bible there beside you says: 2nd Timothy 2:15 Carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Then go and learn what this means when St. Paul says:
1 Timothy 3 :15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Pax tecum,

Nobody here worships Mary and the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ is no idol. You might do better here if you start by learning what the Catholic Church really teaches. You are seriously misinformed.

Your brother in Christ.

Where in the Holy Bible is this?

Also, where in the Holy Bible does it say: “Only the Bible”?

How does one get a Holy Bible if one says: “Only the Bible”?

Which is where about 99% of all anti-Catholic bias really comes from. (IMO) And this is my own premiss in my IP. Far too many non-Catholics condemn Catholics and our teachings without ever bothering to read or hear what we really believe, as opposed to reading or hearing something about Catholicism by a non-Catholic source. :yup:
