Honestly that Sandro Magister who leaked this letter from some unknown inside source, (probably a typist or a janitor since it was a draft copy)… needs to be booted from the Vatican press circle permanently. He was the one who leaked the draft copy of the Encyclical on the environment prior to it’s official release and was suspended indefinitely and publically chastised for it. 🤷
I think he already is restricted indefinately

That’s complicated reading. I could barely follow what the article is trying to say.

Yes I read that his credentials were suspended in June when he leaked the draft of Laudato Si prior to its official release, but he is obviously still getting leaked information from somewhere. It’s absolutely infuriating that these journalists who claim to be orthodox Catholics can pick and choose their ethics according to their own strange standards. It is they that are stirring the pot and causing dissension among naive Catholics and for what? To disrupt the synod? Discredit Pope Francis? I have zero respect for that type.

New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan has acknowledged that he was one of a group of cardinals who sent a confidential letter to Pope Francis expressing concerns about the Synod …

So, the letter was not a hoax.

According to Cardinal Dolan, they signed it.

And the Holy Father addressed their concerns at the Synod. If the Holy Father addressed their concerns, he in fact received a letter from the 13 Cardinals. Here is a bit from the link above:

Catholic World News - October 13, 2015

"New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan has acknowledged that he was one of a group of cardinals who sent a confidential letter to Pope Francis expressing concerns about the Synod process.

In an interview with Sirius Radio, Cardinal Dolan said that he joined the effort at the instigation of Cardinal George Pell. He observed that Pope Francis had encouraged the Synod fathers to express their opinions honestly, and the cardinals’ letter was sent in that spirit."

+PAX:)

Not a hoax, just the wrong list of cardinals who signed it and apparently it was sent before the Synod started and the Holy Father addressed the concerns (at least for Dolan)

Yes, the letter appears to have been sent before the Synod started, which is not to say that I don’t think a number of cardinals do have concerns about the Synod process as we speak.

So this goes back to who released this and why. Yesterday I thought it was a good thing, now I see that the intent was apparently to harm the reputations of the cardinals by painting them as contentious, or at least that argument is out there.

It was leaked by the traditionalist journalist (I use the latter term lightly) Sandro Magister who writes for the ultra conservative site, Chiesa espresso. It was not meant to discredit the Cardinals, but more to undermine the synod and stir up renewed anger in the hoi poloi.

Oh, well, that’s all right then. 😃 (…joke)

Cardinal Mueller is not happy about it though - he is conservative. He didn’t want the press. So something is fishy here.

No, I don’t imagine that any of the Cardinals or Bishops would be happy about it regardless of their leanings. This is very much the work of the ‘law unto themselves’ mafiosi journalists.

Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City has denied a report in the Jesuit periodical America that he signed a letter to Pope Francis expressing serious concerns about the Synod of …

Update from Sandro Magister on the controversial letter allegedly signed by 13 cardinals. In brief, he is now saying:
His original published text contained only minor inaccuracies. His text was incorrect “in form,” he concedes, though correct “in substance.”
There were errors, too, in the list of signatories. Magister’s new post includes a revised list numbering eleven names: nine of the original thirteen plus two new ones, John Njue, archbishop of Nairobi, Kenya, and Daniel N. Di Nardo, archbishop of Galveston-Houston and vice-president of the episcopal conference of the United States.

Well, someone on the inside is happy about it because someone gave it to Magister. Not necessarily one of the Cardinals, but it must have been someone well placed.

This does sound like quite a mess. I think the truth will out ultimately when the Synod ends - the final report and what it produces down the road. Does it reflect the opinions of the majority of cardinals. We’ll know all that soon enough as far as I am concerned.

But considering that it was not the genuine letter but some sort of draft that one of the Cardinals said wasn’t the letter he signed… and the random list of names wasn’t even close to accurate… you’d have to summise that it came from someone who was far removed from the final product. Maybe the cleaning lady who fished a screwed up copy of something out of the bin.

As a postscript to this thread I believe the theme can safely be stamped*** UNETHICAL JOURNALISM *** and put to bed.

I am with you on putting the thread to bed, but the fact remains that someone is leaking things - drafts of documents. I won’t speculate further.

I think that is wishful thinking. Magister has long had very highly placed sources. He doesn’t get his stuff from the cleaning lady.

It didn’t take long for several to retract their names from this letter.
