This happened during mass and I was upset

The Pastor yes, That’s appropriate. The Bishop or the Chancery offices? NO.

And although such behaviour would probably perturb me (I tend to prefer quiet contemplation) on a plus side it seems as if the guy who shouted out seemed to be expressing a conversion where he now believes Christ is truly present in the Eucharist. That in itself is a good thing, even if it disturbed others. How many people come to Mass and don’t believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist?

What if he really was having a vision or some kind of encounter?..

Very disappointing to see people conflating this with the Catholic Charismatic Movement that does not disrupt or disrespect the consecration of Mass. This doesn’t sound truly charismatic at all. @casslean @Brendan_64

Actually, what I said was that this seemed like very extreme behaviour based on what I know of the Charismatic Movement. Given that I was not present and did not speak to anyone involved, I could hardly say it was or wasn’t charismatic.

I have been present at so-called “charismatic” events that involved considerable speaking out and spontaneous declarations and eruptions. However, they were not within the context of the Mass, which is why I stated that it seemed unusual to see such activity within Mass.

I’m not sure, but being that they referred to him having an experience, it seems to me that this was not how he usually behaved? Like I said, his group seemed to encourage him too. At some point a man who was wearing a black blazer over his red shirt got up and had him stand up with his arm outstretched towards the altar. And then the other man stared sobbing out loud too. It wasn’t like, silent sob either. It was LOUD. It was hard to hear the priest and he had a mic. I’m not saying he wasn’t having a genuine experience, or that he meant any harm by it, I just don’t know this is how it should have been handled during mass. Especially during the consecration, and I felt kind of guilty for being upset.

The mannerisms, the chanting, the blatant disrespect at the Sacrifice of the Mass sounds very “satanistic.” The man sounds as if he may have been dealing with an evil being/entity.

It sounds and appears evil because it occurred during the sacredness of the Mass.

Did they all go up to receive Holy Communion? Terrifying to imagine if they received communion in order to desecrate Our Lord’s Body.

“ The Lord is here! I can see him!”…“ Look at me! Look at me! I didn’t believe! I doubted now I believe! You are here!”… “ Hurra! Hurrah!”. “ This is not an invitation from me, but from my Father”.
Even the evil one believes in God. I’m sorry, but it sounds so evil and sinister.

It was freaky, I thought maybe I was caught off guard because I’ve never seen anything like this happen in the past. He started out by making odd noises and sobbing so in the church it sounded kind of like it came from everywhere.

They all did go to communion, but scary as it did sound, I really don’t believe they were trying to do anything evil. If anything it kind of looked more like attention seeking? I honestly feel like it was more a matter of trying to get people to go to their retreat. Like my mom said, it all appeared staged somehow. But I don’t want to say anything in case he was actually going through something genuine. I just keep thinking back to the saints, and all I think is of how reverent they were towards the mass.

Sounds like very bizarre behavior to me. I can understand your concern.

No, you have a right to be a bit angry with what you saw, it is highly inappropriate. Hopefully stuff like this will be far and few in between in our lives.

I come from a conservative parish. I like it. Yes, people clap during Mass sometimes and I do not blame father for letting it slide because he has bigger fish to fry. He would never allow what you saw happen though. I recall I went to another parish once and I could tell it was a very liberal parish but I went a couple times because it had the last Mass in the area and I was meeting up with my girlfriend and she was working on Sundays back then so sometimes she would have to go to a late Mass. Well, a woman went up to the ambo and declared "Since there is no higher form of worship than dance, we are going to have dancing today’ and some young girls came in and did liturgical dance. Father seemed very pleased with this even announcing that it had been his dream to see liturgical dance at his parish. I remember getting a semi sick feeling in my stomach while all this went on. Such outright disobedience on fathers part… but, I moved on and hope to never see something like that again. But I will not be shocked if I every did see something like that again. People are weird… I have seen people do all kinds of strange things during consecration, I have seen obviously mentally ill people yell things at father (Well meaning, like “Praise God!”, but still inappropriate) but I just do not let it get to me THAT much. Life is full of unexpected surprises. People will do weird things. Heck, last month someone tried to steal The Eucharist at my parish and was confronted and decided to desecrate the Eucharist.

You have every right to be upset but do not let it disturb you THAT much. Its okay. The good parishes and the good orthodox priests outnumber the liberal parishes and priests who would allow this type of thing to happen.

Hey now, not all Protestants are like this. I still attend my Baptist church and we’re pretty low-key about everything, aside from an “amen” or “praise God” here and there. 🙂
I think April is just misinterpreting what a protestant church is. Mostly, they are liturgical churches that follow a specific Lectionary order, just like Catholics. Most use the same readings for the same Sunday; just the name of the seasons are different, e.g. Ordinary Time vs. X Sunday after Pentecost, etc. What was witnessed by April would be seen in those types of communities.

April: Consider that churches that do not follow a specific Lectionary order of service, like the mega churches that are mostly termed as “Pentecostal.” Those churches, have altar calls and the such…the same you see on TV.

It certainly does sound as though the fellow was having some sort of profound experience of the Real Presence, which is a very good thing, but shouting about it is certainly not typical behavior at Mass. I would very much want to find out more about who those guys were and why they thought that was the appropriate way to present their retreat experience.

I remember that when Father introduced them during the homily, he said something about it being a retreat centered around Our Lord the Holy Spirit. This along with the red shirts and them walking out in a line screaming “ God is fire!” makes me think it’s some kind of movement that may be misunderstanding who the Holy Spirit is? That He is God, and not this kind of extreme emotion, or maybe I’m wrong. I am confused and afraid of saying something that could offend Our Lord.
