This is serious! I may have been falsely accused!

Haha I was just browsing this subforum and boy was I surprised to see this old thread of mine resurrected! 😃

What’s funny is that I’ve recently had to face this girl again…

I feel your pain my friend. Something similar happened to me with a very close friend (so I thought) that I’d known for 23 years. I’d lent her money to get her out of a financial hole and taken her to expensive restaurants and bought expensive presents too. Yet because of an argument because she’d not bothered to thank me for some Christmas presents I’ve now apparently become a stalker and this argument happened at Christmas 2001. I hope that your problem gets sorted more quickly than mine so that you can have some peace.

Hi Zesus! And welcome! šŸ™‚

I just wanted to point out to you that this is an old thread. If you look at the date it goes back to 2008.

But that said, I will pray for you with your situation.

Hope it doesn’t become a serious problem for you but I doubt any court would be stupid enough to construe an argument as stalking unless you made several consecutive unanswered calls or left a stream of messages in circumstances that fail to look like typical dispute resolution. By contrast, your accuser could face criminal problems and a lawsuit for a frivolous accusation.

What’s that with people who accuse others of stalking?

Thank you for that Marie. Hi Chevalier, my many presents that were bought to make her feel special she said were unwanted and she and her family complained to the police. The police at the time considered it harrassment and I ended up in court because the police tricked me into going into an interview without a lawyer. My lawyer when i eventually got one said there wasn’t enough evidence and that it was a pity I hadn’t involved him earlier as it wouldn’t have got this far. However to make things run more smoothly at court he suggested that I agree to be ā€˜bound over’ for a period meaning that I stay out of her way and not contact her. I agreed to this and the charges wee then dropped. I complained about the police officer that had tricked me and got an apology from the inspector. He added that the police had felt used by my accuser for the purposes of a private grudge. He wasn’t happy. I hadn’t made contact for about 10 years and then tried to contact her recently hoping all the problems had blown over. Sadly I got a reply back saying send no more messages or she’ll call the police. A friend also told me that she had referred to me as ā€˜that stalker’ on her facebook page and that apparently I was ā€˜hassling her’ obviously her friends were then joining in saying I was wierd and a freak etc. Then suggesting that her brother pay me a visit and beat me up. All this because of a message after 10 years! I bear her no malice whatsoever in fact I love her and have done for a very long time going back to when we were friends. Though i never told her and although i have done since she doesn’t believe it (or doesn’t want to). Obviously I now need to leave her alone but i still have her and her friends calling me ā€˜stalker’ when she knows very well that i am not. Her friends are only taking her side as they would. I only hope that she is confessing these lies when she goes to confession. Thank you Marie and Chevalier for your kind thoughts in this matter. Best wishes Barry

Hey, Barry. Women sometimes feel suffocated when confronted with too much attention. Sometimes they feel like we’re trying to force the attraction out of them while they aren’t attracted. And sometimes they have a bit of a point. When you’re in love it’s easy to overdo on showering the other person with attention, gifts, whatever, aiming subconsciously to oblige that person into returning our affections. This happened to me when I was younger.

On the other hand, there’s that thing called, pardon the language but this is what experts call it, rape game. Power is gained or rather felt by making someone into a shamed perpetrator. One feels important and noticed when being a ā€œvictimā€, hence some people jump at an occasion to make it look like that. Or they’re just bored and nothing’s going on. Perhaps that woman has some personality issues making life hard for her.

I don’t know what gives. Sometimes they just react that way. Guess you need to hang out with mature ones that won’t go back and forth on you or play games.

Again, sorry to hear about the whole thing and believe me when I say I can relate. I’ve had women turn hostile on me after a while of ā€œprincess treatmentā€. First false accusation came when I was 10, though it wasn’t romantically related. Probably that’s what sent me to law school, indirectly. But life’s still beautiful and there are plenty of sensible ladies to be friends with.

Thank you Chevalier. I just wanted to make her feel special but you may be right and instead it made her feel suffocated. I went overboard on the last Christmas we were friends traveling down to London from my home near Coventry and buying some presents from Harrods for her. This was again to make her feel special, I also composed a poem for her. Maybe as you say all this was just too much for her, I still wish that she’d had the courtesy to thank me though after making so much effort . I’m wondering whether she was embarrassed after I challenged her for not thanking me which may have caused her initial reaction and her unwillingnes to meet me face to face to try to clear things up. Anyway she obviously doesn’t want to talk any more even after 10 years so there isn’t much i can do apart from trying to find someone else to treat like a princess assuming that there is someone out there that might like that. Anyway I thank you for your suport and comments on this subject. Thank you it helped me very much. Best wishes Barry

I too was recently accused of stalking by an ex friend of 21 years. I tried several times to ask her to please talk to me and sort out our problem. I even wrote to her priest asking him if he minded helping as a mediator. However he said that he couldn’t help. It was therefore left to me to try and work out why my friend broke off the friendship after i’d lent her money to help her out of a financial hole and made a special effort including going to Harrods in London and composing a poem for her for christmas. However instead of being grateful for the effort I showed or even just ringing me to wish me a happy christmas she ignored me all Christmas until New Years eve when she sent me a text ending the 21 year friendship. She converted to the Catholic church in order to marry her boyfriend some years back but apparently the marriage only lasted 3 months due to her being unfaithfuil to the husband. Anyway back to my case I tried several times to talk to her begging her to please talk so that we can sort out whatever the problem is and to let her know that i miss her very much and love her. Then completely without warning a few weeks ago there is a knock at my door and the police arrest me and turn over my house. Although they find no eveidence of stalking (I’ve only seen her twice in three years and that was by accident) they charged me with harrassment yet all I was doing was asking her to talk and sort the problem out. I’ve apologised even though i did nothing wrong but still she refused to forgive even though there was nothing to forgive. She then added to the police that she was in fear for her safety yet i’ve never threatened her nor given her any reason to be in fear of me so I’m baffled by her accusations. I’ve only ever been gentle towards her and treated her like a queen. It hurts very much to hear what she has accused me of. I had to plead guilty as I had sent her several messages but much of what she said wasn’t actuall true. My solicitor didn’t want to ā€˜upset the judges’ so didn’t argue any of the points. I feel like i’m being railroaded by her lies and the legal system just becuase I tried to treat her like a queen. She even said told the police that she ended the friendship because i bought her too many presents yet couldn’t tell me in a conversation. Whats more she kept the presents that she ā€˜didn’t want’.

You shouldn’t plead guilty to avoid upsetting the judges and a solicitor shouldn’t be suggesting that, although it’s possible the solicitor believed you messed up with those messages but phrased it like that to avoid hurting your feelings or looking as though he didn’t believe your innocence. A lawyer shouldn’t be afraid of judges! I remember telling three unappealable robes, each of them twice my own age, that they were making communication difficult between us. And that was after almost giving the Attorney General’s counsel (a law professor specialising in the exact type of procedure being followed in that trial) a bit of a heart attack that’s bound to remember forever. Basically, you flirt with the Art, you eat flak for breakfast (and wash it down with blood and tears). But I’ve recently had to watch a partially innocent man agree to probation to avoid ending up with a sentence as a result of contestation. My friend was the counsel for him and just basically had me shut up and stay away. Perhaps for the guy’s own good.

Well, some people just seem to derive validation from putting others in legal trouble. Making themselves into victims makes them feel important, gives them the attention and validation they feel lacking from their lives. Women are exposed to pressure to act like that. Victim mentality runs strong in this society at this day and age.

Eh, and ****** job by the police and others to accept a case where a woman sent them after you because she didn’t know how to react to gifts. Getting soft in the brain or in the knees, I wonder? I’d probably have told her to go learn communication skills unless she had solid proof, the criminal kind of proof, univocally pointing towards a criminal act by whomever she named. Or go away. False accusation is a crime too. Even bothering the minions of the law without a real need may be, depending on the jurisdiction.

This is a really good book about stalking if you want to see how it plays out in real life:

Partner Stalking: How Women Respond, Cope, and Survive

I’m not saying these guys weren’t falsely accused. They probably were. But there is a lot of real stalking in our society and a lot of domestic violence, especially in my state. A lot of women who get stalked never get helped for a lot of reasons, often because other people just blow it off. And anyway it’s really not that hard for a guy to seem threatening when he’s angry. If a woman has been stalked recently, she might take relatively innocent behavior as threatening.

It is sad when someone is falsely accused though. And I feel for anyone who is.

Thanks Chevalier, I was guilty of sending messages which I suppose could be seen as harrassment even though i was only pleading with her to sort out our problem. I just thought her reaction was over the top. She could merely have rang me and asked me to stop had she wanted me to and I would have stopped if i’d known that it was upsetting her. If she’d talked to me when she broke up the friendship instead of doing it by text we could have sortied things out there and then. Even if we just agreed to disagree, having a friendship broken because you tried to make them feel special and valued seems a little strange to me but that’s what she chose to do or at least that’s what she chose to tell the police. Still keeping the presents mind you. I was hoping that the priest might have helped in the name of peace and goodwill that they preach at Christmas. I’m guessing that he wasn’t allowed to for some reason or just couldn’t. I’ve always been a gentleman to her so it’s very hurtful for her to say she was afraid for her safety. This will almost certainly resault in a restraining order now which could prevent me visiting my mother who is sometimes unwell but lives quite near Karen (my ex friend). It all depends on what distance they set in the order. So disappointing when talking face to face could have sorted all this. Thanks for all your kind words anyway.

This is a creepy thread; however, it is a good thing to think about.

There is a guy named Gottman that describes relationships as a series of ā€œbids and responsesā€.

Thus, if someone responds to your ā€œbidā€ in a negative manner, then stop bidding and leave the person alone.

Don’t try to ā€œwork it outā€.

Infatuations always fade away with time.

Thank you JackieMom, Dedo for most of the time she was reacting positively but having made a special effort to make her feel special that Christmas she then suddenly switched and turned against me. That is what threw me, we were friends for 21 years as I’ve previously said so thought I at least deserved an explanation. After all that time it wasn’t infatuation but love and that is the most powerful emotion in the world and very difficult to just ignore and doesn’t just go away I’m afraid. But thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut.

Well, I certainly want to punch or at least seriously shake anybody who turns a blind eye to the abuse of women. On the other hand, some women have a way of using accusations of specific abuse instrumentally, to achieve a different goal, not to address an offence really committed. Rape game is one of the forms of it, there are others.

Then again, I guess we men have the luxury of being able to tell people to just go away, which is not as easy for women.

At any rate, someone who uses false accusations in the legal system to deal with his problems does need a compulsory training on law & justice matters, just like people who drive under influence etc.

And lawyers, judges, cops etc. should act like idiots contributing to the creation of a world in which a message trying to salvage a relationship can be seen as criminal matter. According to some people, the entire world should halt and tremble and salute when a woman is having a negative feeling. As opposed to treating the woman like an adult and helping her sort it out for real.

Seriously, I think nobody should be allowed to file an accusation without first telling the alleged offender that there is a problem and it needs to stop. One of the most necessary characteristics of the law is certainty, and here we have a circus with rabbits jumping out of hats.

…And especially in long-term friendships. The law isn’t meant to sort out those problems. People need to fix their friendships on their own. And to file a surprise accusation on a friend of many years is unthinkable. She certainly isn’t saving your friendship by filing an accusation on you.

Also, perhaps you need to sit down and think about your patterns when it comes to falling in love with women. Perhaps there is something which draws you to damaged, wounded types? They can have a specific charisma, their suffering can even be attractive to you. There is the entire femme fatale lure, the drama. In some cases they also learn to manipulate, though I’m not saying that people who suffer learn to manipulate, it takes a longer and more complex process (e.g. the development of NPD in either extremely spoiled or extremely neglected children). It could be an equivalent of the ā€œdark and handsomeā€, the bad boy charm that marks the doom of so many women in bad relationships. I’ve had a bit of that tendency myself, which is why I’m saying. It’s hard to leave such a person without help as you see it, but you need to divorce the helping from the romantically loving, as they absolutely don’t have to go together. If you have a need to be, shall we say, the prince charming that rides on a white horse to save the damsel in distress, you’ll need to address it. I’m not saying you should become another supporter of the ā€œwoman complete in herself and man unnecessaryā€ model but there are just some things that need ordering if you find yourself a protective, chivalrously inclined man in the 21st century.

…And realise that you aren’t responsible for everything. If people send you away, they can be held responsible for that and for the results of it, and be allowed to experience the consequences, it’s not all on you.

I think falsely accusing someone of rape or stalking is despicable. But the problem is that stalking is often defined as something like: ā€œan intentional pattern of repeated or unwanted pursuit that a ā€˜reasonable person’ would consider threatening or fear inducing.ā€ A woman who was stalked and beaten by her last boyfriend, might consider it threatening for a man to call her repeatedly or show up at her house, whereas a woman who had never been mistreated might consider either thing flattering, or at least non-threatening. Either reaction might seem reasonable based on their different life experiences.

And the other problem is that men pursuing, even in the face of rejection, is glamorized in movies as romantic. But in real life it often comes across as a little creepy. I’m not saying that women can’t choose to do the wrong thing just as much as men-- neither sex has a monopoly on wrongdoing. I’m just saying that these women might have considered behavior threatening that wasn’t intended to be so.

Yeah, but the reasonable person standard has to be all-round reasonable, it can’t really be ā€œwhat a reasonable person conditioned by a specific trauma would do.ā€

Well, I’ll be frank, I do believe that at least some women at least until they reach a certain age (which is older than the beginning of the middle age), just can’t fully figure out what they want in this regard. One day they take offence because a man they told to stop contacting them actually did stop contacting them, the other day they take offence because a romantic interest didn’t immediately and fully comply with such a wish but tried to negotiate.

Also, the attractiveness of the man may have something to do with it. Or the glamourisation of head games women play with men.

What hurts the most is that we were friends for 21 years, she knew that I wouldn’t hurt a fly and certainly not her. All I did basically that apparently gave her cause to end the friendship was shower her with gifts in an attempt to make her feel special. She ended the friendship by text rather than have the guts to face me after 21 years then to top it all she refused to talk about it and tell me why she was ending it, leaving me to try and work out what I’d done wrong. I shouldn’t have sent so many messages asking her to talk but I believed that the friendship was worth the effort of fighting for it. Had i married i would have stuck at it and til death us do part would have meant just that. once i commit to something I stick to it including friendship. Sadly my mistake was expecting her to have the same commitment. If she couldn’t make her marriage last more than 3 months after all the trouble of converting how could I expect her to make a friendship last so long. What also gets me is the lack of compassion or forgiveness on her part. I forgave her for the way she has treated me but she won’t forgive me. I have always been given the impression that forgiveness is an important part of the Catholic church and that has been reinforced on here. She is having her son brought up the Catholic way in a Catholic church yet she doesn’t seem to follow many of your ā€˜rules’, that is if forgiveness is a rule rather than a guide. She just seems to put herself up as superior to anyone who disagrees with her but really noone is superior to anyone as we all make mistakes and are all fallible.

Unfortunately, women are taught that that’s okay to do. It’s a trend in modern psychology to train people into being perfect survivors.

Yes, and as long as your description reflects reality (I’m not saying it doesn’t, but sometimes descriptions are one-sided), that overreaction was certainly not worth criminal proceedings. I still marvel how the cops and judges didn’t figure this out, it’s beyond me. Like I said, if I were the judge, someone acting like that about bringing charges would be ploughing the snow on bus stops for a couple of weeks for contempt of court. Alongside his lawyer.
Had i married i would have stuck at it and til death us do part would have meant just that. once i commit to something I stick to it including friendship. Sadly my mistake was expecting her to have the same commitment.
Yeah, and I’m not saying ā€œmistakeā€ in a jaded way. It really is true that just because you make a commitment to someone doesn’t yet mean you can expect the commitment back, or with the same intensity. Especially when the commitment becomes romanticised and crosses some lines between friendship and romance. You just really earn the right to be loved by a woman. However, IMHO you can earn the right to some basic respect and decency, especially in a long-term friendship.
If she couldn’t make her marriage last more than 3 months after all the trouble of converting how could I expect her to make a friendship last so long. Sounds like ā€œmy typeā€ of woman. You really need to stop being drawn to women who exhibit those type of qualities.

And you may want to change your method of drawing them. You’ve empirically verified that showering them with gifts when they’re not quite stable doesn’t work.

Hi Barry,

I don’t know you in person, but you sound like a decent guy who was on the receiving end of some very bad behavior. I certainly wasn’t trying to defend her. Just making the point that in some places at least the laws about stalking are overly vague. And stalking is common enough that it is a real concern for women.

I have a step-brother who was falsely accused of rape by and ex-girlfriend who makes a habit of accusing guys who dump her of that. It really is despicable to accuse someone falsely, besides a waste of everyone’s time and money. And it’s really hard on the guy too. 😦

Yes, Christians are supposed to forgive, and it’s good you forgave her, but I’d steer clear of her for now. Who knows what else she’ll accuse you of? You sound like you have a big heart, and I hope you find someone who appreciates that.
