This may sound silly

This may sound silly. But, I ate a whole pizza yesterday. And now I feel as though I committed the sin of gluttony. Did I?

Overeating at lunchtime may show a lack of prudence or self discipline, but pulling out the gluttony flag takes it too far.

The deadly sins are habits that are opposed to virtue, which are also habits. Virtue is not a one time good deed just as the habits that oppose virtue are not a one time bad decision. These things are habits. Virtue and vice are habitual, not one time events.

I’m not sure I fully understand what constitutes the sin of gluttony. It doesn’t really seem to be a clear-cut line. Most people in the western world eat significantly more caloric value than what they need to be healthy. That’s why people have to spend hours of their week working out in gyms to make up for it. So I would think that simply eating more than what you need to be healthy doesn’t quite reach the level of sin, especially since the Church encourages us to have celebratory meals and feast to commemorate important days. My best guess is gluttony comes into play when one makes choices to hoard food or to keep it from others in order to have more for themselves. For example, if you ate this pizza hiding out in your car so you didn’t have to share it with your husband, that might be gluttony. If you neglect you other finances and your charitable giving so you can have Starbucks everyday, that would probably gluttony. Or if you spent all your money on booze or cheesecake and made your kids each Cheerios three meals a day to make up for it. I realize that the line is probably less extreme than all that, but it might be that in a society where food is so easy to come by, gluttony is just less common.

I ate a whole Pizza, too. It was about the size of a reg. dinner plate. The kind you get for a dollar. “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!” However, I often eat a small package of crackers for breakfast, gen. skip lunch, have a late afternoon meal. Keep in mind that Sundays and Holy Feast days are ‘free days.’ Peace.

It would be if you ate whole pizzas for a week

If you were not necessarily hungry after eating those first few pieces, then it could be gluttony. Eating for the sole purpose of pleasure is considered gluttony.

Well, when you have a bad conscience about something it is either scrupulous or you really didn’t do the right thing. And if it was a sin, I would guess it was a venial sin. One of those weaknesses a person gives into only to say afterwards: I shouldn’t have.

I was at a buffet with a group of church friends and did the same: overeating. I only do that on weddings or special occasions and it’s also a cultural habit to overeat on those days. All together, the sort of yearly one-time “slip up” that reminds me to be careful.

I’m not much of an expert with the virtue of “temperance” that is opposed to gluttony. I have a very high metabolism so it is hard for me to gain weight and mostly my worry is not eating enough.

I travel to Rome, Italy occasionally and usually drive to a restaurant located just outside the city that has a 200 year old brick pizza oven. There, it’s a common sight to see one person eat one rather large pizza. It’s a thin crust pizza and served with scissors for cutting it into strips which are easy to pick up and eat. So, I’d say you were observing a longstanding tradition. 😎

I just confessed to gluttony 24 hrs before this happened. Maybe I am being too hard on myself…

In his college days, my brother regularly ate a whole pizza.

A one-time mistake is unlikely to be gluttony.

That said, it really depends on the size and type of pizza. A large deep dish from a Chicago style family restaurant is a far cry from one of the California Kitchen or Newman’s Own thin crust found in the freezer at a grocery store. The former is easily 3-5x larger with far more carbs.

Yes. Without question.
You mean an honest to goodness large pizza ?
The kind pizza delivery drivers deliver to the house ?
I mean, where’s the moderation…
that’s not exactly saving some for tomorrow…
Sorry, but that was gluttony.
Book of proverbs have a few warnings…
25:16 “ Hast thou found honey ?
eat so much as is SUFFIENT for thee …
lest thou be filled therewith a vomit it “

Was there a point where you thought, “Okay, if I eat any more, it will be a sin,” and you continued anyhow? I think it matters as to your state of mind at the time. For example, a pie or hot dog eating contest would be what I think of as gluttony. I could be wrong, however.

Your confessor could clarify this situation and I would go with what he says or how he defines gluttony. 🍕

Eating can be important in building muscle. Typically you want to burn the same calories as you eat, or less if you want to lose weight.
Cheat days are days where you purposefully eat more calories than needed so that your metabolism doesn’t slow down.

I think it depends on a lot of things.

From what I saw before, it’s like eating, then making yourself puke, then eating again, etc. like at Roman feasts
