Good idea. I really should not be posting now anyway. I am deeply grieving a death of a loved one, so my words are cold. I feel cold. I need the warmth of Our Lady, you are so right. I guess I came back to feel something again, and seeing stuff like this makes me feel even less.

Thank you
Saddened to read of your loss and grief. Will keep you in daily prayer with Our Lady…Barb

Indulgences appeal to some and to others not…room for all in God’s Kingdom. Indulgences are certainly a part of Church teaching…Barb:)

You’re right. Personally, I’m an indulgence junkie- I love 'em! They give us an opportunity to help the souls in purgatory, not to mention ourselves!

The long established Catholic Tradition of indulgences transferred to the Souls in Purgatory or handed over to Jesus, Mary or one of the saints to apply where the most good will be done, is a spiritual work of Mercy and does reveal a disposition of Mercy, to whom Mercy will be granted. A beautiful tradition of piety and fraternal love and a witness to the Doctrine of The Mystical Body.

I’m sorry to hear this. Death seems to follow me and I’ve learned to look for God’s grace’s during these times. He will uphold you. Be open to what He sends. Prayers for you. Tim

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I will pray for the repose of your family member’s soul and for you.

Okay fine. How many per soul? are the partials cumlative?

This whole thing makes me wince.
Don’t let it, God’s ways are not our ways.
I prayed a novener for a year about 4 to 5 hours per day 365 days, and more times just in case some of the prayers were not good enough. 15 prayers and conclusion. I then said it for another year when I realised the amount of people who would be saved from hell and other places that was good enough for me.

When I had finished I wondered why I was not getting strong temptations and asked Jesus why? He took me back to the 12th promis that he would preserve me from strong temptations.

I saw the men i prayed for die with canser it seemed so sad until one day they called me around to their place and all of them (about 13) had given their hearts to Jesus, and then their life was taken from them. Wow what a blessing I know that I have those mates who Iwill one day see again and who are praying for me… Amen amen

Again today I could not find my mag tourch $100 (for work tonight) My wife and I prayed to Jesus to enliten me as to where it was. I desided to pray to St Anthony ( my patron saint) and my wife also prayed. A thought came to me I rang work and there it was i now have it.
God’s ways not our ways. don’t wince give it over to God tell Him you know His ways are far above yours.

A note of correction to my note of correction. (What’s good for the goose, eh Lily? ;))

Lily’s above post referenced the newer 1986 Norms on Indulgences. My post referenced the older Norms. However the substance of my post still stands, in so far as the 1986 Norms repeats the older norms on the subject of timing. The citation to the new norms should have been 23.1 and 23.3.

  1. *]Beside the exclusion of all attachment to sin, even venial sin, the requirements for gaining a plenary indulgence are the performance of the indulgenced work and fulfillment of three conditions: sacramental confession, eucharistic communion, and prayer for the pope’s intentions.
    *](omitted)
*]The three conditions may be carried out several days preceding or following performance of the prescribed work. But it is more fitting that the communion and the prayer for the pope’s intentions take place on the day the work is performed.

  1. Thank you for finding that link Lily!

NOTE!: I don’t think this is actually the most current Enchiridion of Indulgences. There is a FOURTH EDITION published in 1999. However, I don’t think anyone has translated that from the Latin yet. If we reference this most current edition my above reference would actually be 20.1 and 20.3!

Thank you! That’s it! They DID translate the 1999 Latin into English in 2006 and I missed it.

By the way, The Beauty of Grace Calendar by Bridegroom Press seems like a great way to keep track of the indulgences available. You can purchase it on the web from various Catholic companies.

Take a look!

awesome! This is an indulgence junkies dream come true! Thank you!

The link didn’t work for me?! Sounds like a great thing. I love the idea of charity for the suffering souls, especially those who have no one to pray for them. Any tool to help us help them in the One Body of Christ…is most welcome.

Prayer is as dust in my mouth right now…and going to Mass is really difficult…I’m really distracted with discomfort and fuzzy mindedness from chemo…but I am going to really make an effort to just go through Advent and Christmas season even if it’s just an act of the will…pray for me that I can do it. I want to want to pray and worship, I’m just finding it really hard. Thanks.

Liz,

Perhaps you can try this link:
totallycatholic.com/lampmin/wall2007snippet.pdf

Or you can go to the website itself and scroll down, you will find the link there too.

I’m sorry about your struggles with the side effects of chemo. I’ll say a prayer.

I wanted to share with you one of the so-called general type indulgences - it might be applicable especially in your situation Liz!
“A partial indulgence is granted to the Christian faithful who, while performing their duties and enduring the difficulties of life, raise their minds in humble trust to God and make, at least mentally, some pious invocation.”
Perhaps a “Jesus, I trust in Thee” would suffice as a suitable invocation.

You can read the about the three general grants here and here.

What do you think?
VC

P.S. Those links to the general type grants are to the 3rd edition. I don’t have the 4th and current edition in English, but I took a look at the Latin version on the Vatican site and it looks substantially the same. I’m not Latin scholar though.

I am part Maori ( New Zealander) and for us we relate to the death not as a loss but of a part of our family (extended) gone to our God before us so this is a time of Joy. We cry for the loss but rejoyce in our Father in heavens love in our returning to Him for ever.
Mayyou have this peace for ever
God bless

I tried the link to the snippet PDF and it froze up my computer! Had to reboot…but then tried the link to the store webpage and it worked. Thanks for that.

I know about indulgences, have already offered this up before I was in the thick of it. It’s just so hard to pray and go to Mass right now. Hopefully just squirming around on the altar as a holy and living sacrifice is good enough for now…but I really am going to try to go to Mass for CTK and Advent/Christmas season.
