Because they don’t teach history in our schools like they used to, these folks were probably unaware that while Jefferson did own slaves, he also freed them, long before Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
He wasn’t that bad, didn’t own and rape as many human beings as other slave owners.
So, when does this madness stop? When we haven’t any statues left?
No, just when the bad ones are gone.
When we no longer have a history in the eyes of future generations, born into a country without any representations of how it began, how it evolved, and those who made it possible?
This is always such a weird argument, the people erasing history are the ones trying to sweep evil crimes under the rug, not the ones justifying their protests with actual history. The reasons people want these statues removed is because they are very aware of how the country began, how it evolved, and those who made it possible.
Some of our historical figures were downright interesting as people. Reading about them is interesting. Do we want kids in the future to miss out on the experience of learning about them? Where will be our foundation, for them?
No one’s advocating burning history books, they’re advocating expanding historical education beyond the whitewashed version most American children receive.
Lincoln loved all mankind and races. I see the statue as a free slave looking up in appreciation towards Lincoln.
“I will say then, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters of the negroes, or jurors, or qualifying them to hold office, of having them to marry with white people. I will say in addition, that there is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I suppose, will forever forbid the two races living together upon terms of social and political equality, and inasmuch, as they cannot so live, that while they do remain together, there must be the position of superior and inferior, that I as much as any other man am in favor of the superior position being assigned to the white man.” - Abraham Lincoln
