I thank the person who gave the original Hebrew and said it means, “Thou shall not murder”. I read that the meaning of the Hebrew is, “Thou shall not lie in wait to kill someone” This is pre meditated Murder.
If you kill someone who is trying to kill you (self Defense) and this was the first time he tried to kill anyone, you have saved him from committing the sin of Murder and have not committed a sin your self. You may have saved that person from going to Hell.
To the person who takes the commandment to mean thou shall not kill anything and so does not even kill bugs; Plants are also alive and even if eaten raw they die in your stomach. So in order not to kill anything you can’t eat plants either. But then you will starve to death and would have killed yourself which is the murder of a human being.
I hope I have written something that has been helpful to someone. As an aside, the Bible is the inerrant Word of God only in the original Hebrew and Greek of the original texts. All translations have problems due to the difficulty of translating one word in the original language with one word in English. Whenever in doubt it is necessary to go back to the definition of the word in the original Hebrew or Greek. There is a website, <blueletterbible.com> where you can read the Bible in any of about 10 translations and where it is easy to get the definition of the word in the original language.
God bless every one who reads or comments in this forum.
