I’m posting this article to show an example of the fear porn that passes for our mainstream news reporting these days.

Governor Newsom is just being petulant at this point as he was with Orange County and its beaches recently.

Nowhere in this article will the alert reader find any reporting on cases and deaths in Shasta and surrounding counties. But of course they can’t report that, that would show most people just how ridiculous this is. Go over to the Coronavirus map by counties site here:

You will find Shasta County just south of the California-Oregon border. Let me save you the trouble:
Shasta County - 32 cases, 4 deaths
Siskiyou County (north of Shasta) - 5 cases, 0 deaths
Modoc County (NE of Shasta) - 0 cases, 0 deaths
Lassen County (E of Shasta) - 0 cases, 0 deaths
Plumas County (SE of Shasta) - 4 cases, 0 deaths
Tehama County (S of Shasta) - 1 case, 0 deaths
Trinity County (SW,W of Shasta) - 0 cases, 0 deaths
Humboldt County (W of Shasta, 1 county over) - 61 cases, 0 deaths
Del Norte County (NW of Shastaj) - 3 cases, 0 deaths

I could go a bit further afield, but you get the picture. Fair reporting would have included this data. But fear-based reporting can’t go there.

So now we’re doing collective punishment?
So the Democrats in the rest of the country hold out hope that Newsom among others will be worthy of presidential consideration in four years? You’re seeing his style here and now. This is how he behaves.

I’ve been pretty in favor of the shutdowns, but collective punishment turns my stomach.

I didn’t know the virus cared if it infects Republicans or Democrats.

2000 people in one spot doesn’t seem prudent right now. 🤷‍♀️

If one wants to go by the cases per 100k population, that fails too:

Shasta County is 2nd to Humboldt County for the most cases in counties that far north in California. Humboldt shows 45 cases per 100k; Shasta shows 17.8.

By comparison, Santa Clara County, where California’s first confirmed case was detected: 121 cases per 100k. Los Angeles County: 321. Orange County (where last week’s beach protests were taking place): 112.

These smaller counties with far fewer cases per capita should have already been allowed to restart at their own discretion. People want to stay home, sure no one is making them leave their homes.

Pray tell, what’s wrong with letting people in these smaller and far less affected counties choose for themselves?

Keep people up to date. Concentrate resources on protecting the vulnerable. Allow health care to restart the normal stuff if they have processes in place to separate out the infectious from the rest.

Let the people choose their own risk level. What a revolutionary thought that is …

It won’t be a fast restart as many will choose to stay home more than they used to. But at least the choice is theirs.

The critical questions are: where are the people in attendance flocking from; what was the infection rate in those locations: and what sort of testing was done to gain entry to the event. Having a large event at this time, without proper precautions is an excellent way to bring an outbreak to an area that was previously nearly virus free. It is prudent to extend the mitigation measures there.

Then you missed the entire point of my posting the numbers for the surrounding counties. Go to that map I posted and check those numbers for yourself

You missed the point of mine.
Is there reasons to believe that only people from Shasta and adjoining counties were admitted?
No one whatsoever form high incidence counties in CA? Are people stopped at the border, tested, and if positive isolated? Where I live, we are all pretty comfortable about getting out - except for the risk posed by people coming from away to be in a low incidence area.

No screening, to be sure. But I once lived in California and knew people from the northern end of the state and have vacationed there more than once. You have to go at least 2 1/2 hours drive to find yourself in any city with a significant enough number of cases to be as concerned as you are. That wasn’t reported. This event drew 2000+ people who likely knew the risk and went anyway.

Plus don’t forget they were out in the fresh air and sunshine. The weather is nice there at this time of year, not real hot like it can get in the summer. Not to mention even the CDC knows fresh air and sunshine are good yet beaches and parks are closed while enclosed environments like Costco and Walmart remain open.

As I keep saying, whatever happened to letting people choose their level of risk in these sparsely affected areas? No one proposes making people leave their homes.

The choice isn’t really, “I don’t mind getting sick.” The choice is “do I mind putting others at risk.“

People can carry the illness, be asymptomatic and then pass it on.

Choosing to infect others isn’t an ethical risk.

I remember when HIV positive kids were feared from attending school. There was minimal risk for them to infect others.

Coronavirus is deadly and communicable through casual contact.

A rodeo at this time isn’t an essential service.

Being outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air reduces quite a bit the risk of airborne transmission that you are afraid of. At that point, the risk becomes one of touch. Touching surfaces that infected people might have touched. In the bright sunlight, how many surfaces are going to remain contaminated?

I strongly believe I have a higher risk at Costco than I do going outside to one of the more popular local parks.

California Governor Newsom recently issued new guidelines for counties to reopen. He wants 0, that’s right, zero, deaths in two weeks as well as just one new case per 10k residents. At that rate, counties in southern California will never ever get out from under the lockdown. LA County will be locked down for a decade at this rate. Zero deaths for two weeks in a population of 10.3m? If Newsom sticks to his guns, I think we can write off the economy there.

Don’t be surprised if we start hearing about a recall campaign. There is precedent for a governor recall in California: Gray Davis lost his job in 2003, iirc.

People are mindful, but they also know that outside of LA County, San Diego and the Bay area, the state is not that bad. Even in LA County there are hospitals that are under utilized, but the lockdown has long since CEASED to be about flattening the curve for hospitals.
