Love Fr. Z’s commentary on this:
What do you want to bet that, if the Attorney General does investigate, no one will be held accountable for a “hate crime”. Instead, the parish will be accused of being the hateful actor in this despicable round of threats and intimidation.

Not long ago I posted something from Life News about a case of church vandalism in Portland claimed by a group called “Angry Queers”.

We are going to be seeing a great deal more of this.

Have you also the impression that what is going in the press about the same-sex and what is rising up right now across every sphere of life, is more than just the usual media feeding frenzy after someone chums the waters?

It is almost as if a signal has been given and a plan is being implemented by an organized community, as it were.

More intolerance from the “paragons of tolerance” known as the homosexualists. :banghead:

So, we`re sinking towards the equivalent of pre-World War II Nazi Germany, complete with intimidation!!!

Good on Father Z for using plain language, as usual! 👍

PS
Crescentinus: that`s what hypocrisy is all about.

And this is not an isolated incident. Check this video out demonstrating similar (and worse) acts of homosexual “tolerance” from TFP (h/t to the good Father)

If this problem reaches here to the Far East, I might as well do something drastic against the hypocrisy.

Drastic? The only action commanded by Jesus when it comes to those who hate us is to love them…

Thanks for the link! 👍

Freedom of speech for everyone. Well, except for some churches who are not allowed to say certain things.

Tolerance for all, except for those same churches.

St. Francis Xavier parish in Massachusetts put out a sign on church property saying, “Two men are friends, not spouses.” The church then received many menacing, obscene calls, one threatening to burn the church down. And many hostile signs were put out at the church. (Because of this, they took the sign down.)

The word ‘many’ does not appear in your link, mdgspencer. Is this an addition by a later scribe? Apart from the threat to burn the church down, which is clearly a crime, I am at a loss to know what people are complaining about. Of course people will respond to provocation of this type. Of course they will get angry. It’s called politics.

We’re mostly trying to figure out how the sign is “provocation” in the first place. Everyone already knows what the Church believes. Putting up a sign stating the Church’s beliefs is not provocation. These people are pissed off, literally, over the fact that a church dared state its beliefs at all, and it wasn’t even a rude way to state them. Their anger is, at its core, born of the fact that this church is expressing beliefs different from theirs. They are, far and away, the provocateurs, not the church.

Reminds me of

Those who are merciful to the evil, will be cruel to the kind.
-Talmudic proverb

Looking at Google Map, the rectory is located across the street from the police station, with the church adjacent to the rectory. I am not sure of the location of the sign, but the proximity to the police station may have protected it.

There is no excuse for violent threats or violent actions. A peaceful protest of the sign, held outside the church, was taking place. Joining the protest would have been the more appropriate to express disagreement.

Since voicemail messages were left, I think it will be possible to track down the culprits. I hope the authorities do that.

Here is an article from the local newspaper:
That reaction has ranged from quiet protest to an expletive-laced voicemail message saying the church should be burned.
Vanessa Raymond, a Facebook user who has posted heavily on this issue, said she left a counter-sign at the parish that everyone is welcome in this community.
Meanwhile, three signs of a very different tone were found Wednesday on church property. Among other things they tell the reader to “Pray for Death” and make a sexually derogatory reference to the Virgin Mary.

Here is a photo of the church sign before it was taken down. The protest sign, seen in front, has been taken down since it was on church property.

BTW, the town of Acushnet, Massaschusetts is about 50 miles south of Boston. It is on the northeast corner of the New Bedford metro area.

The Church believes a lot of things. It believes the Father and the Son are consubstantial with each other. But this church did not put up a sign about that belief. It chose to put up a sign singling out a highly-specific moral position on an emotionally-charged debate using informal language designed to provoke. I know the gift of prophecy is not overly-used in the Catholic Church, but the Holy Spirit would not have been needed to predict the outcome of this action.

I hope, by the way, that you are not right about what ‘literally’ happened to the protesters. 😃

Get that, folks? Everything’s political now. So get with the totalitarian zeitgeist or you’ve got it comin’ to ya!

You can’t *buy *that level of honesty from the average lefty atheist.

I suspect that much of the frustration surrounding the issue is an apparent double standard. When a “new atheist” or anti-Christian mocks some tenet of Christianity the Christian is expect to laugh it off or not to respond at all. Conversely, when a Church posts an unpopular message outrage ensues and no one really cares. If the right to give and take offence was constant against social groups (some) of the complaints would die down.

With that said, you do have a point. The sign was intended to provoke a reaction and it did. If they didn’t think it would anger some individuals then why was it put out. Conversely, if they knew it would anger the community then they shouldn’t act surprised.

I would bet money that it has, in fact, put up a sign about the trinity. It’s just that people don’t hate the church for that belief, and so no one calls in threats to them because of it. Churches put up all sorts of signs about all sorts of beliefs all the time. People don’t like this particular belief, and so they cry hatred while themselves committing acts of hate.
