Three sets of parents who wanted their children's Holy Communion date changed as it clashed with a One Direction concert have failed to rally support

The unholy row erupted at a primary school in Ireland when the youngsters got tickets to see the boy band on May 24 next year.

The parents of 27 other pupils attending Raheen Gaelscoil in Limerick had to be balloted over a possible change of date to three weeks earlier.

A school spokesman said parents voted overnight so the fairest outcome could be reached for all concerned.

“The result of that ballot has been overwhelmingly in favour of retaining the original date,” he said.

“Staff, parents and children of Gaelscoil an Raithin look forward to preparing for this very special celebration next May.”

The vote was taken after the three families objected to the May 24 date, which had been provisionally earmarked by the local parish priest.

One Direction, including Mullingar native Niall Horan, will play three sell-out gigs in Croke Park in Dublin - more than 200km away - the same weekend as part of their mammoth Where We Are tour.

It is understood a meeting in the school became extremely heated when the parents involved insisted that the date be changed.

Other parents became incensed at what one reportedly described as the “disrespect shown to the blessed sacrament”.

How dare the Church interfere with a One Direction concert, I am outraged! 😉
 
The story is not really the fact that the families wanted to change the date to be able to go to the concert and be able to attend the first holy communion. The thing I found disturbing is the way the media tried to blow it out of porportion. it seemed they wanted to make the issue, which is bigger one direction or Jesus?
in fact I heard one news commentator quote john lennon " we are bigger than Jeus"

I’m pretty sure the ‘Progressive’ Catholics would be all for this. It’s not like they show any respect for the sacraments in the first place.
 
Unfortunate sign of the times, especially when the parents do not understand the Sacraments. Our parish priest gave out details well in advance, but still had parents asking for the whole event to be delayed for their convenience.
 
Much ado about little. There is no reason they can’t receive at another time. There is no sacramental significance to them receiving with the class and if they were Eastern Catholics they would have been receiving all along.

True, but I bet the parents wanted their children all dressed up and center of attention, loads of photos and to enjoy a free party afterwards. I doubt that they gave much thought to the solemnity of the occasion or the real reason to celebrate.
 
Wow, it sure doesn’t take much anymore to be “bigger than Jesus.”

Parents need to stop “dating” their children and stop being afraid to discipline them. :mad:
 
Three sets of parents out of 27 complaining about the date and time for anything seems about right. I don’t see anything statistically significant to imply some kind of church overthrow or disrespect toward the sacraments. I also don’t see a problem with asking for an alternative date, especially since this falls on a Saturday. There must be something more to the story to make it a headline.
 
Is there anything wrong with asking to have the Communion date moved a few days earlier? It it causes the parish no burden, I don’t see why not.🤷

Wow, that’s quite a nasty and unnecessary generalization. In terms of this story, my parents requested a time and date when I was the only one making my First Holy Communion. I guess they’d be branded as troublemakers now. :rolleyes:

Me neither, since the band is from the UK, one band member is from Ireland, so it’s just a day out their Communion ? Jesus vs One Direction, oh my, the land of Saints & Scholars !

I’m currently trying to get Christmas moved to Easter and Halloween abolished, 🤷
 
Hmm… let’s see… the Son of God… or some kids whose 15 minutes should have been up long ago…

I guess I could see the three parents’ point… IF there was something IMPORTANT going on. A boy band playing a concert definitely does not qualify as something important.

I think I would call this a teachable moment. Life is full of times when things we want to do conflict with things we should do. Kudos to the other parents for not giving in.
