Thrid time at Confession where the same Priest DID NOT say "I absolve you.."

Yeah, call it a Catholic’s instinct but it’s when the priest says “I absolve you” that I finally experience the spiritual release of my debts - to speak all layman like. I would know if those words were not said too.

I had this exact same thing happen to me a short time ago. I had seen threads on this on CAF for some time, and always pretty much dismissed them as worrying over nothing, until I experienced it first hand. It was the first time, and hopefully the last. I made an inquiry of a Dominican Friar who teaches a course I had taken through our diocese, and he checked into it for me with some fellow friars and a theologian in the diocese. His response to me was that the confession itself would probably be invalid, because the proper form was not followed. He added however, that I was not culpable if I had received communion unworthily because I went to the sacrament with proper intent and contrition, etc. I was informed that while I did not have to, I may wish to consider re-confessing some of the sins to ease my own conscience on the matter.

In short, I understand why this is upsetting to you, and if I were in your shoes, I would probably seek out a different confessor. In addition, I would definitely ask to speak with the pastor to explain the situation. You don’t have to be accusatory to express legitimate concern on the Sacrament of Penance anymore than you would if a priest was making up the words of consecration during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I would simply explain to the pastor what has happened and state that you are sure this is probably a simple mistake, etc. on the part of the priest and then let the pastor handle it from there.

And he breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit – if you forgive the sins of anyone they are forgiven if you retain them they are retained.

He who could yes on earth forgive sins – gave that power to certain men…

That should not worry you given that Father says his Prayer to Jesus at the beginning of Confessional time in which time, God is listening to every one of His Children’s Confessions and giving His absolution at the end of sins confessed. I go through my sins with Jesus before Reconciliation and pray asking Jesus and Our Lady Mary Mother of Jesus to remind me of mortal sins and other sins of great importance. I then ask Jesus for forgiveness just before and after The Holy Rosaries prayed and after a sin has just been committed praying for healing at the same time.

The point is that true remorse and the opening of your Heart confessing to Jesus and Mother Mary is the most important step when asking for forgiveness of sins; not just going through the motions of Jesus Sacraments.

Its taken me years to work at this and am still striving to be fully remorseful contrite and sorry to Jesus for every sin committed; sometimes it takes me twice on certain sins to ask for forgiveness if I had not healed at the time the sin was committed. This is for my Soul as Jesus’ and Mother Mary’s Child in which I know it is best that if I am genuinely remorseful, satan has a harder time of re-visiting that sin already confessed and forgiven by God.

Jesus and Mother Mary are listening each time; do not worry about receiving Father’s prayer of absolution. Jesus is making His Holy Signs of Absolution while you are kneeling or sitting there, which reminds me, that I should have been kneeling yesterday at Confession not sitting!

This is what I would do.

(1) First, I would go to confession with the pastor. I would be interested in seeing how he conducts the Sacrament first. For all we know, he could be doing the same thing as the other priest.

(2) Speak to/write the pastor regarding what I have experienced and request a return to proper form. Depending upon what happens in #1, I would include concerns over the way the other priest or the way the other priest and the pastor conducted the Sacrament.

(3) If the response to my comments/letter go by the waist-side (either by no response or observing no change in the confessional in subsequent confessions), I would then contact the Bishop.

(4) I would see this an obligation on my part. If this priest continues in this manner, think of all of the confessions that are invalid. Think of all the people who have gone to confession without absolution. Do not let this go.

The Bible teaches that no man has authority to forgive men’s sins on earth. The Apostles were told to preach the Gospel of Christ’s death and Resurrection. Belief in Jesus, true saving faith, is the only thing that you will be able to enter heaven by, and those who have true saving faith the Apostles were told they could “confirm” them forgiven, The Apostles had power and authority to confirm their sins remitted if they truly believe the Gospel and Have Received the Holy Ghost, by showing the signs of those who truly believe, as read in Mark Chapter 16.

Now, under the New Covenant, There is neither Men, Women, Jewish Person, Gentile, Italian, This no longer exists anymore in Christ!!!
We are all the same, and adopted into Christ’s Family, If we have been Born Again by Christ’s Spirit!!! Then we are forgiven!!! A clean slate!!! Paid for entirely by Jesus Christ. Thanks, I can only hope and pray I have been forgiven, as (and I don’t mean to sound flippant) but there have been a lot of sins I have confessed in those 3 meetings - though that may sound bad, its true…

Why don’t you just go to another priest?
