You have to watch the good stuff, if we don’t watch it they will just cancel it and just show the “carp”.

i truly enjoy tv. my son likes the pbs cartoons like barney an sesame street. also this is the only way he can watch the winnie the pooh tapes. also i like watching spanish soaps, also ewtv on the mornings and sports such as college football. god bless you all

I truly chuckle when people have a “throw the tv out” approach…and suggest to OTHERS to do the same… but have no problem with keeping the Internet… and heres WHY:

True… the Tv can assail one by surprise with less than moral content…even with commercials… but it STILL can only go so far, and one also has a certain knowledge of what shows are crass or not.

The argument is, that at least on the Net…one has to go LOOKING for the sin and basically one cant really get “surprised” as much as Tv can do…true…BUT…since we are ALL Sinners, nobody can EVER DENY that if the urge to sin comes upon them, the content that is on the Internet will UNEQUIVICALLY lead one MUCH DEEPER into every sort of depravement known to man…1,000 TIMES MORE THAN TV…and 10,000 TIMES MORE GRAPHIC

…PERSPECTIVE is needed here.

I just dont like it when people slam Tv but fail to speak the truth about what the Internet is MORE CAPABLE OF… its like Vegans telling me what I SHOULD and SHOULDNT eat, cause they found something that supposedly works for them.

That being said…AGAIN…

I find I have my set turned to EWTN and Fox News about 95% of the time… with the exceptions of some tv shows like Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens…*sigh…yes…even those selfish and hedonistic charactors from Will & Grace. :o

I have a sweet Home Theater Set-up with Dvd Player and surround sound…couldnt imagine giving it up…thats my relaxation from reality… a good escapist movie… I aint a Monk and dont pray 24/7…though God is always on my mind. 🙂

man, i HATE fish…
Very funny, but if I spell it out it becomes " **** " and I dont want people to think I said another four letter word.

I like TV. I think that TV itself is harmless, it’s certain programs and advertisements that are harmful, not the TV. 😉

Whoever voted that it was a harmless influence needs their heads examined :tsktsk:

I am not a fan of TV, but I do recognize its value when it comes to information and culture. It is a same with every medium. Do I trash my CD player because it can play voodoo rap? No, I have the controls and I play nothing but classical on it. If we look for trash, we will most certainly find it on the Internet. The only way we can keep free from the influence of popular culture is to leave society, go up on a mountain, dig a cave and remain in it.

I wonder whether we–those of us who are lay catholics in the world and called to sanctify the world and ordinary life–have a responsibility to stay up with what’s going on in the world…including both the high and low culture found on TV?

I agree with Jeff above, that knowing about and being somewhat immersed in American culture gives one the opportunity of influence…evangelization.

I think about this regarding my own four children as well…do I hide them from the garbage or selectively expose them so that they will be “normal” enough to have an influence on their peers? It’s a tough question…

I just handed over my TV to my brother yesterday. It has a DVD & a VCR built in.

If I want to watch a DVD or ETWN, I’ll just use my computer. Unless I know anyone who can copy VCR tapes to DVD, the tape will go into storage.

I seem a bit more cleansed now! 🙂

Research is finding that the high rate of ADD and ADHD in kids today can be linked to television viewing. Regardless of the content, developing brains that are subjected to the constant movement, cut aways, bright flashing of the TV, are being adversly affected.

I used to think that because my kids watched Nick Jr and other children’s programing that I thought was safe that it was ok,
but any television is not good.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is now recommending NO TV OF ANY KIND for babies under the age of 2.

I like TV, and wouldn’t consider getting rid of it. I like EWTN, PBS, and many of the cable channels. I haven’t watched network TV in at least 20 years, and have no desire to. My taste in TV shows is extremely G-rated.

I think the TV is just a tool. It can be good, bad, or neutral. It’s up to the parents to control the TV-watching in the home. I don’t think it’s a good idea for each kid to have a TV in his/her bedroom (just as I don’t believe they should have PCs there, either).

As to what people did before there was TV; I don’t know, maybe they did more family things together – but that sure doesn’t help me. Maybe they worked 15 hours a day, and fell into bed half-dead the minute they got home.

Since the free time I have tends to come at extremely peculiar hours of the day, TV-watching doesn’t take away from other activities for me.

Some good comments. T.V. has been a real blessing to those who enjoy religious programing such as E.W.T.N. Our diocese has a 24 hour T.V. station, also. Shut-ins are able to watch daily Mass. We can follow the Holy Father with programs such as yesterday’s special celebration of the Feast Day of St. Peter and St. Paul.

**OK guys…I’ll be one of the more honest people here and admit that I watch TV and enjoy it. It’s nice to crash at the end of a really busy day and turn my mind off for a while. **

**I like to sit and hand quilt while the TV is on…Makes me feel more productive, I guess. Or, it may jsut be a nice way to relax. **

I love to read good mysteries, and love watching things like Law & Order (all of them), and all the CSI’s…Good movies are fun, too. And, I like to watch quilting shows, and lots of the stuff of HGTV. I also watch some EWTN…But usually listen to their shows on the radio (usually online).

Lest you think I do nothing but watch TV, I read a lot, quilt, spend lots of time with my four grandboys, work part time, and am active in church. But, I do like our fifty-inch TV, and will not apologize for it. It’s just another part of my life.

What’s this anti-TV campaign on this board all of a sudden?

Too many people I’ve known rail against TV as an excuse to boost their own self-righteousness.

I dont think TV is really all that bad. Granted, it depends on what you watch, and to a certain degree how much TV you watch. But besides that, there is no reason to assume that everything on TV is bad. Even though I have a TV, just recently reaquired one, I have to admit, I was probably slightly better off. Not so much that it was a bad thing to have. Its just that it can be a needless distraction. But maybe thats what DVRs are for 😛

Most of what is on tv is garbage anyway. There are a few good programs though. I have a tv radio that I use to listen to some tv programs. It is great because I do not have to worry about seeing inappropriate material. I can also do other things while I listen.

I find it hard to sit still while watching tv. It is kind of boring. Listening to movies is hard though , if you are not familiar with the movie.

I stopped watching most TV due to my work schedule/travel a few years ago. Now when I watch it, which is only 2-3 hours a month, I can’t believe some of the things that I see. There are so many other things to do in the world. Whoever called it “dead brain time” was a genius.

Television is what you make of it. People can be influenced by anything now adays, if we keep getting rid of bad influences we’ll be back in the stone age. We just have to guard ourselves against things that will tempt us.

i can’t watch EWTN on the net, so–now throwing away of t.v for me.
