Throw away the television?

The good chanels are fine. What is getting worse and worse is network TV and cable. Brothers and Sisters, now there’s a fine bunch of dysfunctional people led by mom Sally Field, who, for those of you who don’t know, played the Flying Nun in the 1960s.

Californication debuted on Showtime today. The trend continues toward more porn, and more profanity, and does not show signs of slowing down. That’s the problem. Also, there are those who just didn’t notice how bad TV had gotten until others pointed it out. This is what people allow into their heads and some don’t realize how far they’ve allowed themselves to go.

Very true, but I still say the solution is not to turn off the tv altogether, but write producers and sponsors and let them know you do not appreciate this garbage passing itself off as ‘entertainment.’

We can’t retrreat from the media altogether and leave it as the enemy’s playground.

I agree. I watch TV fairly often, but I have hardly seen any network TV in well over 20 years. When I look at the TV listings, I don’t even bother checking what’s on the network channels. There is no inappropriate content showing up on my screen.

This is the sensible approach, rather than “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.” TV is technology, like the internet, and can be used for good or evil, but is, in and of itself, just technology.

The only thing that gets through (and I speak as someone whose family’s livelihood has been derived from local TV) is not watching what you find offensive. Ratings, and advertising $$$, speak loudly. Support those programs you find wholesome and speak loudly against the trash that offends all decent people.

Your point about the folly of abandoning the technology and leaving it to the “enemy” is excellent; television is a powerful tool, or we wouldn’t all be so riled up. We must speak up, and put our money where our mouth is.
 
I have voted “We keep ours for specific and limited purposes only.” We very rarely watch television, due to our opinion that the majority of programs are garbage. I didn’t have a tv in college and never missed it. I had one after college, but was so busy, rarely watched it. Now, we just use ours to play dvds. When we visit my parents, we’ll watch something of interest since they have Cable. (We don’t have Cable) We love the History Channel as we are history buffs and will sometimes put on “Sunrise Earth” which is just watching the sunrise over an area while we’re talking. When something really beautiful appears, we’ll bring it to the attention of everyone else. But at home, the tv is hardly ever on unless we are watching a rented movie.
 
Two words keep me from *ever *throwing away the TV. Home. Movies. 🙂 But it isn’t connected to any cable/satelite service and stays unplugged most of the time.

I’ve had way too many bad experiences watching TV. For instance, God’s name in vain numerous times on Animal Planet commercials, porn posters in a prisoner’s cell on National Geographic Channel on Sunday afternoon, the “B” word on Disney Channel in the evening, and these are the “good” channels! I don’t know why they expect me to keep paying to be offended :rolleyes:

Yes, this is the real problem…My grandmother always said, “My TV came with an off button… and I use it.”
I know people who have TV on 24/7.🤷 It would drive me crazy.

As far as the changeover to HDTV that is coming, ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/index.html is a link to a gov’t program that will supply $40 coupons to those of us with outdated equipment, as of February 2009. This will pay for a converter (or nearly pay).
I plan to get one. I also have cut way back on my TV use, & I have chosen to not purchase any new technology beyond my VCR for playing movies. I can’t justify the cost; I have all the movies I need, & when the machine dies, it dies. I will go back to reading more…
And now, I see that the DVD player is about to become obsolete…without my ever having had one! I may actually;) live…
 
While I don’t watch much tv anyway I won’t throw it away. I like watching my dvds of Star Trek, Brady Bunch and others and there are many shows past and present I enjoy watching currently. It is certainly not having a bad influence on me.
 
If someone would spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a TV to actually throw it away - then something is seriously wrong with that person, imo.

Apply for Opus Dei living 24/7 or maybe a monks monastary where ya can jar blueberry perserves all day and have someone tell you when its okay to talk - all for the sake of being “obedient”
 
In fact I can’t wait until they get rid of the modern medium called TV and go with something more along the lines of “user Control”. I just got a “Family Filter” put on my Internet connection, it works a treat, as soon I try loading something inappropriate on my web browser it just goes “No buddy, and I’m shutting this program down too!”… I wish they had this for TV too, which is why I hope they get on to the more user controlled version sooner rather than later.

Now I know that I can only use the Internet for good purposes it just wipes out any temptation and blocks anything that is blatantly immoral.

I don’t find watching anything on tv as sinful. But for those with scruples you can throw away yours. Just stay away from mine.

Anything? Wow, sounds like you have the ideal TV package! Mind sharing which company/package you have that nothing on there is sinful? If such a thing existed I might just have to join back up! 🙂

Well I don’t watch porn to begin with. What stuff on tv is sinful as long as it is not porn? I admit I am not entertained much by all these silly game shows and the sitcoms just ain’t what they used to be but it doesn’t mean immorality. I will continue to watch what I want to watch and let my conscience be the final arbiter of whether or not I am sinning.

Uhm, there is more to sin than porn. But what I’m saying is don’t throw out your television. Battles are not won by retreating.

You don’t think so? Well, Jim, some of us are… uh… I don’t know how to tell you this, but… Sure, why not? Californication debuted on Showtime on September 3rd. The reasons for throwing out the TV are becoming more numerous, not less.

And, yes, tossing the box is a good idea. It leads to a fuller life instead of being glued to one spot for hours at a time. Just take the number of hours you normally watch TV per day and multiply it by the number of days per year (minus any holidays or other events you usually attend). That’ll tell you how much of your life was, uh, placed on hold.

I see no need to throw away my television. you assume I all I do is watch the shows you are referring to. I watch Star Trek mostly. No harm there. Twenty years ago I used to watch the Cosby Show. N o harm there. And besides if I throw away my tv HOW do I watch EWTN?

I agree with you. Just because there are some garbage shows on the air doesn’t mean we have to watch those particular shows. There are plenty of channels to choose from (especially if you have cable/satellite TV) and plenty of good shows to watch.

I don’t need to throw out my TV – I control it; it doesn’t control me, and nobody is holding a gun to my head, forcing me to watch shows I consider offensive.

If people are worried about what their children are watching, then maybe it’s time to go back to the 1950s model – one TV set only – the family TV – placed in the living room, not in the kids’ bedrooms. 🙂
 
I keep saying you don’t win battles by giving ground, but whatevs.

If you abandon TV, consider that there are millions of kids watching it, and if there is nothing on there for them but garbage—well, you’ve heard the saying: GIGO.
