Tim Tebow's dad wants to convert Catholics in the Philippines?

Couple thoughts. I think the media fixate on Christians in one aspect - visible ones become only an example, even a spectacle. News stories on Catholicism almost never mention Jesus Christ (except to describe Christmas or Easter), but rather focus upon some controversial issue. The good we as church do is oft ignored, the sins of a few focused extravagantly upon, and no matter how far apart it happens in time or geography, if two stories break simultaneously about sexual abuse by clergy it becomes a breaking news story to follow the trend.

Tim Tebow is focused on for his faith (good for him, that more of us were as outspoken about Christ), but I’ve yet to see his behavior explicitly contrasted with that of the “dirty” players like Suh. No moral judgement is passed, no moral conclusion reached. Tebow’s faith is viewed in isolation ie, “here’s a guy who kneels and thanks God after a good play and talks up Christ afterwards.”

As to Tebow’s father and the evangelical tendency to treat Catholics as “churched” but unsaved, I don’t know if this is ignorance, arrogance, or malice. Probably the first two. A close friend of mine left the Church in college, was re-baptized and then went to her grandfather (a Catholic deacon, who baptized her as an infant) to ask for money for a mission trip to evangelize the Peruvians. She was astonished he wouldn’t support her, and very upset that he wrote her a letter decrying her re-baptism. For whatever reason she didn’t feel like she could find Christ in the Catholic Church, and even to this day she’s running from Catholicism. She and her husband recently left an evangelical church because they decided to allow infant baptism (provided the father performed it - the pastor would refuse). She received a very nice crucifix from her grandmother for her baby girl’s room, but decided not to put it up because it’s “too Catholic”. Etc.

I want to give some credit to the evangelicals. They’re not that dumb (not all of them). If they look at some of the subcultures in Latin America I can understand why they think we’re not converting people to Christ. It’s hard to look at saintly veneration, shrines along the road with statues of Mary, and say “No, really, they believe in Jesus Christ as their savior.” It’s a very foreign culture to that in which many of these evangelicals live.

Then Tebow’s dad says something blatant like “we estimate that over 65 million of them have never once heard the gospel of Jesus Christ” and I’m thinking he’s entirely ignorant of history and statistics. And as a statistician I really hate when people throw out a guess and call it an estimate. A goldbug once told me “I estimate that your stocks will lose 90% of their value when people give up on the dollar.” I think I threw something at him.

The best way to talk with Protestants is honestly over a beer. You need humor and some relaxation. I started a bachelor party for a buddy (an ordained Presbyterian minister, no less) with the joke “what do you call a Catholic hanging out with a dozen Protestants? Jesus and the Apostles.” We had a great time and some of them actually went to Mass after we talked.

Not that Tebow would do that. Digression. Sorry. fnord

Hmm, I dunno, that’s a lot like having a razor blade ductaped to one hand and a hammer duct taped to the other, and then being asked to comb your hair…
Personally I would comb my hair with the hammer.😃

Not sure who he is, but sounds like he and his Dad are doing good things and spreading the Gospel, how can that be bad.🙂

If Tim or his dad are “anti- Catholic” it’s probably because they haven’t been properly evangelized.I know from my past -faith is a journey. If Tim is searching for Truth, there’s a good chance he’ll make it here. I’m praying for Him.
But with all my heart I believe he is sincerely living his beliefs. That is not only commendable, but refreshing.

Really cool set of facts and stats: NFL doesn’t allow him to keep John 3:16 under his eyes. But then this quarter back who can’t throw- throws for 316 yards;averaging 31.6yards per pass, and the reported tv ratings for the end of that game 31.6.

Does make you say “HUM!”

Yeah, I’m pretty tired of hearing about him, too. But I would rather log on to the internet and see the words “Tim Tebow” instead of “Kardashian”!
I’m not certain who Tim Tebow is. And I couldn’t care less how many times the TT or KK names appear on my touchscreen. Because l tap another word and they are gone. I find “celebrity” stories of any kind totally uninteresting.

Come on, the Internet is a world medium. 95% of it’s content is going to be stuff that does NOT interest you. Is that really worth kvetching about???

Very tired. I suspect God is not much of a football fan. (Except Notre Dame, of course.)

Pffft. Another protestant “saving” those “poor, indigenous catholics”.

Stupid city.

I love Tebow Time, he has done more for Christians then most and his courage on issues like abortion are outstanding!

Where is the Catholic version of Tebow? That is the million dollar question.

Nope- It’s the first time I’ve heard it. It’s got a rather onomatopoeiac suond about it, like someone playing cymbal, floor tom, tom. LOL

I for one am not tired of Tim Tebow. We need more young men like him who worship God and are not ashamed to do so in public.
Totally agree. It’s funny how the TV personalities who have such a problem with Tim Tebow have far less to say about the poor sportsmanship, thuggery, drug abuse, and generally bad behavior by so many football players. It really says something about them.

:clapping: :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: :clapping:

I love how no one paid attention to the actual first post of the poster. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TITLE.

By the way, I wrote them a little letter saying they were proselytizing the Christian population already in place.

It’s so sad that the Philippines are losing their catholics to these types of self-righteous “christians”.

No. I’m tired of hearing what a ‘wonderful christian’ he is.
When his daddy is trying to convert Catholics.
I did not realize my father’s actions reflected on how good of a Christian I am.
And that is not what your title says anyway.

The best evangelization a Protestant can offer a Catholic is to go deeper in Christ. That said, approaching a group of catechized Catholics and saying ‘you’ve never heard of Jesus Christ’ isn’t the best way to start. Rather, approach with “I want to help you in your prayer life, I want you to experience Christ more fully whereever it is you experience Him know”.

My 3 boys watch nothing but sports, sports and more sports… so glad to see a vocal Christian role model for my boys! If we critisize Tim because of his father’s supposed views on Catholics aren’t we just stooping to the same level… Is this the Christian or Catholic way?

Just not far-fetched thinking to me. Long as I remember athletes been giving it up to God,

As far as his father? I doubt anyone in the locker room before or after the contest or practice is focused on anything but the task at hand. Course thats just IMHO.

This Tebow football player, which team does he play for?
Manchester United? Liverpool? Arsenal? Barcelona?

Second question, will he be allowed to pray in UEFA Euro 2012?

This post meant to be humorous. 🙂

I was about to face palm until that last line. But I have to admit it did give me a good chuckle.

We certainly know what his dad thinks of Catholics in the Philippines:

btea.org/theplan.asp
I would not worry about this…Tim Tebow plays football…things that are ingrained in the language of football will safeguard any Catholic and in fact will cause any non-Catholic to ponder…Mary is the strength that will cause football to cause that ponder…

As an aside having been to the Phillipines many times…other than Protestants the Mormons are quite active there too…

Getting back to football…the history of football is tied to Mary…next time you look at where a football player comes from …every time you see that they graduated from

Notre Dame…they gradutated from “Our Lady”…the Fighting Irish…can’t help but think of the catastrophe of the Irish Catholic…as it regards the Protestant imports…however close your eyes, imagine, that your team is behind 6 points, the clock is ticking, only a miracle will save the team…the ball is hiked, the quarterback steps back, there is chaos and WOW…there it goes…

A Martin Luther pass…no
A John Calvin pass…no
A Henry VIII pass…no
A Christian pass…no

Forever and a day just let Tim Tebow and his dad bite their teeth into the day when anyone and in particular Tim throws a “Hail Mary” pass…can you imagine how in the world they will expalin this…as the announcers aren’t going to say…now Tim…you were back on your own 2 yard line and you threw this Hail Mary Pass…and Tim says…now lets get this straight…it was a miracle but no Hail Mary…excuse me Tim…just a minute my dad is on the phone…my dad says you can’t call it a Hail Mary pass…so what are you saying Tim…it was not a Hail Mary pass…no, you see I am a Christian and my dad…and now a word from our sponsor…cut to Notre Dame…and the fighting Irish…👍

Lastly, just look at the history of all Protestant thought and in particular in America…Protestant thought goes the way of division…while Bob Tebow is doing whatever he is doing…realize that the Phillipines is a Matriarchal society…Bob may have short term success and the great thing is that if he raises a few generations of Protestants that will give many the notion of God, the notion of Christ and that will make it easier to teach them the truth…They may even be encouraged to watch TV…and football and wait for the Hail Mary pass…
