This is exactly why newspapers/magazines/etc. really ought to insist on their religion writers having more than a passing knowledge of, well, religion.

I love the attempted connection between the Church’s stance against homosexual acts and a change in a liturgy that the author clearly doesn’t understand. “Not only does the pope not want gays to be legally protected as human beings–he doesn’t even want people to shake hands!”
If it’s not disrespectful to call a friend of yours Scrooge, then it’s not here either.
It might behoove you to reread Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and reevaluate the appropriateness of comparing our Holy Father to the pre-conversion Scrooge.

“Those nicknames from the past — God’s Rottweiler, the Panzercardinal — don’t seem to stick anymore. After acquiring a reputation as an aggressive, doctrine-enforcing Cardinal, Pope Benedict XVI has surprised many with his gentle manner and his writings on Christian love. But with the Christmas season upon us, there is growing proof that the 82-year-old Pope is also quite willing to play the part of Scrooge to defend his often rigid view of Church doctrine. . . . .”
The author of this article goes on the assumption that somehow, Catholics would like a loose view of doctrine as a Christmas present.

The fact is, I can’t imagine anything better for Christmas from the pope than clear unbending teachings!
