True, and GPS wouldn’t even work if the relativity of time were not taken into account, so it’s interesting that people who use GPS every day can still believe time is absolute or imaginary.

Speed cop: In the last five minutes you’ve covered 10 miles, putting your average speed at 120 mph.
Driver: But time is imaginary.
Speed cop: Oh well, that’s OK then, have a nice day.

The Guardia Civil? After a whack on the head with a night stick! 😉

Yes, they’re not fond of highfalutin’ philosophizing. Try telling them time is imaginary and they’ll likely whack you with their imaginary night stick at an imaginary sixty beats per minute until you stop wasting their imaginary time. 😃

(Though to be fair, we live way out in the middle of nowhere and the guys around here have always been really helpful).

At least inocente gets nice weather which makes it easier for philosophizing… and stuff…

I needed that! Very funny!

And that’s how I found the Grays to be. Very helpful and very respectful.

Yep. For all the time I lived in Madrid, the weather was great. The smog, not so great.

Inocente:

Actually, to respectfully utter a correction, I have never said that time was imaginary. But, I do contend that it is, like mathematics, largely a realistic abstraction.

as long as we’re thinking of time…

a meter is one meter in length. a square meter is one meter in length and one meter in width. a cubic meter is one meter in length, one meter in width, and one meter in height. since time is the fourth dimension, a tesserectic(4-D) meter must be one meter in length, one meter in width, one meter in height, and one meter in duration. This means that seconds are just another name for four-dimensional meters. So…

how many seconds are in a meter?

Boy you’re going back, I had to look them up. They were part of Franco’s regime and disbanded when the new democratic constitution (¡viva!) was made law in … 1978!

I live far south of Madrid, but think smog there may be a thing of the past too. On the WHO database it’s cleaner than Rome, Berlin and Paris.

Yes, I was responding to something another poster wrote.

Yes, I guess any measurement is an abstraction, although we seem to come over all mystical about time in ways we don’t when talking about weight, length, etc.

The only constant here is the speed of light c, so for light there are 1/c seconds in a meter (and that relationship means any change to space must affect time, which is why both are relative).

But it’s not really that simple of course :), although E = mc[sup]2[/sup] means that at some deep level space, time, energy and mass must all be the same stuff. At which point we could come over all mystical about the oneness of it all and I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together, I am the walrus, goo goo g’joob.

Which is what I’ve been saying, time is imaginary because unlike matter it does not have a time particle to become One with anything, - it is imaginary.

Who told you reality only comes in particles?

Time is sometimes conceived as being a complex plane, with axes which are traditionally but misleadingly called real and imaginary, so you may have misunderstood that. Otherwise I’ve no idea what you’re saying and it doesn’t seem to have been thought through - since particles of matter exist within time, if time was imaginary wouldn’t that mean the particles of matter necessarily have to be imaginary as well? :whacky:

not at all. when you say you are measuring time you are actually measuring motion of a particle. When “time” apparently “slows” down all that is actually happening is that motion is slowing, as time is just an abstract idea for sampling events or motion.

Inocente:

Is it possible that it might be a unit, more or less, of Planck time? From wikipedia:

One Planck time is the time it would take a photon traveling at the speed of light to cross a distance equal to one Planck length. Theoretically, this is the smallest time measurement that will ever be possible, roughly 10[SUP]-43[/SUP] seconds

Pig:

Actually, no. Time remains universally the same. The slow-down of time takes place apparently when the observer views it from a POV of compression, or expansion, of distances of mobile objects. So, if you are traveling toward an object that is in turn traveling toward you, time speeds up. Likewise, the opposite is true. Now, that said, even the measuring instruments will actually show a loss or gain of time in these situations. Yet, the instruments were perfectly synchronous at the start. (It has been a while. So, if anyone finds that a correction, or corrections, need to be made, please don’t hesitate to do so.)

IOW, motion can be faster or slower. A slower motion is one that covers a given space in a longer time, while a faster motion is one that covers the same space in a shorter time. If time were motion, such expressions of speech would have to be altered.

Imaginary means “something that is created by and exists only in the mind; that is not real”.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

So if you’re right and time is imaginary, the Fallen never really died in battle because the past is imaginary, just as growing old is imaginary and the sun going down each day is imaginary.

– sigh –

Natural units are cool but zro x was asking how many seconds in a meter, and the Planck units are tiny little critters in comparison.

You guys should read Julian Barbour’s (a respected physicist) book “The End of Time”. He doesn’t think the time is merely imaginary, he makes the case it doesn’t exist.

Don’t have time to explain right now.

Hi JD will get back to you one of these days.

The sun setting is motion not time. Motion changes, increase the speed of an object or particle and its internal motion simultaneously slows down to compensate. Like an atomic clock traveling at speed will have the motion of its particle slowed. But the clock or object will not age more rapidly or less rapidly in the sense of time as we commonly understand it, as in, the object does not travel through time like a time-traveler.
It is just a quirk of material and this universe which has a balance to maintain between speed and motion and matter.
