Very good guidance here.
Dshix, can you pls elaborate what you mean by authority and influence. By virtue of me being 15 yrs older than my cousin, does this give me a sense of authority? As to influence, the fact that I’m not close nor on friendly terms to him, would that render influence moot?
Ok.
So you have influence when a person respects your opinion and is likely to take it into account.
Authority is when you are in an actual position of authority above that person, giving you the right to speak to them in a commanding way.
Examples of both:
A person who has been close friends with another person for 20 years, starting in grade school and continuing through highschool, probably has great influence with that person, but not authority. Since the two persons have known each other so long and had such a strong friendship, if one says something to the other in a correcting manner, they are likely to listen.
A boss who has employees has positional authority over his employees. This authority, if used properly, is very strong and gives him the right to speak to his employees and correct them on certain matters. He doesn’t necessarily have influence with his employees, but notice that he can still, say, correct an employee if he is acting inappropriately.
A father has both influence and authority (hopefully) over his children. He has the positional authority over being father, and the influence of having cared for his children all their lives.

So, to answer your question directly: No, you do not have authority over your cousin just because you are 15 years older than him. You also don’t appear to have any strong influence with him, in that you haven’t spent very much time with him, and aren’t close friends. So I would not advise you to attempt to correct him in his behaviors or advise him on a better course of action, since he is not likely to listen.
