Times in films where you want to yell at the characters

Last night I watched Gone With the Wind (well the first part up until Scarlet and Rhett marry)

It had been a little bit since I was able to watch so much of it at one setting.

I watched how Rhett fearlessly helped Scarlet, Melanie and little baby Beau, and Prissy escape Atlanta.

Then Rhett in a very beautifully shot scene declares his love for Scarlet. (The imagery and cinematography was beautiful)

Here is the dialogue:

Oh, Rhett! Please, don’t go! You can’t leave me! Please! I’ll never forgive you!

Rhett Butler: I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’ll never understand or forgive myself. And if a bullet gets me, so help me, I’ll laugh at myself for being an idiot. There’s one thing I do know… and that is that I love you, Scarlett. In spite of you and me and the whole silly world going to pieces around us, I love you. Because we’re alike. Bad lots, both of us. Selfish and shrewd. But able to look things in the eyes as we call them by their right names.

Scarlett: [struggles] Don’t hold me like that!

Rhett Butler: [holds her tighter] Scarlett! Look at me! I’ve loved you more than I’ve ever loved any woman and I’ve waited for you longer than I’ve ever waited for any woman.
[kisses her forhead]
Scarlett: [turns her face away] Let me alone!
Rhett Butler: [forces her to look him in the eyes] Here’s a soldier of the South who loves you, Scarlett. Wants to feel your arms around him, wants to carry the memory of your kisses into battle with him. Never mind about loving me, you’re a woman sending a soldier to his death with a beautiful memory. Scarlett! Kiss me! Kiss me… once…

Anyways, I don’t really get those moments too often, I guess I figure the story is written that way for some reason yet to be revealed…

But I have to say, watching the new Fantastic Four in theaters… I am surprised my brother was the only person who walked out… Without spoiling it, it has the most annoying character I have ever seen in any movie… Which to add really quick, I would not recommend seeing the movie until it is at least on Red Box… I wish I would have seen Ant Man a second time instead of that

Yeah, I don’t really get those moments that often, maybe when it is a big battle scene, or an escape scene, where they should focus on what they are doing, but instead the characters sit there kissing, hugging, or just have some very long scene where they pronounce their love for eachother -.-

You should see my dad watching movies though, he really does yell at the characters, even in theaters…

I have a lot of talk back moments in GWTW. Like when Rhett returns from the trip with the daughter and Scarlett is happy to see him back and to tell him she is pregnant. He is rude and mean and then tells her maybe she will have an accident. Both were stubborn and if each had only softened up and forgave each other.

I get those moments more in TV, primarily when someone is spouting off some piece of ideological propaganda (or sometimes just unnecessary ignorance) and nobody mentions the logical fallacies or answers to it. For example, you really don’t want to be in the room with me when someone starts on the standard Galileo rant. :whacky:

It’s a good thing I usually watch TV alone.

P.S. I don’t mean on the news or anything, but on some show like Law and Order or something, where a character is taking certain ideological points for granted.

Sports fans do the yelling-at-TV thing regularly. For Maple Leafs fans, there is also wailing and gnashing of teeth.

It’s also a trope that old curmudgeons do this regularly at everything on TV. Including test patterns.

In a horror movie, or action movie when the good guy/potential victim gets the upper hand and doesn’t take advantage of it, or do what needs to get done to make sure they’re safe, or to ensure the maniac/madman doesn’t go on to slaughter folks- supposedly the whole reason for confronting them in the first place…

… of course resulting in the maniac/bad guy/monster getting back up as soon as their back is turned, or getting away only to continue the slaughter…

I guess one of the reasons I loved the ending to the Magnum P.I. episode, “Did you see the sunrise?”

Reminds me of the Gene Autry episode where he demonstrates his marksmanship by shooting tin cans off a fence rail … while riding his galloping horse upside down! Later, during the chase, he can’t hit the bad guy trying to escape, sitting up-right in the saddle of course. He thus surrendered his advantage to give the bad guy an even break by duking it out.

I’ve seen a lot of films where I want to yell at the characters in the movie (most especially in horror and/or suspense), but the one movie which I can’t make myself watch over again is “Titanic”. I just absolutely hate the ending.

I mean how hard was it to share that plank of wood, so that Leonardo Di Caprio wouldn’t have to die. And saying " I’ll never let you go", while she pries his hands off the wood, is just more than I can take. Argghhh!!!

But the stubbornness of the characters was what the movie was all about. As I recall in literature class, conflict is necessary for a story. No conflict, no story. It applies even to simple methods like cartoons.

Of course, a story needs conflict, but Scarlett took stubbornness to a new level (if I could I would have slapped some sense into her).

Yes, I did, but I have to pay 6$ to get this channel, although it’s worth it in the end.

I don’t think I ever wanted to Yell at a movie scene,but there had been times I wanted to walk out because the storyline was just so STUPID !

My Ex Father in law had no problem with yelling & screaming at the television watching Football , I’d watch him and just waiting for him to Blow a Blood vessel ,
