BTW do you know the interaction between Sponsors and Godparents? As some have Godparents before the enter, while other do not.
Hmmmm…I was baptised October 1944 in England, and I have no idea if my Godparents are still alive. As for a “Sponser”, nothing has been done about that to date.

The reason? Well, this forum sometimes has a banner at the top on How To Become a Catholic. I read that, and was stupid enough to believe what it said about those who are already baptized with an extensive background in Christian theology.

Instead, I have been dumped into the catechuman class heading for the easter Vigil and perhaps a public conditional baptism, not the private one recommended by the US Council of Bishops in that document.

So exactly what is a sponser supposed to do for me? Besides being window-dressing?

Ok I have to ask. Those that are not Baptized are dismissed for BOW on Sunday Mornings. When does the Catechetical or teachings session with all the RCIA Catechumens (not Baptized) and Candidates (Baptized) take place?
The church where I did RCIA did RCIA on Thursday nights and BOW was required for Candidates and Catchumens. All of us were Candidates with small children and most of us didn’t have a spouse to watch our kids during Mass. My oldest two would go to Children’s Church for a while and then come back and sit by themselves. They were 7 and 9 and completely unfamiliar with the Catholic church. My youngest was 2 and I would leave her in the Mass with people she didn’t real know. I ended up dropping out because I had to hire a babysitter on Thursday night and then leave them on Sunday (my dh is not home on Thursday evenings, not Catholic and not interested in going to Mass).

Guess I just didn’t want it bad enough to go insane to get it. 🙂

Private instruction and home study is still an option, and probably indicated, for someone in your situation. Talk to the priest and ask about this - if he can’t accomodate you, ask him for a recommendation.

I realize that you only know what’s written in a book, but you might try it in the real world for a change.

Do you really think that a Protestant would make a good Catholic in a “matter of weeks”? Not in my RCIA class or anywhere else.
It worked out just fine for my grandpa. 🙂 I don’t remember who said it but it’s not always true that non-Christians are more versed in Catholicism than Protestants. I read all of the Suprised by Truth books, Crossing the Tiber, Rome Sweet Home, Could You Ever Be Catholic, this forum, the Coming Home Network, watched EWTN for years before coming to an RCIA class. I’ve remained Lutheran for now but often correct people when they throw out their misconceptions about Catholicism. Heck, a lot of Catholics don’t know much about Catholicism so I’m not sure why a Non-Christian would automatically be more knowledgeable.

Sponsor do many things, their primary responsibility is to help you. Also you are not a catechumen regardless of how many classes you attend, which classes you attend or when you attend these classes. I would discuss this with the priest before signing the book - which is for catechumens joining the Church. Many RCIA programs lack enough volunteers to hold multiple classes thus they group every body together. Please realize RCIA is a journey which never ends so whether you are walking by a catechumen or not has no real meaning.

In that case, I DO have a sponser, Father J.D. Zatalava of catechismclass.com. Here is how he has been greeting us this week:…

Hello, I’m Father J.D. Zatalava, founder of catechismclass.com. For the next several months I will be your tour guide on this fantastic digital journey through cyberspace. In this, the DISCIPLE PROGRAM, we will be exploring the faith of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, the one and only Church founded by Jesus Christ, himself. Jesus founded his one church upon the Rock of Peter. In the Bible Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6] thus assuring all of mankind that no one (that’s NO ONE) gets to Heaven except by listening and doing what He (JESUS) tells them to do. Practically speaking pretty much the first thing he tells us to do is found in Matthew 16:17 Jesus said, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. 18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon THIS rock I will build MY church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give YOU the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Some will say “that was then, this is now.” Jesus addresses the “now” in chapter 28 of the same Gospel when He says: 18 Then Jesus approached and said to them (the first Catholic Bishops), "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of ALL nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe ALL that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age

The sponsor also has to be present at your classes to witness to the priest and the parish community that you have been doing your studies.

He has to show up to your Rites, as well, and affirm with an oath that you are ready for the next step.

He has to do that in person; he can’t be someone from the Internet. 😉

I should have guessed that there was going to be a catch somewhere:D

It is to be hoped for that, by next Sunday, the RCIA Facilitator will have rounded up some Sponsers for those of us without:)
