I am sorry to observe that I think some are only here to say nasty things about the church, and to attack it

I don’t understand what pleasure it brings them to act like this?..If you don’t want to be a catholic don’t be one. however, it is certainly small minded to snipe at things …No one is perfect and we are all sinners

If I didn’t want to join in a discussion to learn something, and to grow, I wouldn’t do it just to try to wound others and to insult them

It says more about the kind of person they are than the institution they are attacking

Nobody is denying the fact that sex abuse are committed by non-catholic clergy as well.

The real issue is the fact that the higher ups were caught red-handed covering-up and recycling the offenders. That suggests that there are other hidden secrets around the world that has yet to be uncovered. Particularly in conservative catholic countries were victims tend to keep quiet. Also suggests that this had been happening for 2000 years.
 
Well I choose to done none of the things listed, so I guess I will just scroll past troublemakers

No it doesn’t, I have posted before that this has been a societal issue, not an Catholic Church issue. This has happend in society in ALL areas. This is how these crimes have been handled for years. Do you realize that there were laws protecting animals before there were laws protecting children in the USA? These cover ups are actually still happening in some protestant churches, I know because I have worked on some of the cases. The Catholic Church has benefited because it is out in the open and changes are being made. Were do you get your information in regards to “coservative catholic countries,” can you back that up?

400,000??? I didn’t even know there were that many ministers in the U.S… or are you talking about the world??

No, the shame has been placed on those who (also) committed this crime… The point is that Protestant ministers are… not just as bad… but apparently worse… but nobody talks about that in the media because the media hates the Catholic Church… as does many Americans…
 
Why was there a cover-up? Why were offenders moved from place to place? THere are as many reasons for this as there are guilty parties.

The most common one has to do with the understanding of confession and councilling in that era. The idea held by many was that if the guilty person confessed the sin and was open to the grace of confession, and underwent councilling, they would no longer have the desire to molest. To further help the person, they would be moved from that location to remove the temptation. Now, we know that this type of attraction does not go away. Period. No amount of councilling will get rid of it. All that happened was the priest was moved to a new place to start.

The most extreme case was the dude in Boston. WHy he wasn’t defrocked when he started writing for NAMBLA i will never know.

My main issue is that after multiple offenses, these guys still weren’t out.

I am also confused as to why they were permitted to remain as Bishops. If they knew crimes against kids were being commited…and did nothing but move priests around, a plea of ignorance only goes so long. We must learn to forgive in our hearts, but justice also needs to be served. If a crimewas committed at my place of business, and I did nothing, but knew about it…and just did nothing…worse, covered it up for the other party…I would be fired. I don’t think that we should have Bishops in place who didn’t act in the best interest of children.

All that being said…I believe we will get further if we light one candle, than curse the darkness. I see change already. Pope Benedict is doing everything he can to put reform in place so this doesn’t ever happen again. It takes time to unravel the damage done by a few, but we’re getting there, I believe.

It’s not a reason to abandon the faith…to abandon the Eucharist. Just my thoughts.
