I don’t see it as being a command. God did not command it. Abram took it upon himself. It may be a wonderful idea, and many churches suggest offering what you are able, but it is hardly a command from God like the Ten Commandments are.

Your response explains further why overall regardless of what Christian church, every church interprets scriptures differently. Abram was giving to God what was required. How much clearer does it have to be?

I used the King James ---- of course I am going to be told that does not make this a commandment ---- folks go away ---- I could cite other Old Testament scriptures and you would say the same thing.

Accept the fact that you do not want to pay tithing, in spite the fact it is a commandment of God and your man-made forms of supporting the church supersede a clear commandment of God.
You’re not making any sense now. You can’t stand on your own word. In the KJV according to the one online, there’s no commandment. God wasn’t shy about commanding things in the OT.

You said you can cite more, please do.

And making the assumption that I “don’t want” to pay tithing is an assumption that you really shouldn’t make. However, the Catholic Church does not command tithing. It appears the LDS church does.

What I am finding beyond pale is that a church authority is abusing an elder. In fact, God spefically commanded that widows be cared for completely. It sounds like this woman is not.

Hello
I was LDS for a short time and I can credit them with sparking my interest in the actual law of tithing. In the Joseph Smith translation of the bible Gen 14: 37-39
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/jst/jst-gen/14.html?lang=eng

37 And he lifted up his voice, and he blessed Abram, being the high priest, and the keeper of the storehouse of God;
38 Him whom God had appointed to receive tithes for the poor.
39 Wherefore, Abram paid unto him tithes of all that he had, of all the riches which he possessed, which God had given him more than that which he had need.

Tithing was never meant to be used for construction an maintenance of buildings. Moses built the Ark with contributions, David/Solomon financed the temple with Government money, and when the temple needed repairs they placed a lock box in the temple for contributions. The problem isn’t with tithing but rather church leaders who claim to be special representatives of God’s will which is highly discouraged in the Book of Mormon as priestcraft.

A lot? I see it being noted that Abram gave 10%, but nothing to suggest that it was commanded of him.

What did I do wrong on the above post? The last paragraph all ran as one line.

You do not know whether any of us tithe or not, and we have no obligation to tell you. But it is presumptuous of you to think that you know what anyone does or doesn’t do. That’s a bit judgemental, don’t you think?

I don’t have an income, but I usually give what I can. So, by definition I’m giving way more than 10%.

So again you are saying my church does not care for the poor. On the contrary, it does a lot

It is not “my word”, if you will ---- your issue is the commandments of God. God was clear ---- you make sense???

Bottom line for me ---- this is another of the continuous drumbeats where you have a issue with the commandments of God and the restored church. That is fine.

I am on the forums to give my conviction of the truth whether Catholics believe it or not.

I don’t think anyone was saying that the LDS doesn’t care about the poor.

And, again, it is not “clear that God commanded it” from a verse that doesn’t mention God commanding it.

“I am on the forums to give my conviction of the truth whether Catholics believe it or not.”

And we Catholics are here to give our conviction of the truth whether LDSs or anyone else believes it or not. You can keep saying that you are “right” all you want. You are free to believe your interpretation of the bible, but you do not need to talk down to everyone else. That is very uncharitable.

You are trying to claim it is compassionate to tell a 91 year old in dire straits that she must give 10% or she will be punished by the church?

I did my own research on LDS tithing. It is a command of the church. It does not appear to be biblical, although the Bible is cited. So, on one hand you are being “truthful”. LDS are commanded to tithe. It, however, is not backed up by scripture in the way you proport.

That said, this is a thread about how to help a Mormon within their laws. I cede the fact that this is a Mormon law and will give advice based on that. Even though this is a Catholic board, I will not apply Catholic Law.

Generally, I love the LDS church and it’s people. I am very good friends with several LDS and have tremendous respect for them. Why? Because typically they grasp mercy and social justice issues far better than the rest of society, even Catholics.

What this bishop did is NOT defensible in even LDS teachings. He could not change the law for this woman, but he had no right to threaten her. Moreover, according to the LDS faith he is obligated to find ways to provide for her so she can make her tithe and not fall into sin. He did not do that. By threatening her he did the opposite.

I can admit that there are bad leaders in the Catholic church, and in this case it is clear that the LDS church has a bad leader. A good Bishop would not do this. How do I know? Because among my LDS friends are many who had relitvly low income during their college years. The Church always made sure that they were housed, fed and had every need met so they could make their tithe–even if it ment that the church technically gave them many times the value of that tithe.

What happen to this woman is wrong in any religion, full stop.

You know, this has been fun but I got to get up to go to Mass in the morning. I probably won’t fall asleep right away, but I’ll end up spending too much time here if I don’t get off of caf. And everyone, regardless of their religion is welcome to come if they want to. I hope everything gets solved, with that lady and see what happens.

Leviticus 27:30-34 clearly states what is the Lord’s (tithing).

If you say unless, you give me further reason why I had to leave the Catholic church. Or its your personal agenda to interpret the scriptures ways that please you versus what they actually say.

So far I haven’t really made any interpretation, merely challenged your claim that what Abram gave to Melchizedek was commanded of the Lord. There’s no indication that this was the case, and that’s all I argued.

Now that you bring up Leviticus, yet again, I ask you: does your church require you to build parapets around your roof?

I dont know why you consider yourself christian, when lds members are pseudochristians, since you reject the divinity of christ.yes, lds do help the poor, but only their members.if one is non lds member and you ask them for assistance they wont help you, unless you convert.its all about the money, baby!

So the people who received help as a result of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma had to join my church before they received any assistance from us ----- love those lies, which are not correct. Further, anyone can receive assistance regardless if they are LDS or not so get your facts correct before spreading such lies. Assisting the poor involves support from others ---- it is not a money maker.

I don’t know if Thom is correct about Texas…although I do know that LDS’ charity outside themselves is often in hopes of conversions. That said, we are in a situation on this thread where a Bishop has been entirely cruel to an old lady and given her none of that mercy and support of the poor you speak of. We don’t need to go further than this thread to find the hypocrisy of at least this LDS bishop.
